Are There Other Things That Make You Ineligible For Blood Donation

Before you go to donate blood, you need to make sure that you are aware of any factors that may make you ineligible for donating blood. There are a couple of conditions that may mean you cannot donate any blood.

Tattoos are usually one reason why people may get turned away from giving blood, but you may also get turned away if you have a tattoo that you got within one year of trying to give blood.

This is because foreign materials can get into your blood and contaminate it when you get a piercing. In some cases, this may even mean that you get blood infections, for instance, HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

In some cases, it may actually be possible to donate blood if you have recently had a piercing though. Namely, if you went to a professional establishment that operates using single-use nail guns.

If this is the case then you should have no problem giving blood. If the gun is reusable then you will need to wait for 12 months before you try to donate blood or plasma again.

There are also other conditions that make it so you cant donate blood. Some examples include sickle cell disease hemophilia, jaundice, ebola, babesiosis, Chagas disease, and a number of others.

These conditions arent necessarily ones that you will get from having a tattoo, though it is slightly more likely that you will get these diseases and viruses after you have gotten a tattoo.

Can Plasma Centers Tell If You Got A Tattoo

Plasma centers cant tell if you have a tattoo and when you got it. However, if your tattoo is on a visible spot like your hand, arm, or neck and is fresh, the center might get to know that youve recently got a tattoo. Before donating blood or plasma, the center will run a few blood tests on you that usually help detect any possible virus such as hepatitis. These illnesses are common in people who get piercings and tattoos, especially if they have gone through a tattoo process using unsanitized tattooing instruments. Hepatitis can cause severe illness, and by donating blood while having a tattoo, youre putting the receiver at a huge risk.

Sometimes you can get away with a tattoo and donate blood without anyone ever knowing about this. However, this again is a big risk, as you may possibly put someones life in danger. Having a tattoo doesnt mean you cant donate blood ever. As a donor, you have to meet a few requirements if you have a tattoo to make you eligible to donate blood or plasma. You can find these out below.

Do People Lie About The Time It Has Been Since Getting A Tattoo

Yes, the possibility of providing wrong information about your tattoo to a donation center is high. But why would someone want to risk anyones life if the whole purpose of donating blood is to save them? In some cases, its stupid to lie about your tattoo, as blood and plasma centers conduct a few tests on you before you donate. So even if you lie, it wont work in your favor and save you the embarrassment. These tests reveal if you have a disease or infection that could harm the person receiving your blood.

Tattoos are one of the reasons for a blood infection, but thats not always the case. It happens only if the ink or equipment used is of poor quality and if your tattoo artist hasnt followed sanitization guidelines. When you get a tattoo on your body or get any part pierced, your immune system gradually starts to process slowly. Thus, you become more susceptible to catching different viruses and infections, especially blood-borne illnesses such as hepatitis.

    How Does Plasma Donation Work

Donating plasma is similar to giving blood. A trained staff member called a phlebotomist puts a sterile needle in your arm vein to draw blood. The blood is then cycled through single-use, sterile equipment that separates plasma from the other parts of your blood. Your plasma is then collected in a container, while the other parts of your blood are safely returned to your body. This process is called plasmapheresis.

Individuals with tattoos used to have to wait 12 months before donating blood to protect against the spread of disease caused by needles used at tattoo parlors.

In theory, you can now get inked up and have your blood drawn on the same day.

“If you recently received a tattoo as long as it was done within a certified California tattoo facility, which is most of them, then you’re able to come in and donate with no deferral time what so ever,” said Ersilia Lacaze.

Officials with the Central California Blood Center are hoping to welcome in a whole new group of blood donors with ink.

“Tattoos have become more and more acceptable so you have a lot of folks who enjoy having body art so we had a substantial population of people that we couldn’t access before,” Lacaze said. “So we’re very excited, and it’ll give a nice little bump in people who are able to come in.”

The timing to lift the deferral ban couldn’t come at a better time, the blood center typically sees a drop off in donations this time of year due to summer travel and other plans.

The FDA has also revised its policy on banning gay men from making blood donations.

    What Do They Test For

From age and weight up to medical history and medicine intake, there is a lot of information that must be screened for. Lets talk about age, weight, and blood type.

How old do you have to be to be eligible for plasma donation? Generally, donors must be at least 17 years of age. Younger individuals can also do it if given parental consent. You must also weigh at least 110 lbs or more. Male donors need to weigh around 110-118 lbs, depending on the height and age. Female donors have a wider weight requirement scale of 110-145 lbs.

All blood types are eligible for it. However, type AB is the ideal candidate because it is universal. It means that it can be administered to patients in need of plasma regardless of type. This is why the Red Cross Organization drives are called AB Elite Plasma Donation.

Next, you must pass two medical examinations. It includes medical history screening and tests for transmissible viruses. These tests will determine if youre healthy enough to donate. Theyll determine if its safe for recipients to receive your plasma by ensuring that you do not harbor transmissible diseases.
