Time Factor For Other Types Of Blood Donations

Donating red blood cells, plasma, or platelets can take 90 minutes to 3 hours.

During this process, since only one component is being removed from the blood for donation, the other components will have to be returned back into your bloodstream after being separated in a machine.

Platelet donations will require a needle to be placed in both arms to accomplish this.

Will The Recipient Know Who I Am

At IVF1, we keep the identity of donors and the recipients confidential . However, it is very likely that at some point, the recipients or their children will learn your identity. New technologies such as facial recognition are now widely available. DNA testing services such as 23andMe and AncestryDNA can identify a persons relatives from a large database. This is true even if you have never used those services. If a relative of yours has used these services then it can be used to find your identity.

Am I Eligible If I Only Have One Ovary

You will need two functioning ovaries in order to be eligible. There are many factors to take into consideration when screening and accepting donors into our program. One of the most important things we look at is a donors expected ovarian reserve. We do this by evaluating blood work and something called an Antral Follicle Count. Antral follicles are small follicles that we can see and measure with ultrasound to estimate the ovarian reserve. This helps us to determine how much stimulating medications will need to be used and the chance for a successful pregnancy using in vitro fertilization. The number of antral follicles are an indication of how many eggs we should expect to be able to stimulate and potentially develop into mature eggs to be able to retrieve and freeze.

All egg donors must have blood tests for infectious diseases before as part of the screening process before they are accepted as donors. If you received a blood transfusion, then you can be reassured that the blood was screened and totally safe. If you have received an organ transplant, then you may need to take long-term medication which could prevent your clinic accepting you as a donor. In this case, it is best to discuss this with the clinic staff who can advise on the best course of action.

The Egg Donor Process

Egg donation involves the full treatment of in vitro fertilization . Once a donor is selected, any screening that has not been completed is done. The donor is fully informed of the risks and benefits of the procedures involved. Next, the donors cycle is scheduled, and she begins injectable gonadotropin treatment, including monitoring with ultrasound and blood tests. She then has an egg retrieval done under anesthesia. The embryos are created with the sperm of the recipients partner or sperm donor. The embryos may be transferred into the recipient in a fresh or frozen cycle.

If a recipient selects a donor who has previously cycled and has frozen eggs, the eggs are thawed, fertilized, and the embryos are transferred to the recipient.

Can I Donate Eggs More Than Once

Yes. After each donation, we will review the results very closely. Donors that were reliable and who responded well to fertility medications, may be asked to donate again. We require that a pregnancy be achieved at least once in order to donate a third time or more. we will allow egg donors to donate eggs a maximum of six times.

You are not required to donate multiple times. It is your choice to donate again if you are asked.

What You Need To Know About Becoming An Egg Donor

If youve ever wondered about donating your eggs, but have a ton of questions about the process, youre not alone. Here, Dr. Brian Levine, of the Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine in New York City, Dr. Kate Devine and Michele Purcell, RN, of Shady Grove Fertility in Washington D.C., answer some commonly asked questions about egg donation, what to expect from the process, and things to look out for to ensure your safety throughout the process.

Who Will Use My Donated Eggs

Can You Donate Blood If You have A Tattoo?

Egg donation is a treatment option for women who do not produce enough normal eggs but are otherwise able to be pregnant. Some of these women have malfunctioning ovaries or entered menopause at an early age. Others are at an age when they produce eggs less readily, even with fertility drugs. Still others tried standard IVF but produced poor quality eggs or embryos.

Less commonly, women decide to use donor eggs because they are aware of an increased risk for inherited disease in their biological offspring. For example, the woman herself may be healthy, but she and her partner may both carry a gene for the same disease. This creates a risk in the child if it inherits the altered gene from both parents. Using an egg donor who does not carry the gene eliminates this risk.

Most often, donor eggs are used by women in their late 30s or 40s who are attempting to become pregnant. Very few women under the age of 36 use donor eggs. At IVF1, we do not have an upper age limit for the recipient of donor eggs. It is possible that women who are in their 50s or even 60s may receive the eggs you donate.

At IVF1, we do not discriminate based on sexual preference or marital status. It is possible that your eggs may be used by a single woman who may also use donor sperm. Lesbian couples may opt to use donor eggs with a known or anonymous sperm donor. Male couples may also use donor eggs with a gestational carrier as long as one of the males provides the sperm to fertilize the eggs.

How Long Will It Take To Replenish The Blood You Donated

The time it takes to replenish blood from a blood donation can vary from person to person. Your age, height, weight, and overall health all play a role.

According to the American Red Cross, plasma is generally replenished within 24 hours, while red blood cells return to their normal levels within 4 to 6 weeks.

This is why youre required to wait in between blood donations. The waiting period helps to ensure that your body has enough time to replenish plasma, platelets, and red blood cells before you make another donation.

