How To Book A Tattoo Appointment

What Questions Shouldnt Be Asked While Booking Tattoos

How to Properly Book a Tattoo Appointment! // missalannanielsen

There are a few questions that you should avoid asking while booking a tattoo appointment.

First, dont ask about the price. This is considered rude and its best to wait until the artist has had a chance to assess your tattoo design before discussing the cost.

Second, dont ask about the pain. Tattooing is painful, but its different for everyone. Some people handle it better than others, so its best not to focus on the pain.

Third, dont ask about the healing process. The artist will go over this with you before and after your tattoo, so theres no need to ask about it beforehand. Just relax and enjoy the experience!

Prepare For The Appointment

Once you have booked the tattoo appointment, you need to prepare. Be sure to be well-hydrated and bring a bottle of water with you. Eat and sleep well the day before the appointment. Dont go to the appointment on an empty stomach as you may be in the chair for several hours. Treat your skin like a canvas by preparing it for the new artwork. Shower and moisturize before the appointment. Do not drink alcohol prior to getting the tattoo. Some artists will refuse to complete a tattoo if you are under the influence. Plan the session for a time when you wont be rushed.

What Is The Benefit Of Having A Custom Tattoo Design Before My Tattoo Appointment

Arriving at a tattoo parlor with your custom tattoo design will save you time and ensure that youre getting the exact design you want. Often, if you want a custom design at your appointment, you will wait hours for the in-store artist to design the tattoo before applying. And theres no guarantee that you will like the final product.

Things You Should Know Before Booking A Tattoo Appointment

Before I started getting tattooed on a regular basis, I had no idea how the whole process worked.

I followed a lot of tattoo artists on Instagram, but assumed that booking a tattoo appointment would be a lot like booking in to get my hair done or my teeth cleanedyou call the shop, request a day, and youre in.

It turns out, its not that simple.

While, yes, there are plenty of tattoo shops that offer walk-in availability for flash tattoos or small designs, booking a larger, custom tattoosespecially with a popular artisttakes a lot of patience, flexibility, and a little bit of luck.

Here are some things you should know before trying to book a tattoo appointment with your favorite artist

All artists have different booking procedures. Almost every artist Ive worked with has a different tattoo booking procedure. Some require you to fill out a form on a shop or personal website, others book through Facebook or Instagram messaging, and some use tattoo-booking apps for scheduling.

The majority of artists Ive worked with book through email. They ask clients to send them booking requests via email, usually with specific criteria that a potential client needs to fill out.

Read up on your artists booking procedures and make sure you follow all instructions and requirements. If you do not include all the necessary information in the initial booking request, your request will likely get passed over and you wont get an appointment.

Provide A Few Dates And Times You’re Available For An Appointment

  • The artist will tell you if they have slots open when youre available. Pick a few dates that you have free and tell your artist when you can come in for a consultation or tattoo. Make sure you let them know if you only have certain hours of the day free so your artist can find a time where they can work on your piece without feeling rushed.
  • Im available in the afternoons after 4 PM on weekdays and am completely open on weekends to come in.
  • My weekdays are busy, but I have every Saturday this month available to come in.
  • Im planning on visiting town from August 1219, and was wondering if you had any slots available at that time.

The First Tattoo Appointment: What To Do

The process of getting your first tattoo can be a little discomforting and perturbing. We understand that sometimes you dont even know where to start. So, heres an A-to-Z guide that will help you kick the stress and go get inked!

In order to get your tattoo, you should book an appointment first. In this guide, we will cover everything you ought to know about your first tattoo appointment and how to make it a pleasurable experience.

    Dress For Your Tattoo Appointment

Make sure you wear clothes that allow easy access to the area thats going to get tattooed. Think loose and comfortable clothes. Theres no need to dress up or be constricted its about accessibility and ease.

    How To Tackle Potential Pain

If the area in question is prone to pain, this will be a great time to get in touch with your meditative side and practice some deep breathing techniques. If at any point the pain becomes too much, let your artist know. A good artist will get to a stopping point and allow you to take a breather. Use this time to get your head back in the game.

A general rule of thumb is to keep the dressing on for a few hours especially if you plan on spending the rest of the day out and about. When you get home, be sure to wash your hands before you remove the dressing. Remember, a fresh tattoo is an open wound. Dirt or bacteria can damage it or slow the healing process.

After you take the dressing off, wash the tattoo with your artists recommended cleanser or a gentle, unscented soap. You should avoid using any soap with fragrances or alcohol, as these ingredients can cause irritation.

After you wash, gently pat the area dry with a clean towel. Whatever you do, dont rub! Rubbing can pull at the skin and may cause ink fallout.

If youre dealing with itchy, dry skin, apply a thin layer of your artists recommended ointment or a gentle, unscented lotion. As with the cleanser, you should avoid using anything with irritants like fragrance or alcohol.

Most artists will give you a verbal rundown of how to take care of your new ink and send you home with a handout to reference later. You should always follow your artists aftercare instructions.
