Are There Companion Verses To ‘this Too Shall Pass’

Is This Too Shall Pass in the Bibleâ?

Though the phrase this too shall pass isnt listed in the Bible, there are several verses that closely resemble this term and could be interpreted as sharing the same sentiment.

Most notably is 2 Corinthians 4:17-18: For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

It can be seen that our light affliction, which is but for a moment, could easily be connected to this too shall pass in saying this issue we are dealing with now will soon be behind us. Many know the verse from 1 Corinthians 10:13, reminding believers that temptations will not overtake us because, God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

I would think the book of Proverbs wouldnt be too far behind in connection with this too shall pass, as there are countless reminders telling readers to trust God and His plan, knowing the difficult times will pass soon.

We Learn Greater Perseverance Strength And Endurance Through Suffering

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance,James 1:2-3.No one wishes for hard times in life. No one asks for suffering or storms. No one longs to wade through deep rivers of hurt, rejection, and pain, or to try to find your way out of the darkness of confusion and doubt. Yet if weve lived long enough, we know that this is all a part of life. Maybe thats why God reminds over and over in His word that trials are a part of our journey. Its what makes us stronger, gives us endurance, builds our faith.Throughout his word, God tells us to choose joy in whatever we face, confident that He is working even through every trial and hard place, to bring us greater perseverance. We never gain greater strength and spiritual muscles simply by living an easy life. We can only build deeper faith by walking through the hard times that press us more closely into His Presence. Every biblical hero through the pages of the Word were tested and strengthened, not through simple, easy times, but through great times of suffering and difficulty. This should give us hope even today, that God knows our way, and the testing of our faith will produce endurance. Its for far greater purposes than we may even realize.

A Little Sloganly Advice

This too shall pass tattoo

Where have I been? Good question, since I seem to be one of the only people living in an English-speaking country who did not know until recently about a ubiquitous cousin slogan of one of my favorite Hebrew sayings, gam zeh yaavor .

Apparently, gam zeh yaavor is so well known in popular culture that it has passed from being displayed as tattoos in the original Hebrew lettering among the hard core set

to appearing in English transliteration on t-shirts, ball caps, baby bibs, etc., etc. for those of us less inclined to make such a permanent statement.

Well, if This Too Shall Pass, then I guess it makes sense to just Keep Calm and Carry On, as we are instructed by the British slogan that has taken off like wildfire in the past few years. Like its cousin from traditional Jewish sources, this has become my mantra, with my repeating it over and over to myself multiple times daily. .

It must be the fact that I am originally from a Commonwealth country that attracts me to this slogan. Or maybe its simply that it is available in just about every color of the rainbow, so that I can choose whatever hue tickles my fancy on any given day.

Like gam zeh yaavor, KCACO appears on any and every type of merchandise an entrepreneur can imagine imprinting it with. And yes, you can also find some skin imprinted with it, too.

which, if I am going to be totally honest, is really more my kind of thing than KCACOs stiff-upper-lip-ness and gam zeh yaavors stoic fatalism.

Torah Scroll. What is said about tattoos in the Bible? Leviticus, the third book of the Hebrew Bible, prohibits them without giving an explicit reason. Why does the Bible prohibit tattoos?

What does the Bible say about tattoos?

Leviticus 19:28 says, You shall not make any gashes in your flesh for the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the LORD. Although this passage clearly prohibits tattoos, it does not give an explicit reason why. This begs the question: Why does the Bible prohibit tattoos?

In his Biblical Views column Unholy Ink: What Does the Bible Say about Tattoos? Mark W. Chavalas, Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, examines the taboo on tattoos in the Bible. Not only does he analyze traditional explanations for this prohibition, but he also investigates what tattoos signified to ancient Near Eastern peoples, including the ancient Israelites, which suggests the real reason why tattoos were taboo.

Leviticus 19 denounces idolatry and several pagan mourning practices. Some have thought that because of the proximity of the taboo on tattoos to the prohibition of other pagan mourning practices in Leviticus, tattooing must have been a pagan mourning practice. However, we find no evidence of this in ancient texts from the Levant, Mesopotamia or Egypt. As far as we can tell, tattooing was not an ancient mourning practice in these cultures.

Is The Phrase This Too Shall Pass A Biblical Concept

While the mantra is not from the Bible, nor should it be used in place of scriptural truth, it is not an entirely untrue statement. In the Book of Ecclesiastes, the writer – King Solomon, son of David – contemplates the state of man, and how the things of this world are temporal. The most famous of these meditations is found in the third chapter:

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted a time to kill, and a time to heal a time to break down, and a time to build up a time to weep, and a time to laugh a time to mourn, and a time to dance a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing a time to seek, and a time to lose a time to keep, and a time to cast away a time to tear, and a time to sew a time to keep silence, and a time to speak a time to love, and a time to hate a time for war, and a time for peace” .

While the idea of a current state passing away is not unbiblical in the strictest sense, since it does not state anything overtly contradictory to Gods Word, but as previously stated, the context and full meaning of the saying this too shall pass is not the same.

The storytells us how Salomon lost a chess game against Bandaiah, his wisest servant. Togive the page a lesson in humility, he ordered him to find a magic ring thatcould make sad men happy and happy men sad.

Bandaiah began his search, but the jewel didnt appear. Until one day, without any expectations, he arrived at a small goldsmith shop in the middle of the kingdom.

Talking to the goldsmith and entrust him every detail, the old man offered to create a ring with the words This too shall pass engraved on it.

With the jewel on his hands, the servant went to meet the King to show the finding. Salomon, the unbeliever from page success, was very surprised when he could contemplate the beautifully engraved piece.

Where Did The Phrase This Too Shall Pass Originate

This saying gained popularity in the west in the 19th century after being used by Edward Fitzgerald in his 1852 poem Solomons Seal. It was then paraphrased by Abraham Lincoln in a speech before his presidency. Once it entered the zeitgeist, over time, people began saying this too shall pass and attributing it to many varying sources of wisdom, but most especially the Bible.

But the phrase is far older than the 19th century, and the older an expression is, the more difficult it is to attribute it to the correct source. This phrase is most commonly attributed to the Middle East, generally Persia, Turkey, or Israel. The idea is also a theme in Sufi writings, mostly on wealth and temporary state of power and status.

Persian poet Suft Farid al-Din wrote a story about a wise king in the thirteenth-century who asked a group of wise men what will make him happy, and this too shall pass is the answer they devise.

It is not unusual for common sense pieces of wisdom to arise in different cultures. In the tenth century, an Anglo-Saxon poem invokes this piece of wisdom similar in nature to this too shall pass. Translated from the medieval language, the saying from Deors Lament approximates to, that passed away, this also may. In context, the saying is a refrain that comes after a series of verses that describe a tragic situation. The saying is an acceptance of the temporal nature of man. The saying accepts that tragedy comes and goes in human existence.
