In northern Colorado, someone requires a blood transfusion every 37 minutes, according to Bridget Aesoph, donor recruiter for Garth Englund Blood Donation Center.

Blood facts

Blood is composed of several important components. Plasma is the base, made of mostly water. Red blood cells pick up oxygen from the lungs and transport it via the circulatory system to every cell in the body, providing energy. Platelets help the blood clot to reduce bleeding after injury, the first step toward healing damaged tissues. Each of these blood parts can be safely transfused to patients that need them when in the hospital.

All blood donated through UCHealth Garth Englund Blood Donation Centers stays local. It helps patients at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Greeley Hospital and Estes Park Medical Center.

Blood products are not only needed for trauma patients up to 100 pints of blood products per patient but women with complications during pregnancy sometimes need a blood transfusion. Children with severe anemia and many who have complex medical or surgical procedures need blood transfusions. Cancer patients also need these products.

What Can Disqualify You From Donating Plasma

If youre interested in donating plasma, requirements exist for a rigorous screening as part of the plasma donation process. Part of the reason that the screening process exists is to protect those receiving the donations, many of whom have compromised health. It also ensures that the donors themselves are in good enough physical health to avoid the side effects of donating plasma.

The requirements for donating plasma are fairly consistent. You must be at least 16 years old, weigh over 110 pounds, and have a valid ID. Do they drug test you before donating plasma? Not generally people who take certain prescription drugs, show signs of injectable drug use, or are visibly intoxicated are not allowed to donate plasma.

Part of the reason that the screening process exists is to protect those receiving the donations, many of whom have compromised health.

Certain health conditions also prevent you from donating, such as pregnancy or recent childbirth. If youve had dental work in the past 72 hours, youll be deferred. Also, if youve received the MMR vaccine or had chickenpox in the past month or taken antibiotics orally in the past 2448 hours or by injection in the past 72 hours, youre also deferred.

How Long Between Plasma Donations

What Are The Disadvantages Of Getting A Tattoo

Because tattoos pierce the skin, they can lead to skin infections and other common issues, such as Allergic responses. Tattoo pigments, particularly those in the colors green, red, yellow, and blue, can show allergic skin reactions like an itching rash at the tattoo site. This can even face years after the tattoo is applied.

Are You Allowed To Give Blood If You Have A Tattoo

The good news is that having a tattoo doesnt usually prevent you from donating blood. In many cases, you can be tattooed from neck to knee and still provide a pint of blood to your local blood bank.

There are, however, some exceptions, and theyre worth considering so you arent caught off guard if and when you are turned away at the blood drive.

Are There Other Things That Make You Ineligible For Blood Donation

Before you go to donate blood, you need to make sure that you are aware of any factors that may make you ineligible for donating blood. There are a couple of conditions that may mean you cannot donate any blood.

Tattoos are usually one reason why people may get turned away from giving blood, but you may also get turned away if you have a tattoo that you got within one year of trying to give blood.

This is because foreign materials can get into your blood and contaminate it when you get a piercing. In some cases, this may even mean that you get blood infections, for instance, HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

In some cases, it may actually be possible to donate blood if you have recently had a piercing though. Namely, if you went to a professional establishment that operates using single-use nail guns.

If this is the case then you should have no problem giving blood. If the gun is reusable then you will need to wait for 12 months before you try to donate blood or plasma again.

There are also other conditions that make it so you cant donate blood. Some examples include sickle cell disease hemophilia, jaundice, ebola, babesiosis, Chagas disease, and a number of others.

These conditions arent necessarily ones that you will get from having a tattoo, though it is slightly more likely that you will get these diseases and viruses after you have gotten a tattoo.

What To Eat Before Donating Plasma

Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Tattoo | Dos and Don’ts

Drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced, healthy diet is always a good choice, but its even more important on the days leading up to plasma donation. Make sure to get a good nights sleep before the day of your donation. Drink about 6 to 8 cups of water the day before and day of donating, and eat a protein- and iron-rich meal within 3 hours of donation.

High-protein foods include beans and legumes, beef, chicken, shrimp, cheese, eggs, milk, yogurt , and seeds and nuts. Broccoli, beef, beans, iron-enriched breakfast cereals, chicken, ham, dark leafy greens, raisins, and watermelon are all high in iron.

Avoid fatty foods like French fries and other fried foods, pizza, or sweets the day you donate, and dont drink alcohol the night before. These can affect your blood tests and prevent you from donating.

