How To Choose A Permanent Lip Color

What Getting A Lip Blush Tattoo Is Really Like | Macro Beauty | Refinery29

The permanent lip color can be done in any shade of red, pink, or orange, but since the results last up to 5 years, you want to be sure youll like wearing the color for all that time.

Thats why most clients go for subtle, flesh-toned shades that are suitable for any occasion and match any makeup look.

Your artist can help you with the color choice, and you should take their recommendations seriously. They have a sharp eye and an extensive knowledge of PMU color theory, so theyll be able to match the pigments to best complement your skin tone and undertone.

Note: Having the lip tattoo treatment during your menstrual cycle may increase your sensitivity.

What To Expect While The Lips Are Healing

Your lips will appear a lot darker and intense than what they will look like once healed. You need to trust the healing process! Over the first few days they will be at their darkest. They might scab and flake, this is completely normal. While they heal, this will fade to reveal a much lighter colour. The lips tend to fade around 70-80%! Please keep in mind that everyoneâs skin will heal differently! The true colour of the tattoo will not be revealed until after 6 weeks. The touch up is then completed at 6-8 weeks to perfect any areas that need some extra attention, as well as add more colour if needed!

Is There Any Downtime Post

Amy Jean advises allowing three to five days downtime where you arent required to be in a public setting or in close proximity to having people talking in close range. Its generally fine, but psychologically you may think your lips are entering the room before you do! She also notes that the colour is extremely rich for two days before the lips start to shed the excess dead skin. Afterwards, the colour beneath becomes about 50 per cent less intense.

There Is Some Healing Involved

While theres no downtime for this treatment , it takes about four to five days to heal completely. Despite Drummonds warnings that my lips would dramatically darken post-treatment, I still freaked out a little when I woke up to an unexpected raisin color the next morning instead of the rosy pink shade we had discussed. During the healing process, the excess color flakes off, explains Drummond, which explains the temporary change. By the time the second morning rolled around, all that remained of the dark color was restricted to the outer edges of my mouth. By morning three, I saw only the soft pink we had agreed upon.

Lip Tattoo Retention And Guarantee Guidelines

Lip Blush Tattoos: Everything You Need to Know

The lifecycle of your lip tattoo can vary, and these timelines below are only a guide. There are of course exceptions, and outliers to any guideline:

  • Lip Blush: 3 Years
  • Lip Contour: 3 Years

The body’s natural response to foreign material, like tattoo pigments, is to remove it. This is the natural healthy response, and so lip tattoo professionals are always up against the unknown when it comes to how effective the body will be in response to pigments. There are no guarantees, warranties, or assurance, express or implied on how long your lip tattoo may last – only guidelines. Since lip tattoo is impacted by a variety of factors such as lifestyle, sun exposure, and things that are generally outside of our control there are no certainties about the lifecycle of your lip tattoo.

How Long Does The Procedure Take

My appointment lasted three hours. During the first hour, the technician and I went over the treatment and we chose a lip colour. One of the most important parts is finding your natural vermillion border and my artist did this with a full consultation on my lips. The next two hours are for the lip blush tattooing procedure. Some of this time was also spent on before and after photos.

With its help, they visually increase the lips volume and make them brighter. Visually, contouring with shading resembles the effect of slightly worn lipstick, since the middle of the lips is not stained with pigment.

The contour of the lips is drawn with dark paint, the closer to the inner edge, the more the pigment needs to be shaded. Usually, the colour of the contour and shading is selected depending on the clients wishes. This technique looks good at any age.

What’s Involved In The Lip Tattooing Process

OMG WHAT HAVE I DONE?! Lip Tattoo Experience…….

Topical anaesthetic is applied to the lips to pre-numb the area, Amy Jean explains. We then do a thorough consultation and design the shape using ultra fine pencils. The tattooing itself can take 45 minutes to one-and-a-half hours. You feel pressure on the lips and buzzing from the machine, but some clients have been known to fall asleep! Once the anaesthetic wears off you will not be in pain. You will feel as though the lips are very stimulated.

Note: If youre prone to cold sores, you should take anti-viral medication before your procedure. The stimulation of the needles may potentially cause cold sores to appear, which can negatively impact the healing process.

How Should I Prepare For My Lip Blushing Appointment

Your precare before getting tattooed is very important. You want to make sure you’re hydrated the more hydrated you are, the better results you’ll have. The night before your appointment, try to exfoliate your lips lightly and put on a lip mask. You’ll also want to skip that afterwork glass of wine at least 24 hours before. If you’re someone who gets cold sores, you’ll need to take an antiviral medication at least three days before and at least three days after your lip blush.

“With this procedure, because of the injury that it causes to the lips, it can cause the dormant virus to come out,” Kondratyev says. “It’s supereasy to avoid just take an antiviral medication prior.” Lastly, you’re going to want to also hold off on skin regenerating treatments and serums a couple of weeks prior: “Because the tattoo is on the surface layer of the skin, all those wonderful treatments that keep us young will take the tattoo off. So it’s just important to give it a break two weeks before.”

