How Long To Keep A Tattoo Wrapped In Cling Film

Youll need to keep your tattoo wrapped in cling film from one to three days. Depending on the size of your artwork this may be longer and your artist will let you know but a general rule of thumb is:

  • Small line-work pieces keep the cling film on for one to two days.
  • Palm-size pieces keep the cling film on for two to three days.
  • Larger artwork the tattoo artist will direct you on how long to keep your cling film in place on bigger tattoos.

After your tattoo is completed, your artist will bandage your tattoo for your trip home. Leave the bandage on for one to three hours. When you take the bandage off, wash it with very warm water and mild liquid hand soap . Pat it dry gently with a paper towel, and let it air dry the rest of the way . Then you will apply a very small amount of Aquaphor Ointment or plain, unscented skin lotion to the tattoo, just enough to lightly moisturize. Do not slather a big, thick coat of product over it just enough for it to stay moist and flexible. If you are using Aquaphor, you can switch to a plain lotion after the first few days. Lotion is generally fine for everyone, your artist will recommend if you would benefit from ointment.

During healing do NOT:

  • Wrap the tattoo after the first night

  • Submerge the tattoo in water. This means baths, pools and oceans. Regular showering is fine.

  • Expose it to strong sunlight

  • Shave over the tattoo

How Much Should You Use

Immediately after you get inked, your tattoo artist will apply a bandage or wrap to the tattooed area on your skin. They will likely advise you to keep that bandage or wrap in place for anywhere from several hours to several days.

Once you remove the bandage or wrap, you need to start a cycle of:

  • gently washing your tattoo with unscented soap and lukewarm water
  • gently drying your tattoo by patting it with a clean paper towel
  • applying a thin layer of Aquaphor or another unscented ointment approved to treat tattoos, such as A and D

DONT re-bandage your tattoo, rub, scratch or pick at your new tattoo. DONT apply alcohol, Neosporin, Vaseline, or petroleum jelly . DONT apply a heavy coat of lotion . DONT expose your tattoo to direct sunlight, swim, sauna, steam or tub for 2 weeks. The sun, salt water, and chlorine all act as a bleaching agent any one of them can ruin your tattoo. The healing process usually takes about 2 weeks, however, this time may vary from person to person. Do NOT listen to friends or tattoo experts. If you have questions, call or visit the Studio, we tattooed you and have your best interest at heart! If you notice fever, drainage that smells or contains pus from the procedure site, or streaks running toward your heart from your tattoo, go to the emergency room immediately

Only Touch The Tattoo With Clean Hands

One of the most essential pieces of advice you can get is to never touch your fresh tattoo without washing the hands first. Cleaning your hands will prevent all kinds of bacteria to transfer to the irritated and tattooed skin, which would otherwise cause infections and health issues. So, when you want to touch the tattoo or apply ointment on it, wash your hands for 20 seconds at least, using lukewarm water and soap.

How Often Should You Put Lotion On A New Tattoo

    • Written By Dan Hunter on June 6, 2018Last Updated: November 8, 2020

During the weeks after getting a new tattoo, the skin becomes very delicate as it tries to regenerate and heal from the trauma caused by the tattooing needles pumping in and out of the area thousands of times a minute.

Most people know that applying a good lotion to the area can help to speed up the healing process by nourishing and hydrating the skin, but many people are unsure about how to properly apply lotion and which lotion to use.

Generally, you should always aim to make sure your tattooed skin is soft and supple to ensure there are no areas becoming exceedingly dry, which can cause the tattoo to crack, and can also cause irritation and itching.

How to Pick Where to Put a New Tattoo | Tattoos

It seems like everyone is an expert on healing tattoosjust ask, and they will tell you that they know the best, fastest, and the only way to do it.

Iâm no expert, but I have a few tattoos and nearly all have healed well â but not all! Iâve gotten quite good at taking care of them over time, through trial and error Iâve learned that the secret is to:

    • Pay attention to how your skin feels and looks.
    • Use good products.

Some will tell you to listen to your artist and do whatever they tell you, to the letter. This isnât necessarily the best advice. I know because Iâve tried it a few times with poor results. Why? Everyoneâs skin is different, every tattoo is different, and thereâs no one-size-fits-all aftercare sheet.

Instead, you should listen to your skin and come up with a custom method thatâs best for you. When you find a product your skin likes, stick with it! Learning how your skin heals best, then improving your personal technique is the secret to fast, safe healing for tattoos both big and small.

In this article, Iâll share what Iâve learned about tattoo aftercare and show you my preferred method. Use it as a jumping off point to customise a method for you.

    Letâs begin!

How Long Does It Take for a Tattoo to Heal?

Your tattoo should be healed after about 23 weeks in terms of appearance. After 45 weeks, your skin should look smooth, and there should be no itching. It can take up to 34 months for all the layers of skin to heal.

Can You Touch Your New Tattoo

Itching is normal during this week, and you can expect scabs may be falling off. The combo of itching and loosening scabs is enough to make anyone want to pick at the tattoo area. But dont! Its important to leave your tattoo untouched as much as possible. Picking at scabs can even disturb the healing ink, causing distortion to the tattoo.

Touchy-feely is great and all, but not on a new tattoo. Beware of admirers that are tempted to touch your ink. Dont allow anything, including hands, to come in contact with your new tattoo. Hands have germs and bacteria that can cause infections.

