Immediately after treatment, an ice pack will be applied to soothe the treated area. Youll be told to apply a topical antibiotic cream or ointment. You should use a bandage or a patch to protect the site.

You can shower the next day, but its best to avoid scrubbing the affected area. The treated area should also be covered or protected with sunscreen when youre in the sun. You shouldnt pick at the area because picking makes scarring more likely.

Which Is The Best Option

If you have an old ink brow tattoo, laser is the best removal option. For cosmetic tattoos, such as microblading, powder ombre brows, microshading, choose saline removal. If the tattoo is too saturated, laser is also a good option.

What Can You Expect From The Process

When you come into Still Waters Day & Medical Spa for tattoo removal, well give you a pair of glasses to protect your eyes from the laser. Well also apply some anesthetic to the area being treated to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the process.

For the first several days after your treatment, youll want to keep the area hydrated with a layer of antibiotic healing ointment. Keep it bandaged with sterilized gauze and refrain from putting any other creams or makeup to the area that has been treated. After three days, the bandage can be removed, but youll still want to keep the area as clean and dry as you can. At this point, you can moisturize the area with Aquaphor or vaseline. Vitamin E can also be helpful, as it helps to restore damaged skin cells. Whenever you go outside in the sun, wear a sunblock of at least SPF25+.

You can shower once you remove your bandage to keep the treatment area clean. You should make sure you are gentle with the treatment area and use mild soap. You will want to avoid high-pressure water and pat the area dry. You shouldnt soak the area until it is completely healed, so you will want to avoid baths, swimming pools, and hot tubs as this can impede the healing process.

Cosmetic tattoos or permanent make-up can be removed with laser treatment. Tattooed eyebrows, eyeliner, and lip liner can be removed or faded. When working around the eye area, particular care is taken by our doctors to ensure that there is no eye damage, and you may be required to wear eye shields that sit on the cornea for the removal of permanent eyeliner tattoos. The laser used to remove these pigments can also remove hair and this can be a problem when removing eyeliner, and eyebrow tattoos. Furthermore, with cosmetic tattoos, it is possible for a shift in colour to occur e.g a pink lip liner tattoo may become dark green or black. Although, this darker colour can still be treated with laser, it may not appear aesthetically pleasing during the period of removal. Therefore, test patching on a small area may usually be required first on some tattoos. An alternative form of tattoo removal using the Erbium laser can be performed as a first line treatment if a colour shift is suspected. The Erbium laser works on the principle of vapourising a fine layer of skin with the tattoo in it.

Will Laser Treatments Completely Remove My Tattoo

Your tattoo may not be completely removed, which is relatively common. Some colors of tattoo dye resist laser removal, and some pigment is too deep to be reached with the lasers that are currently available. Certain colors may be easier to remove than others. Blue/black tattoos respond particularly well to laser treatment, because they are better at absorbing light. The response of other colors is being studied.

What Tattoos Can Be Removed

Modern tattoo removal lasers are effective at removing most tattoos, but not all tattoos can be removed completely. Factors such as color, location, the density of the ink, and age can impact the overall success of the tattoo removal process.

Older tattoos are typically the best candidates for removal, as the ink particles weaken over time and are easier to break down. Black ink is typically easiest to remove, as it absorbs light more than other colors.

Skin type is also a factor when performing laser tattoo removal. Since darker skin types have more melanin, certain colors of ink are not able to be targeted. Black ink is safe to treat on all skin types however extra precaution should be taken with those with more pigment in their skin to avoid possible damage to the skin.

At EradiTatt, we consider all of these factors when developing your individual treatment plan. We have great success rates of complete removal on a variety of skin tones, ages, and tattoo locations. View our tattoo removal gallery to see the results other patients have experienced.

There are some steps youll need to take before your first treatment. If you want to see the best results, make sure to follow your technicians orders.

Your skin mustnt be tanned or sunburned in any way . Several weeks before treatment, take extra precautions to protect yourself from the sun. Wear sunscreen every time you go outdoors.

Make sure youre properly hydrated when you go into each session. If youre a smoker, now is the perfect time to quit. The healing process will be easier and faster if you dont smoke.

In the days leading up to your treatment, avoid shaving, waxing, and exfoliating the area. Its also vital that you dont take any aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs, as these can sometimes increase bleeding.During your consultation, your technician will provide a complete list of pre-treatment instructions. Follow them to a tee!

How Many Treatments Will You Need

The number of treatments you need to fully remove a tattoo will depend on several factors, but most people will be able to remove tattoos within six to 12 treatments.

One factor that may affect how many treatments youll need may be the density of the skin where the tattoo is placed. For example, tattoos that are placed on thinner skin will generally need fewer treatments to remove, while tattoos placed on denser skin will generally require more treatments. Other factors that will determine how many treatments you will need include:

New vs Old Tattoos

It takes more treatments to remove new tattoos than it takes to remove old tattoos. In part, this is because the pigment in a new tattoo is more vibrant and will require more treatments to completely shatter and remove, whereas older tattoos have already naturally faded and may be more responsive to laser energy.

Black vs Colorful Tattoos

As a rule, black and gray tattoos are much easier to remove than colorful tattoos. This has to do with the light wavelengths that are used to remove tattoos. For example, the ink that responds better to laser treatments includes red and black ink, while pigments that will be harder to remove include blue and green. Pastel colors are also harder to remove than darker colors.

Small vs Large Tattoos

What Should You Do Before Treatment

Laser treatments are highly advanced, so its very important to prepare your skin for your appointment by following preparation guidelines. One of the biggest rules to follow is avoiding direct contact with the sun for at least two weeks to prevent hyperpigmentation. If you are planning to go outside, you should wear SPF 30 to 40 for skin protection.

