At the time a Payaya Indian camp, Spanish explorers visited this site in 1691. Between the years of 1773 and 1824, San Fernando de Bexar served as the capital of the province, but its political power had depleted over the following years. It had been renamed San Antonio in 1837 when it became a Republic of Texas county seat.