Wash your hands before you clean your tattoo to ensure you arent spreading germs.

How Often Should I Put Lotion On A Scabbing Tattoo

When your tattoo begins to scab it can become exceedingly dry. Although you may automatically think that applying more lotion is the best solution, you must be very careful.

Although most tattoos scab over very lightly, some tattoos can contain quite thick, dense scabs .

However, these big, thick scabs can also become very absorbent, and by applying too much lotion, especially when the scabs are still wet after cleaning/showering , you can cause the scabs to soak up too much moisture, making them become gooey and gloopy.

The main cause of this is the new layer of lotion trapping moisture beneath it, and with nowhere for the moisture to go, it is absorbed by the scabs. This is known as tattoo bubbling, and these sticky scabs then become much more prone to being pulled or ripped off.

Therefore, you should continue to apply lotion as often as you normally would unless the scabbing becomes very dry and looks like it may begin to start cracking, in which case clean the tattoo and make sure its completely dry before applying a small amount of lotion afterward.

You can make sure the area is completely dry by gently patting it with a clean paper towel to get rid of most of the moisture, and then allowing the tattoo to air-dry for another 10 minutes. Avoid using a towel that may transfer dirt and increase your risk of infection.

Without doing this your tattoo may look dry, but there is likely still moisture trapped within the scabs.

How Do You Sleep With A Fresh Tattoo

Avoid sleeping directly on your new tattoo, at least the first 4 days. The goal is to try your best not to put any pressure on your tattoo and to keep it from touching anything, at least as much as possible. A healing tattoo needs lots of fresh air and oxygen, so try not to smother it while sleeping.

Scabs are part of the normal process of a healing wound. They will fall off by themselves.- Try not to wear tight clothes. That will cause friction and irritate the tattoo. Wear light clothing that will allow the tattoo to breathe.- If your tattoo gets stuck to your clothes or your sheets, do not pull. Un-stick it by putting it under water.- Avoid exposing your tattoo in dusty places, it could cause an infection. Try avoiding animals, because having fur caught in your tattoo can cause an infection as well. Submerging your new tattoo in water is bad you are exposing your tattoo to bacteria that can infect it. Moreover, keeping your tattoo under water will soften the scabs causing them to fall off too early in the healing process. Therefore, your tattoo might need more touch-ups.- Avoid exposing your tattoo to the sun at all costs. So What Kind Of Clothes Should I Wear Over A New Tattoo

What Tattoos Do to the Skin

After getting a tattoo, and during the healing process, which can last between 2 weeks and a month in its initial and most important stage, you should be wearing loose-fitting clothes. That is of course if the tattoo is placed on your body apart from the neck, head, and feet. For those areas, you need to pay special attention, especially in the case of feet tattoo .

Loose clothes will cover the tattoo so much so that it stays protected. There is a lower chance the fabric will stick to the tattoo and introduce contaminants as well. There will be minimal or rubbing of the fabrics against the tattoo, which will significantly minimize healing issues or the chance of an infection.

Note: After getting a new tattoo, it will be wrapped and well protected. You can wear loose clothes over the wrap and not really worry about it. However, when you remove the wrap, loose clothes are essential, because you cannot simply keep the tattoo wrapped forever.

It needs air to breathe and dry out, clot, and form scabs. So, make sure to wear the loosest clothes possible, and if necessary, wrap the tattoo during the first few nights to prevent it from sticking or ruining your clothes and sheets.

    When To See A Doctor

Tattoo care is simple once the process is understood. However, there are still times when a doctor may be needed.

Infection is the most common reason to see a doctor after a tattoo. If a person does not care for it properly, a tattoo can become infected with bacteria.

An infected tattoo will be warm, inflamed, and painful to the touch. The skin may also ooze pus or have a rash.

Blood-borne infections can occur if the tattoo artist used dirty needles or ink. These infections can include:

Can You Shave Over A New Tattoo

It only takes one swipe of a razor to answer this question for yourself. Shaving over your new tattoo is never a good idea for many reasons.

    • Razors harbor bacteria, so prevent infection by not shaving over your tattoo.

    • Shaving over scabs is never a good idea again, infection.

What You Can Use To Let A Tattoo Heal Properly

Its important to get new ink from a licensed tattoo artist. Not only do they have the knowledge and experience to give you a piece of art that you can be proud of, but theyre also knowledgeable about the right aftercare techniques to prevent complications after your session.

The precise aftercare techniques will slightly differ based on the healing process stage youre in.

A fresh tattoo is bandaged for one to two hours. Your tattoo artist may put a small amount of aftercare ointment on, but youll need to take off your bandage to let the wound breathe. At this point, youll need to carefully wash the tattoo wound with antibacterial soap. Pat gently to dry.

Most tattoo artists recommend an ointment called A+D. It contains a combination of petrolatum and lanolin, which may protect your skin during the first several hours after getting your tattoo.

After the first couple of days, you can switch to a lighter, fragrance-free moisturizer, such as Lubriderm or Eucerin. This will also help alleviate itching that often occurs during the healing process.

Other tattoo aftercare tips include keeping your wound out of the sun or submerged in water. Also, avoid picking at an itchy tattoo this can lead to infections and scars.
