Can Tattoos Cause Lymphoedema
Its currently not known if having a tattoo on your breast or chest increases the risk of developing lymphoedema in that area. According to new research, there is very little risk of anything going wrong for tattooed patients when they get a scan.
Wait little risk? Does that mean there is some risk? As it turns out, yes.
Tattoos are made by using a fine needle to deposit ink below both the dermis and epidermis, where, too big for your immune system to break down, most of the coloured particles will remain permanently.
But not all tattoo inks are created equal. Ink compositions can vary not just between colours, but between manufacturers. So, If you’re not careful, as an example, you can end up having an allergic reaction to a particular pigment.
Tattoo inks can contain titanium dioxide, lead, cobalt, chromium, manganese, zinc, copper, nickel and carbon black. They can also contain ferrous pigments such as iron oxides – and this is where an MRI can run into problems.
That’s because MRI is short for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and ferrous materials are magnetic. So when you get into a strongly magnetised tube, and you have ferromagnetic particles under your skin, well, maybe you’re not in for such a good time.
And according to the FDA, some patients can experience swelling or burning in the tattoo during an MRI.
How To Tell If My Tattoo Is Healing
If youre not sure if your tattoo is healing properly, here are some things to look out for:
- The area around your tattoo should be dry and crusty.
- The tattoo should start to scab over within the first few days after getting it done.
- If the tattoo becomes red, swollen, or starts oozing pus, then you may have an infection and should consult a doctor.
Once your tattoo has healed properly, you can resume your normal showering routine. However, you should still take care not to scrub the area too harshly, as this could cause the ink to fade.

New Research On Tattoos And Mris
A January 2019 study shows that these side effects happen very rarely. Its authors worked with hundreds of volunteers to discover the reactions of tattoos in MRI machines.
The researchers studied 330 volunteers who had at least one tattoo by scanning them with an MRI machine. Each volunteer had no more than five percent of their body tattooed. In addition, their tattoos had a length of 20 centimeters or shorter. Out of their collective 936 tattoos, 717 tattoos had black ink.
Out of the 330 study participants, only one experienced an adverse effect. This person had several tattoos and had a warm and tight feeling around a wrist tattoo during an MRI. The technologist immediately stopped the MRI when the participant reported this effect. It took less than 24 hours for the feeling to go away and did not require medical help. Another participant felt mild tingling that did not count as an adverse effect. The research team calculated the overall risk of adverse effects as 0.17 to 0.30 percent.

What If You Tattoo Over A Mole
It’s not advised by doctors or tattoo artists to tattoo over a mole. Use Your Clothes To Cover Upor Find Some Better Options
Once you’re comfortable to get in the gym, make sure that your healing ink is protected. “A great way to limit direct contact with the gym equipment and floor is clothing,” Areseneau says. “Typically, it is recommended to wear loose fitting clothing over a fresh tattoo. This will ease the irritation caused by rubbing of clothing. Most athletic gear is pretty tight, but youre also usually not wearing it all day.”
Just make sure to clean and moisturize the area as soon as youre done, he advises. But there are more options for eager exercisers, if you’re willing to get some more aftercare materials.
Tegaderm and Saniderm, two types of adhesive dressings, can help to cover the tattooed area as you heal. Arseneau says they’re great options to serve as barriers against germs for medium and small-sized tattoos.
“A good way to use those products is to apply them to the cleaned, dry tattoo the day after you get it,” he advises. “When you take the absorbent bandage off in the morning, clean and dry the tattoo as recommended. But dont apply any Aquaphor. Just immediately place the Tegaderm or Saniderm over the fresh tattoo. It stays on for three to four days and you dont have to do anything special to it at all. It just heals itself like magic.”