Dark Lip Colour Neutralising

Dark lips can get lip blush too! If you have darker tones within the lips, this can be neutralised first. Clients who are within the Fitzpatrick Scale 4, 5 & 6 may experience darker tones within their lips. To neutralise the darker tones, this may take anywhere from 1-4 sessions. Please be aware of this before you book! You will not be able to achieve your desired colour in one session only. It is recommended that warmer colours are used, rather than cooler-toned colours.

You MUST send through a photo of your lips or ask for a consultation BEFORE you book an appointment.

If you suffer from hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation or keloid scarring, this unfortunately may not be a possible option for you.

Typical Healing Schedule For Lip Tattooing

1-2 days after procedure – Your lips will look 50-60% brighter, bolder and more solid than your healed result. Immediately after your appointment, your lips will be swollen. This will subside within 24 hours.

3 days after – Your lips will begin to peel and will look very chapped. Do not scratch or pick at your lips this can cause scarring and will pull the pigment out. As the lips continue to shed, you will see a loss of color. This is all part of the healing process!

4 days after – The skin is now rapidly exfoliating and will shed evenly if left alone. The color under the exfoliating skin will continue to appear light until the epidermis takes on its more transparent characteristics. Again, it is extremely important not to pick at any dry or flakey skin! For many people, the peeling will be over by day 5 but it is not unusual to continue for another day or 2.

30-40 days after – Now is the time to critique your lips! The tattoo has now become part of the dermis, seen under the epidermis. It is perfectly normal for some areas of the tattoo to have lost pigment this is why the touch up appointment is required. During your touch up, 6-12 weeks after your initial procedure, any sparse areas can be filled and the color can be brightened if you so wish.

How To Choose A Person To Do Your Lip Tattoos

Finding the right tattoo artist, or aesthetician for permanent makeup, is key to minimizing side effects. Ideally, youll want to get the procedure done at a studio with a licensed artist.

In some states, tattoo parlors need to be registered within the state they operate, displaying a valid certificate on site. However, this is not necessary in every state and it is worth checking state regulations regarding this.

Youll also want to make sure that the artist uses inks meant for tattoos, as well as proper cleaning and disinfecting practices. A reputable artist will wear gloves and use brand-new needles, inks, and trays.

Its also important to keep in mind that some tattoo artists might be more experienced with tattooing the lip area than others. Before going under the needle, ask your artist about their experience with lip tattoos specifically.

The artist should also have a portfolio of their work available so that you can determine if you like their techniques and artistry. Simply put, not all professionals who work with permanent ink are qualified to create lip tattoos.

Lip Blush Tattoo Costs

Lip Blush Tattoo: Tesstattoo’s Success Story & Before and After

The cost of a lip blush tattoo will vary depending on your location and the studio or artist you choose to do your procedure. Prices can range between $400 and $1,500.

Many tattoo artists that specialize in lip blush tattoos will require a deposit in order to book an appointment.

Kondratyev says that her pricing is $400 for the first session, $200 for a second session, and $300 for a refresh appointment that can happen anywhere between 6 and 18 months after the initial procedure.

If it is your first time getting a lip blush tattoo, you may need two sessions to achieve the look you want. Kondratyev recommends that all new lip blush clients come in for two sessions.

The first session establishes the blush on the lips, and the second session touches up anything that may have healed unevenly, she says. Minor tweaks can be tended to on the second session as well as just adding final saturation.

Even though lip blush tattoos can last a few years, the color can start to fade. Sun exposure, smoking, and using exfoliating products on your lips can cause fading to happen faster. To keep the color and lines fresh, Kondratyev suggests yearly refresh appointments to add to the overall look and longevity.

What Are Lip Tattoos

Lip Blush Tattoos: Everything You Need to Know

Generally placed inside the mouth, a lip tattoo is exactly what it sounds likea design inked onto the lip’s skin. These tattoos can be any design, just like a tattoo on any other part of your body. Though, keep in mind when choosing what to get inked that the area is much smaller and more sensitive.

Simple designs definitely work best, says Jade Jay, a professional tattoo artist at The Tattoo Temple in Zaandam, the Netherlands. Id say goes as simple and bold as you can. Small details are more likely to disappear.

Besides keeping it small and simple, Jay says that you can opt for whatever design you want. If you want color, thats possible! If you want black ink, thats possible as well.

Its also important to keep in mind the longevity of those done in this area when considering a lip tattoo. The lip is a popular choice for tattoos, but its not as permanent as other parts of your skin. While tattoos are typically considered to last forever, lip tattoos tend to last only one to five years. This is due to the rapid turnover of cells in the lip area, which sheds the ink quickly.

There is no guarantee on how long it will last, says Jay.