Follow The Aftercare Instructions

Always listen to your artists advice when it comes to looking after your tattoo while it heals. Being careful, not irritating the area, and using a good tattoo lotion will allow your ink to heal as quickly as possible while limiting the risk of infection.

The best tattoo lotion Ive ever personally used is a vegan aftercare product called After Inked Tattoo Aftercare Lotion. This stuff works amazingly well during the healing process not only by keeping your tattoo really well hydrated but also by soothing any annoying itching and irritation. When using it from the very start of the healing process, this lotion will help to decrease tattoo healing times and work towards eliminating any lingering dryness and scabbing.

Following these basic steps wont let you bypass the twelve-month waiting period before you donate, but theyll significantly reduce your odds of contracting blood-borne pathogens. Not only would an infection or disease be unpleasant in itself, but having hepatitis or another condition means the blood bank wont be able to use your blood, even if they do allow you to donate it.

On that note, please avoid getting a tattoo in a foreign country where standards may be lower and there may be a higher risk of infectious disease.

Is There Anything I Can Do To Make The Process Faster

Donation times do vary throughout the day based on donor patterns. We have a few suggestions to minimize your donation time:

  • Always use OctaPass this will save you time at the center by completing a questionnaire ahead of time and can be accessed online here or with our mobile application, OctaApp.
  • Hydration donors who are fully hydrated will reduce the donation time by several minutes.
  • Avoid peak periods check with your center on the lowest volume times of the day and try to work those times into your schedule. Sometimes that isnt feasible, but it is always good to know the off-peak periods of the day.

13 types of tattoos I DONT LIKE!

Everything the tattoo artist will use to do your tattoo should be in plain view. Nothing disposable should be reused. The needles should be in their packaging until everything starts, and the ink should be straight out of the bottle too. Dont allow a tattoo artist to cut corners. It might be awkward to demand that they use new items or even to grab your jacket and leave, but you should never put yourself and your health at risk.

Can I Donate Plasma If I Have Had Covid

Covid-19 has had devastating effects around the globe. Many people had the virus, and if you are one of them, you may be wondering if your plasma is safe to donate.

The answer is a resounding yes. So long as you have fully recovered and been symptom-free for at least 28 days, your plasma donation will be welcome. In fact, your plasma will be classified as convalescent plasma.

There are two types of plasma collected. Most is standard plasma which is general use plasma. If you have recovered from Covid-19 or had the vaccination in the past six months, your plasma should contain high levels of antibodies. Fortunately, the need for convalescent plasma with Covid-19 antibodies has dropped significantly in the past few months.

Do Not Lie Regarding Donating Blood After Tattoo

Lying about when you got your tattoo is unethical, especially if you got it a week or two before going to the blood facility. Fresh tattoos have a distinct sheen and appearance, indicating that youve only recently gotten your tattoo.

Staff at blood donation centers are well-trained in evaluating blood donors before proceeding. As a result, you should avoid deceiving them and save yourself some embarrassment. If they discover you lied, you could be barred from donating blood again. This is the last thing you want to happen, especially if someone dear to you needs Blood.

Some Blood Banks Are More Risk

In some cases, the blood bank youre dealing with might still turn you down, even if youre in a state that carefully regulates tattoo facilities. This is because they are either very risk-averse or not as knowledgeable about the safety procedures that tattoo artists use while doing their work.

Regardless of the reason, be sure to mention youve recently been tattooed when you show up to donate or call ahead to make sure its okay.

When You Donate Plasma What Do They Test For

Plasma donation centers use a combination of methods to determine a plasma donor’s eligibility. If you’ve ever donated blood or another blood product at the American Red Cross, a blood drive, blood bank, or another blood center, many of the eligibility requirements will feel familiar.

That’s because donating blood has many of the same blood donor eligibility guidelines as donating plasma. These guidelines are determined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and while there are exceptions, if you’re ineligible to donate blood, you are likely ineligible to donate plasma, and vice versa.

Before your first donation, new plasma donors will answer a series of medical history questions and complete a health screening to ensure they’re a good candidate.

Here’s what to expect from the donation process:

Health Questionnaire

After you check in at your plasma donation center, you’ll complete a questionnaire that will ask questions about your medical history, medications you’re currently taking, recent surgeries or medical procedures, relevant travel history, recent tattoos and piercings, and assesses your risk for certain transmissible diseases. You’ll complete this questionnaire each time you donate.
