Since tattooing has become more mainstream today, there isnt any biblical text that says anything against it. We all strive to be like Our Lord Jesus in both character and actions. The Bible does not say anything against tattoos, but it is advisable to pray and ask for direction from the Holy Spirit before getting one done.

Jesus said that we must love God above all else and our neighbor as ourselves . Its important to consider this when deciding whether or not you should get a tattoo.

Any god that isn’t the Lord is a pagan god. Basically, a pagan god is a false god. “I am the LORD, and there is no other apart from me there is no God,” . This is where the paganism arguments come from. That’s why some believe tattoos are sinful and prohibited. God wanted His people to be separate.

Bible Verses Concerning Piercings And Tattoos

The Bible warns us against cuttings in our flesh in Leviticus 19:28 which says, Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord.

Our young people do not realize what they are doing has its roots in witchcraft and the practices of false religions. Those that have made trips to other parts of the world have viewed the bodies of those who have not only pierced and tattooed their bodies but have gone further, with mutilating their bodies. It is repulsive to see someone deform the body that the Lord made in perfection. The Lord admonishes us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are Gods. If we are to glorify God in our bodies, how do body piercings glorify Christ?

In 1 Kings 18, we find the story of Elijah contesting the evil prophets of Baal . The prophets of Baal worked themselves into a frenzy trying to get their god, Baal to show himself mightier than the true and living God. However, the God of Elijah proved to be the true God. During the frenzy of the Baal worshipers they began to disfigure their bodies as we see from this scripture in 1 Kings 18:28: And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

Nice placement

The Truth About Tattoos and Piercings covers the controversial topic of modern tattoos and piercings. How should Christians view tattoos and piercings?

Its nearly impossible to go out in public these days without seeing someone with a tattoo or body piercing. The movie stars have them. The sports figures have them. In fact, a news story dated April 30, 2009 says that Barbie now has them. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Barbie doll, Mattel has created a new Barbie, complete with tattoos and a toy tattoo gun so children can stamp themselves with washable tattoos. The American Academy of Dermatology website says that 24 percent of people 18 to 50 reported having a tattoo. A Harris Poll dated February 12, 2008, stated that 32 percent of those aged 25 to 29 had a tattoo, and 25 percent of people 30 to 39 had them. Because tattoos and piercings are so popular, its a topic young people have to deal with and about which they naturally have many questions. Is it right for a Christian to get a tattoo? Is it right to have multiple piercings in your ears? What about a ring in your nose? Parents dont always know how best to answer these questions.

Does Leviticus Condemn Piercings

The passage that is most often pointed to as a condemnation of piercings doesnt actually mention piercings at all. Leviticus 19:28 says, Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.

The interesting thing about this passage is that it is often read without context. The surrounding passages refer to other rituals associated with paganism. The verse directly before Leviticus 19:28 states, Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard . And the verse before that? Do not eat any meat with the blood still in it .

Christians, of course, cut their hair and eat meats that arent kosher. The context implies that this directive of the Lord was specifically for the Israelites, meant to keep them from engaging in activities that were part of the pagan rituals of their neighbors.

Another key phrase in Leviticus 19:28 is for the dead in mourning, pagan worshippers would mutilate their bodies, often by slashing, to appease angry gods and hopefully help the dead find favor. This is similar to what occurs in 1 Kings 18 when Elijah is facing off with the prophets of Baal. In order to get Baals attention, the Bible says, They shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed . This seems to be in a different category than piercings.

Tattoos In The Bible Today

In 1977, a part of an Egyptian priests body was found that dated back to 1000 BC. It had tattoos on his arm and chest, depicting gods like Ra with hawk-like nose holding snakes, while hieroglyphics were inscribed below it. This is proof of how tattooing has been around for thousands of years, even before Jesus Christ walked this earth.

Weigh The Costs And Avoid Confrontation

Rebellion against authorities and a wish to express your individuality is often a part of growing up. But be careful. If your parents would be hurt by you getting a tattoo, it is not worth it. Sometimes you will have to make choices your parents disagree with, as you grow up and seek your own way in life. But even where we disagree, we should always try to respect our parents and not seek confrontation over things that are not important, like a tattoo.

The Principle Of Influence

The Old And Bizarre History Of Tattoos

Lets begin by examining a passage in 1 Corinthians 11. A rather unusual discussion takes place in this chapter concerning the wearing of veils. The apostle Paul writes, But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved . Verse 6 goes on to say, For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.

The department issued a new policy: officers could get tattoos only if they were hidden by their uniforms. The reason? Because of the message tattoos send. Numerous news stories on the internet discuss the problem of tattoos and body piercings in the workplace. One article from Fox News points out that some employers are having to write very specific dress codes to address the problem. Many employers are requiring that their staff dress in such a way as to hide their tattoos. The new tattoo Barbie doll was mentioned earlier. Here is an excerpt from an article discussing this new doll. Parents have already rallied up against Mattel, asking for the dolls to be pulled off the market. One parent asked, Whatever will they bring out next? Drug addict Barbie? Alcoholic Barbie? Why are parents rallying against Mattel? Because in our society tattoos have negative connotations.