So you didn’t believe your Mom when she said you’d regret getting that tattoo — the multicolored, fire-breathing dragon that starts at the small of your back, reaches up to your shoulder blades and wraps its orange flames around your biceps. Now, a mere seven years later, you have a shot at a terrific job in banking, still one of the more conservative businesses around, and you are concerned that your symbol of youthful self-expression could create problems in your new career.

Well, you’re not alone. Tattoos have become part of American mainstream culture over the past couple of decades. Some estimate that more than 10 million Americans have at least one tattoo, and there are about 4,000 tattoo studios now in business in the United States . One busy physician who specializes in tattoo removal — he’s removed tattoos from some of the most famous tattoo artists — estimates that about 50 percent of those who get tattoos later regret them. For years, these people had little recourse, and existing removal techniques were invasive and painful. But that’s changing.

Keep The Treated Area Dry And Clean

One of the most important steps you can take to care of your skin after laser tattoo removal is to keep the treated area dry and clean. Use tepid water and a gentle cleanser to clean the area gingerly. Then, use a soft towel to pat the area dry.

During the first 72 hours following your laser removal session, you should apply an antibiotic ointment as directed and keep the treated area covered with a bandage. You should change the bandage at least daily. Both the antibiotic ointment and the bandage helps to keep the treated area clean.

What Are The Side Effects Of Tattoo Removal

Almost every patient will experience some side effects of treatment in the first few days after receiving their laser treatment. Not surprisingly, the skin will be red, irritated, and sensitive. In some cases, there will also be blistering and bruising. Something many people arent prepared for is the way their skins natural pigmentation changes. Tattoo removal lasers are designed to target and breakup pigments, and sometimes, this includes the skins natural pigments. This can lead to either hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation . Changes to skin color as well as the other immediate side effects are temporary. As the skin recovers it should return to normal. This is why you need to wait six weeks or longer between treatments to ensure the skin is completely healed before retreatment.

How Tattoos Are Inked Into The Skin

When you get a tattoo, multiple needles puncture your skin, which drags both big and small particles of ink through the epidermis into the dermis. However, this doesnt mean to say your body is entirely happy with the procedure.

Your immune system will recognise that a foreign substance has penetrated your skin and will send white blood cells to come and deal with this threat. But seeing as the particles of ink are rather sizeable compared to the small white blood cells, they do not get broken down or removed.

Consequently, tattoos stay put as a permanent fixture. The reason why they fade is because white blood cells will still eat away at smaller bits of pigment and carry these away through the lymphatic channels of your skin, towards the liver and out of your body.

    How The Picosure Laser Works

Ultra short pulse lasers are used for tattoo removals, which operate at the picosecond level. Take a decimal point, add eleven zeros then a numerical digit and youve got the super-quick speed of picoseconds.

A modern laser, such as our PicoSure machine, is tuneable within a narrow frequency range, typically between 500 and 750 nanometres. This allows for treatment of the full colour spectrum of tattoo inks including red, orange, and yellow.

As you can see on the video, treatment with a laser results in what is called frosting, a shockwave at the particle level. This usually lasts up to 20 minutes after the treatment, not seconds as stated in the video.

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work

Laser beams use concentrated bursts of energy to heat up the ink beneath the skin, which breaks the ink into smaller particles. Tattoos with different colors might require the use of multiple lasers operating at different frequencies. Those smaller ink particles can then be eliminated naturally by the bodys own immune system.

Types Of Lasers: The Ink Colors They Treat & Their Side Effects

Today, laser tattoo removal specialists use three different types of Q-switched lasers, and each are more useful than the other in removing certain ink colors. Because heat is produced by these lasers and the skin’s layers are penetrated at various depths, there are some side effects to consider. And despite the picosecond laser revolutionizing the art of tattoo removal when it was introduced in 2013, it too comes with side effects and breaks up some ink pigments better than others.

Q-switched Ruby laser:The light wavelength of 694nm makes this useful for removing blue, black and green pigments.

    • Side effects: scarring, change in the skin’s texture, hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation

Q-switched Nd:YAG laser: This laser can operate alone at a wavelength of 1064nm , or with a frequency-doubling crystal to shorten the wavelength to 532nm .

    • Side effects: According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, hyperpigmentation and textural changes are potential side effects, but they are infrequent, and the incidence of hypopigmentation is a lot lower than with the ruby laser.

Q-switched Alexandrite laser: This laser operates at a wavelength of 755nm, which resides between those of the ruby and neodymium: YAG lasers. It is excellent for the removal of green, blue and black tattoos.

    • Side effects: textural changes and transient hypopigmentation

Failing To Respect Melanin Pigment Enough

Tattoo Removal: Before/After Before and After Photos

Epidermal melanin pigment is the main competing chromophore present in the skin when treating tattoos with Q-switched lasers. Failure to lighten the skin or lower the treating fluence enough can result in temporary pigmentary alterations or even scarring. Some temporary pigment alterations, either hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation, almost always occurs 4 to 6 weeks after laser treatment of a tattoo however, longer-lasting pigmentary alterations can occur, especially if one does not compensate for patients with increased melanin pigment either from a tan or from genetics. When treating with the ruby or alexandrite lasers as opposed to the Nd:YAG laser, one should use relatively lower energies than one would use in lighter-skin individuals. Some dark-skinned and almost all tan patients should be treated with bleaching agents prior to the first laser treatment. I also insist that patients cover their tattoos with a bandage or clothing every time they are in the sun. If they forget to do this for a few days or simply wear sunscreen , I tell them to repeat the story to the laser. The laser does not care why their skin is dark, however it will see the skin more readily if it is tan and more easily damage it. I then send them away with bleaching agents and ask that they return in 2 to 3 weeks when the surface of the skin is lighter. Patients who properly cover their tattoos, but who have been in the sun, are easily identifiable .
