On a Friday afternoon, the buzz of tattoo guns hum away in a tiny shop hidden in the corner of Seagrape Plaza.
The walls of Paradise Tattoo are covered in portraits of rockstars painted by the shops owner, Dawn Webb.
Its her hobby an escape from designing art for other people for a living.
The Southwest Florida native always wanted to be an artist, but didnt think the dream was realistic, so she took a front desk job at a radiology center out of high school instead.
I worked in doctors offices for 18 years, she said.

One day in the early 2000s, her mother asked her to come along for moral support as she got permanent make-up done at a shop in North Fort Myers owned by tattoo artist Becky Neaves.
Her mother told Neaves about Webbs interest in tattooing, and she and her husband decided to give her a shot at an apprenticeship.
Webb cashed out her 401K to pay for it, and worked part-time in the shop everyday after she got off her day job.
I did that six days a week. Saturdays I worked all day, and Sundays I worked by appointment, but I wanted it so bad, she said.
There werent many female tattoo artists then, and Webb faced harsh criticism in the male-dominated industry.
Her dream had manifested.

Bill was super nice and efficient! Me and my friend were on vacation and leaving the next morning so he squeezed us in as we were only doing small beachy silhouette tattooes on our ankles. The tattoos turned out great! It was a little pricier than I expected but I figured it was a special occasion and he did move some things to get us in quick. Fort Myers Beach Tattoo has been inking the FMB crowd for nearly three decades. Krista Kerr, owner and artist , and her expert staff, Stephanie, Ryan Varefoos and Kelly Jackson offer custom, one-of-a-kind tattoo services, as well as an intense collection of flash images. Photo by MELISSA SCHNEIDER.
Comfortably nestled in the Pelican Plaza, almost directly across the street from the DiamondHead Resort, Fort Myers Beach Tattoo and its talented staff have been inking up locals and visitors for nearly three decades. Opened in 1991 by Bill Hannong, Ohio transplant Krista Kerr quickly rose up the ladder of tattoo fame, beginning with her very first tattoo , later apprenticing for him, working for him, and eventually taking over the shop in 2008 winning national awards for her designs along the way.
I came in and got my very first tattoo by Bill. It was an orchid with black tribal design around it, done around 1992, Krista said. A guy that I was seeing was being heavily tattooed by Bill. So, when I came in to get tattooed, we started talking. I thought it would be great to do, and kept bugging him for an apprenticeship.
Mr. Hannong finally granted Krista her apprenticeship, so she helped out around the shop during spring break for a few seasons.
With a bachelors degree in studio art, Krista certainly has a creative eye for stylistic designs, layouts and patterns, but getting into the art tattooing was a slightly different field she quickly mastered.

Paradise Tattoo Plans To Open New Location Uncertain About Returning To Fort Myers Beach
Tattoo artist and Fort Myers native Dawn Webb began her apprenticeship in North Fort Myers at Custom Bike and Body Art in 2007. After owners of the half motorcycle, half tattoo shop moved to Fort Myers Beach in 2011, they told Webb she had a choice to make.
Webb put in her notice at Radiology Regional Center in March 2012 after working there for more than a decade to take over the tattoo shop by June 2012.
At the time, no one knew who I was, Webb said. I was in a little corner there. We had no signage, so I just put a surfboard on the roof of my car and parked it up by the road that said, Paradise Tattoo. That little surfboard helped me start my customer base.
Paradise Tattoo was an award-winning custom tattoo shop on Fort Myers Beach. Years of work on the business were washed away Sept. 28 as Hurricane Ian devastated Fort Myers Beach and destroyed the building.
