Challenges With Laser Tattoo Removal On Darker Skin

Taking a laser to darker skin tones requires patience and a steady hand, its just as important for patients to take things slow as it is for the laser technician.

Melanin absorbs energy and heat, and an inexperienced laser specialist could use the laser for too long or at too high of a setting, causing permanent issues like:

  • Hyperpigmentation: The darkening of skin over time
  • Hypopigmentation: The lightening of the skin in the area of the tattoo.
  • Keloid scars: While rare, keloids are raised scar tissue that develops around the treated area.

Waiting longer between sessions, a higher number of sessions and proper aftercare are all important steps to follow to ensure skin has time to heal adequately between treatments.

  • Before: Skin Type V neck tattoo prior to laser removal treatment
  • After: Results after 5 treatment sessions with MEDermis.

When Will I See Results

Full tattoo removal will typically take 6-12 laser sessions, depending on the size of the tattoo, color of ink, how deep the ink is, and how old the tattoo is. We typically see lightening of the tattoo after your first appointment. Sessions are typically scheduled at least one month apart to give the skin time to heal between treatments.

Answer: Laser Tattoo Removal Is Definitely Possible For Darker Skin Types

Laser Tattoo Removals on Dark Skin: Before and After!

Hi, It is indeed possible to remove tattoos, even in darker skin types with lasers. In my practice, we deal predominantly only with darker skin types, and I am very happy with both the safety and the efficacy. I now use a Picoway, and this has added significantly to the safety factor where there was some textural change likely with the earlier Q switched laser that we had, the pigment clearance with Picoway leaves hardly any scarring or textural change behind. With type V/VI skin, our strategy has been to use lesser fluences and plan for treatments over longer intervals, even upto 3-4 months been sessions. I have performed Picoway laser tattoo removal even in patients with keloids/keloidal tendencies without any problem. The clearance, I feel, is very much dependant on the time interval as much as on the fluence used, so lesser number of sessions would be adequate, too. Good luck!

The Importance Of An Experienced Laser Technician

As a specialist treating a dark skin type, you have to be extremely conservative with the laser settings in order to not pull the pigment from the skin. This means that the darker the skin type, the lower the laser settings youll need, in turn giving you slower results.

Unfortunately, when we explain this during the consultation, many people dont have the patience and dont want to go through with such a long process. Or they will do a few treatments and then give up which is a reason we dont have many examples in our Before and After gallery.

At the end of the day, experience behind the laser will be your best bet for successful tattoo removal, especially for skin types 4 and above.

While experience is key, there are some instances where we may recommend avoiding laser removal.

For example, a skin type 4 or higher with any red ink tattoo could be too risky.

We generally advise against laser removal for these cases as the laser frequency that is used for red will simply pull all the skin pigment out leaving a damaged hypopigmentation scenario.

That is, unfortunately, a permanent situation that many people want to avoid. If youre unsure if youre a good candidate for tattoo removal, a consultation is the best place to start.

Your Immune System Cant Get Rid Of Tattoo Ink On Its Own

Your skin is a complex organ that is regulated by your immune system. Your body can detect foreign substances, such as tattoo ink, and works to get rid of them. In most cases, it can clear these elements with special cells called macrophages. Under normal circumstances, the macrophages absorb potentially dangerous particles and dispose of them.

Tattoo ink poses a problem for the macrophages. While they can absorb it, they cant let it go. If a macrophage that contains tattoo ink ruptures, the ink is absorbed by other macrophages. Thats why tattoos stay in your skin permanently unless you seek cosmetic treatment.

Will Tattoo Removal Work On Dark Skin

Tattoo removal is a particular process that involves a skilled technician using a device capable of removing tattoo ink. The problem that many patients have is that most places might promise to remove all colors on all skin tones, but when it really comes down to it, many of them failmiserably. A failed tattoo removal can leave the patients skin with severe burns and the remnants of the tattoo colors that the device was supposed to remove. Although there are several devices on the market that claim to have success with all skin tones and can remove all colors, we have observed many devices that cannot distinguish darker skin tones from the tattoo and that have not been successful with removing all skin tones.

Unfortunately, there are facilities out there that will trust their technician to choose which part of the skin is tattoo and which is skin rather than having a skilled technician utilize a device that can distinguish the difference for them in order to make the session more productive and safer for the patient. Many lasers that are on the market today have been found to absorb the pigmentation of the skin instead of the tattoo ink, and this can cause scarring from burns to the area. That is why it is so important to locate a tattoo removal office that offers the most effective laser and is well experienced with different skin tones.