Tattoos And Piercings: What Does The Bible Have To Say About Them

There is a lot of controversy behind the allowing of tattoos and piercings in the modern church today. Is it really sinful for a Christian to get a piercing or tattoo? The conversation starts with a command given in Leviticus 19:28 saying,You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.

The book of Leviticus is essentially a database of over 600 commandments that God gave to the people of Israel as they prepared to enter the promised land. Many of these laws are universal in principle staying timeless and true until today.

But there were also many laws in the Bible that were more civil and cultural than they were principle-based. Some of those laws included laws on slaves, dietary restrictions and so on. The prohibitions of tattoos and piercings fell under this category meaning there is a chance that it no longer applies to todays modern context.

To know whether a law applies or not, we must come to understand why such a law was given in the first place. God prohibited tattoos and piercings as a means to set people apart from pagan tribes that used these practices as worship to their gods and deities.

God prohibited tattoos and piercings not because of the act itself but because of the spiritual association it had. Today, tattoos and piercing are no longer exclusively used for paeanistic practices.

Adorning The Body: What The Bible Says About Piercings Of The Body

Song of Solomon 2:15 says, Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes. Foxes sometime in search of food would enter into the grape orchards and devour the grapes and spoil the crop. However, the little foxes were too small to reach the grape bunches so they would chew on the vines and it would kill the whole vine. Instead of the farmer just losing his crop, he would lose his vine which was more disastrous. Spiritually some things we do or allow that we might think are little or insignificant can also be disastrous for us.

If it is expressing individuality you want, consider if there is a less permanent way in which you can express your individuality. Dye your hair. Change your fashion. Get some funky accessories. All these things you can change again as you change. And remember, your preferences and sense of fashion will change as you develop! If you look at pictures of your parents fashion and hair styles 20 years ago and think about how weird they look, remember that is how you may feel about your tattoo, except you are stuck with it!

Our Bodies As A Temple

What the New Testament does discuss is taking care of our bodies. Seeing our bodies as a temple means to some that we should not mark it up with body piercings or tattoos. To others, though, those body piercings are something that beautifies the body, so they dont see it as a sin. They dont see it as something destructive. Each side has a strong opinion on how body piercings impact the body. However, if you do decide you believe body piercing is a sin, you should make sure you heed Corinthians and have it done professionally in a place that sanitizes everything to avoid infections or diseases that can be passed on in unsterile environments.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17: Dont you know that you yourselves are Gods temple and that Gods Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys Gods temple, God will destroy that person for Gods temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

1 Corinthians 10:3: So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Does The Bible Say Anything At All About Tattoos

First of all, the Bible is all about interpretation so you can take things literally word for word or you can find your own meaning which makes sense for you. If you take the Bible word for word, in Leviticus 19:28, its exact translation is: And a cutting for the dead you will not make in your flesh and writing marks you will not make on you I am the Lord. Some modern-day versions of the Bible do have the word tattoo written in the translation and then it reads: Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord. That makes the argument against tattoos seem much stronger but since the word tattoo did not come into the English language until the 18th century, the literal translation of the Bible does not write tattoo at any point. That here is the only explicit mention of body modifications written in the Bible.

You Dont Want To Cause Your Brother To Stumble

There are many people who believe tattoos are sinful and by getting one it can lead those weak in the faith to get one even though their hearts are condemned. It can also offend others. Think about the youth. Love thinks about others. Love makes sacrifices.

24. Romans 14:21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby your brother stumbles, or is offended, or is made weak.

25. 1 Corinthians 8:9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to them that are weak.

Piercings In The Bible

I Regret Tattooing My Entire Face | No Filter | @LADbible TV

The Bible doesnt often address piercings. When it does, its typically a casual mention. For example, all the way back in Genesis, when Abraham sent his servant to ask for Rebekahs hand for his son Isaac, one of the gifts he sent to Rebekah was a gold nose ring .

A couple of times, the Bible does mention piercings in a negative way along with fine robes and linen garments. The issues in such passages seem to be haughtiness and neglecting the poor, not the wearing of jewelry and clothing itself. See Isaiah 3:18-23:

In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces, the earrings and bracelets and veils, the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, the signet rings and nose rings, the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.

One passage in the Bible shows a positive correlation with piercings. As God talks about His lavish love for Israel in Ezekiel 16, comparing Jerusalem to His wife, He says, And I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head . It seems unlikely that God would paint an image of Himself engaging in a sinful practice. Instead, the passage shows this as God honoring and loving Jerusalem.

However, there is one verse that may not cast piercing in a favorable light.