What If I Dont Get Chosen By An Egg Donor Recipient

We are an egg bank, so unlike typical programs, you dont need to wait to be chosen by a recipient in order to begin your cycle. Once youre accepted into the program, youre cleared to cycle immediately, which means a much quicker process and a much better guarantee of reimbursement. Can I Change My Mind After I Have Consented

Yes. Before treatment can begin, there is a mandatory minimum two-week cooling off period after you have completed all the paperwork and your counselling sessions.

You can withdraw or change your consent at any time before insemination of the eggs. Insemination happens a few hours after the eggs have been collected from you.

Once insemination has occurred, you cannot change your mind and you do not have any legal rights or responsibilities with regard to any embryos created, over any pregnancies or over any children born as a result of your donation.

If you change your mind at any time, please let us know as soon as possible.

Common Compensation & Health Insurance Questions

Pros and cons of using donor eggs: is egg donation dangerous?

Will donating my eggs cost me anything?

NO. You should not have any out of pocket expenses as an egg donor. Your time, trouble, and commitment are compensated with you compensation check. If you have any expenses , you will usually be reimbursed.

What if a complication occurs? Do I have to have insurance?

Complications are rare and you will have a special insurance policy to cover you, should one arise. Keeping you safe is a priority for everyone. Every egg donor, once matched with a recipient couple, is covered by a special insurance policy that covers complications related to egg donation. In the rare case where there is a complication directly related to the egg donation process, that insurance policy will be your primary insurance and cover the costs of your care.

Additionally, the legal contract you sign with the parents-to-be indicates they are responsible for any medical bills that occur as a result of your role in the egg donation. That means they cover the costs of the monitoring visits, the medications, the testing, and the egg retrieval.

Do I have to pay taxes on the compensation I receive from egg donation?

You should discuss tax implications of that money with your tax specialist. Forward Fertility is not a resource for tax information. Forward Fertility believes the IRS views people receiving money as people who should pay taxes.

What Is An Id Option Donor

Our ID Option Donor Program gives egg donors the option to release their identity and contact information to the donor-conceived child when that child reaches the age of 18 and requests that information.

Heres how it works:

  • An egg donor may choose to be a Non-ID Option or elect for the ID Option.
  • If an egg donor chooses the ID Option, she agrees to allow us to release her identity and contact information only to the donor-conceived child, not the recipients of donor eggs, once that child reaches the age of 18 and requests the information.
  • The recipients of the donated eggs decide whether they want to choose a Non-ID Option or ID Option donor. Even if the recipients choose an ID Option donor, they may still choose to not opt into the ID Option program.
  • Once youve chosen to be an ID Option donor, you may not change your mind as this may be an important factor in the recipients donor selection.

Since The Screening Process Of Egg Donation Is So Intensive Only A Very Small Percentage Of People Whove Expressed An Interest In Donating Are Eligible To Donate

Rates vary from clinic to clinic, but this is due in part to the strict screening process. Levine says at his clinic only about 10% of people who do an initial screening make it to the second step. After that group is whittled down, usually only 10% of that second group makes it to the actual donation process. Levine says out of a hundred people who fill out a survey online, only one ends up becoming a viable egg donor. Purcell says at Shady Grove, they have around a 3-4% acceptance rate. Purcell notes that the majority of potential donors are washed out between the application process and the second stage. Sometimes women dont meet the age requirements for donation, sometimes they dont live locally enough , and BMI requirements are also responsible for a lot of drop outs.

There Are Three Main Ways Of Donating Your Eggs: Through An Agency Through A Clinic That Runs A Donor Service Or Doing A Directed Egg Donation

Agencies are basically headhunters and can pay more depending on the specifics of a donor. Compensation varies but Dr. Devine says, Appropriate compensation for eggs donors should be based on the local cost of living and should cover her lost wages, mileage, parking, and other expenses. For example, she explained that in the Washington DC area, compensation for donors ranges from $6,000 $8,000. Going through an agency, however, you can earn up to $25,000 for donation. You can also seek out an agency or clinic with a donor service on your own, without being headhunted by them. Theres also directed egg donation, which could be a donor donating eggs directly to a family member or friend, but without the process of the agency or clinic doing the matchmaking for them. Levine also adds that some families who have specific criteria, like wanting a donor who goes to Harvard, might put an ad in the Harvard newspaper and pay anywhere from $25,000-$50,000 for that directed donation.

What Is Bmi And Why Is It Important

BMI is a medically accepted and scientifically proven formula that is an indicator for medical risk. Medical evidence shows that people with a BMI under 18 or over 26 are at a higher risk for developing medical complications. Our donors health and safety are our primary concerns, which is why we only accept donors with a BMI between 18-26. We realize that there are many healthy individuals with BMI levels outside our requirements however, due to the volume of applications we receive were unable to evaluate every applicant on a case-by-case basis.
