Where Can I Get A Contraceptive Implant Fitted Or Removed

You can get the contraceptive implant for free, even if youre under 16, from:

  • contraception clinics
  • sexual health or genitourinary medicine clinics
  • some young peoples services

Some GPs or practice nurses are able to fit and remove implants, so youll need to check at your GP surgery.

Alternatively, most sexual health clinics will be able to do this for you.

Information For After Your Nexplanon Placement

Incision Site Care

Keep the wrapped compression dressing on for 12 to 24 hours. Underneath is a Band-Aid and/or tape strips across the insertion site, which should be maintained for three days. The insertion site is only 4 mm long. Contact the office you develop a fever above 100.4, or there is expanding redness or pus from the incision site.

Pain

It is normal to have some discomfort and bruising following placement. Ibuprofen can be used as needed for next few days. Contact the office if pain becomes too severe. After the first week, you should be able to feel the Nexplanon implant without any discomfort. If you cannot feel the implant at all, please call the office.

Bleeding

It is very common to have bleeding after Nexplanon placement. Irregular bleeding can continue for 3-6 months in some cases. The majority of patients continue to report some occasional spotting at the follow-up visit. The most common change with Nexplanon is an irregularity to your normal menstrual bleeding pattern. In studies, one out of ten women stopped using the implant because of an unfavorable change in their bleeding pattern. You may experience longer or shorter bleeding during your periods or have no bleeding at all. The time between periods may vary, and in between periods you may also have spotting.

Wait Until Well After It Has Healed

It goes without saying that you need to wait until a scar has fully healed before any professional tattooist will touch it, but thats not the main point here.

If you recently sustained an injury that has resulted in a scar, it may not be as aesthetically impactful as you think. Over time, collagen breaks down at the site of your original wound and the blood supply is reduced. With each passing month, the scar becomes smoother, softer, and paler as long as you afford it an optimal skin care regime and minimize exposure to the sun. In about 18 months to two years, you will have a much better idea of what you scar will look like. At that point you it wont change much more unless you attempt topical applications such as scar creams. However, bleaching agents and the like can cause more harm than good, so proceed with caution. Long story short, wait for the adequate passage of time before making the decision to use a tattoo to cover up a scar, especially if thats your primary motivation for getting inked in the first place.

Another motivator for waiting until your scar has healed and the skin has formed a firm layer, is pain. A relatively fresh scar, even if ready to accept a tattoo, will hurt more than the same area would before your injury.

How Does It Work

Nexplanon uses a synthetic progesterone, etonogestrel, within the plastic rod. It does not contain estrogen. This rod slowly releases the hormone that prevents ovulation and acts on the cervical mucus to become thicker, which makes it harder for sperm to enter the uterus.

The Implant needs to be inserted by a doctor. To receive an Implant at HSHC, you will need two appointments. The first appointment is a pre-Implant consultation. At this appointment, you will discuss your contraceptive options, get up to date STI swab testing, go over our pre-Implant insertion instructions, and get your prescription for your Implant. This is mandatory, even if you have already discussed Implants with another doctor, already have a prescription, or if you are replacing an old Implant.

The pre-Implant instructions that we give to all of our clients are as follows:

  • No unprotected sex for at least two weeks prior to your insertion date
  • Come prepared to provide a urine sample for a pregnancy test
  • Please alert your doctor or nurse if you have allergies to topical analgesics
  • Pick up the Implant from the pharmacy and bring it with you to your appointment
  • The second appointment is the insertion. There is less flexibility and longer wait times in booking an Implant insertion than a regular appointment. If you are booked for an Implant insertion and miss your consultation, your insertion will be automatically cancelled.

The Women Insider Spoke With Had Varied Side Effects

The 27-year-old teacher, for instance, said she couldn’t confidently attribute any side effects to the implant itself.

“Like many birth controls, there was a weight gain warning,” she said. “I have gained weight, but I’ve also gotten older and my lifestyle is different.”

“I have only had my period once in almost a full year,” Celine said. “There were also noticeable changes in my sex drive for the first 3 months or so, but then everything leveled out.”

“Side effects I experienced included a 15-pound weight gain, extreme sensitivity, easy fluctuations of mood, general fatigue, and light or no periods,” Lauren said. “Other than my unpleasant weight gain, I was crying a lot. I’m a sensitive person to begin with, but a lot of things that I didn’t know I really cared about, got me quite worked up On the plus side, I barely ever got periods, and if I did, it was extremely light.”

But remember that not everyone will have a negative experience with the implant. And for some women, Pesci said, the assurance of really effective contraception is worth potential side effects.

Spotting Or Other Changes In Period Bleeding

Nexplanon may cause changes in your period bleeding, including spotting . In fact, changes in bleeding were a common side effect that people with Nexplanon reported in studies. This was also the most common reason that people had their Nexplanon implant removed early.

    Nexplanon may cause:

    • changes in the heaviness of your bleeding
    • changes in how long your period lasts
    • irregular bleeding

In some cases, you may have no period during treatment with Nexplanon.

In most cases, any changes to period bleeding will occur in the first 3 months after having Nexplanon inserted. These changes may continue as long as you have Nexplanon.

    What might help

Before having your Nexplanon implant inserted, talk with your doctor about what changes in bleeding you may experience.

Spotting and other changes in bleeding are common with Nexplanon, but you should still tell your doctor if you experience these side effects. In some cases, they may be a sign of a different condition, such as pregnancy, or in rare cases, cancer. Your doctor can check that the side effects youre experiencing are from Nexplanon and not another cause.

If changes in bleeding or spotting from Nexplanon are bothersome to you, your doctor may recommend a different birth control option.

My Insurance Was Running Out And I Didnt Want To Risk Not Having Birth Control

I got the Nexplanon implant in October of 2016. I was 25 and had it in for around a year and a half. At the time, my insurance through my parents was running out and I didnât have a full-time job. I didnât want to risk not having birth control if I didnât get a full time job, so I got the implant to be on the safe side. Not because I wanted to. I loved the pill I was on.

Getting it in wasnât bad because the area was numbed, but there was pain in my arm afterwards, which lasted for a few daysâlike someone punched me really hard in the arm. There werenât any mood swings, but there was HORRIBLE acne. I always had almost perfect skin before, then I started to break out every other day, and nothing cleared it up. My period was completely irregular too. I would bleed for three to four months straight, then not get a period for three months, and then it would be back for months again. It was horrible. My period was light most months, but I use a cup exclusively so things got sore inserting a cup every day for months on a light flow. I had to switch back to pads/liners, and I hated using them again.
