The US Air Force has announced its new policy on tattoos for airmen and women.

It comes after a review of recruitment by Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James last year.

Airmen and women were previously not permitted to have tattoos on the chest, back, arms and legs that were larger than 25% of the exposed body part.

Now, they could have full tattoo sleeves on their arms or large back pieces if they wanted. Ms James said:

“As part of our effort to attract and retain as many qualified airmen as possible, we periodically review our accessions policies. In this instance, we identified specific changes we can make to allow more members of our nation to serve without compromising quality.”

Hand tattoos, meanwhile, will now be limited to one single-band ring tattoo, on one finger, on one hand, so a “more formal military image” can be presented when required at events and with dress uniforms.

This won’t affect existing hand tattoos that were allowed under the previous policy.

Tattoos, brands or body markings on the head, neck, face, tongue, lips and/or scalp will still be banned, however.

The new rules will come into place next month.

It comes after a review of Air Force recruiters showed that almost half of contacts, applicants and recruits had tattoos.

Of these, one of every five were found to have tattoos requiring review or that may be considered disqualifying.

The Air Force is hoping relaxing the rules will open up a new group for potential recruitment.

The Space Force is going one step beyond the Air Force with a neck tattoo policy that gives some young recruits another reason to look to the stars.

The Space Force will permit small neck tattoos, and the Air Force is waiving some size limits on hand tattoos, according to an Air Force Recruiting Service memo leaked recently on the popular Air Force amn/nco/snco Facebook page.

“The tattoo policy has not changed, Air Force Recruiting Service spokeswoman Chrissy Cuttita told Stars and Stripes by email Friday. “New as of May 13, 2022, an Air Force Recruiting Service memo informed recruiters that the two-star AFRS commander may waiver qualified applicants who have small, discreet hand tattoos under specific circumstances.

The waiver allows commanders to ensure the Air Force does not lose quality recruits, she said.

The revised tattoo policies are small concessions. Hand tattoos may not cover more than 25% of an Air Force recruits hand. The Space Force limits neck tattoos to one inch in length in any direction and they may be located only on the back of the neck.

Space Force guardians with neck tattoos cannot qualify to dual track with the Air Force and may only apply for eligible Space Force jobs.

The Air Force has been struggling to meet its recruitment numbers this fiscal year.

Cosmetic tattoos are also permitted.

Cosmetic tattooing is defined as a medical or surgical procedure conducted by a trained and licensed medical professional.

Some people get cosmetic tattoos to cover up scar tissue, or to otherwise make a medical issue less prominent in appearance.

The Coast Guard is perfectly fine with these types of tattoos.

But Here Are Some General Guidelines To Follow:

If your tattoos are in any way offensive, racist, sexist, extremist, or discredit America, unpack your bags.

The Navy has a strict policy regarding the content of tattoos.

They do not allow tattoos that discriminate against religion or national origin.

And any tattoos that suggests gang affiliation or the use of illegal drugs are not allowed.

Likewise, tattoos that are deemed offensive might also not pass the sniff test.

You cannot have any tattoos on your head or scalp, and nothing on the actual ear itself.

As previously mentioned, a neck tattoo cannot exceed the height/width dimensions of one inch.

Tattoos in the U.S. Air Force are allowed on the chest and back below the open-collar uniform as well as on the arms, legs, and as a ring tattoo on one finger on one hand, according to the official policy sent to FOX Television Stations.

According to GAO, every service except the Navy allows recruits and current service members to request waivers for certain tattoo restrictions. However, the watchdog organization said, the services dont consistently lay out the possibility of such waivers or the process for getting them.

Clear guidance on waivers for unauthorized tattoos would provide consistent information about requirements for waiver requests and conditions for approval. This could clarify whether tattoo prevalence affects future or continued military service.

Currently, all services offer recruit waivers for tattoo rules, although the Air Force and Space Force limit such waivers to exceptionally qualified recruits in critical, understaffed career fields. None of the six services, however, outlines how to request waiver approval and what conditions must be met, GAO found. The Navy is the only service that does not offer waivers for current troops. Again, however, the other services fail to specify how to apply for these waivers, and none are clear about which tattoos might qualify for them.
