After Inked Tattoo Aftercare Lotion

Tattoo aftercare tips from a dermatologist| Dr Dray

The best tattoo lotion Ive ever personally used is a vegan aftercare product called After Inked Tattoo Aftercare Lotion. This stuff works amazingly well during the healing process not only by keeping your tattoo really well hydrated but also by soothing any annoying itching and irritation. When using it from the very start of the healing process, this lotion will help to decrease tattoo healing times and work towards eliminating any lingering dryness and scabbing.

Why Is A& d Ointment A Good Product For Healing Tattoos

A& D Ointment contains both Vitamin A and D to treat abrasions and minor wounds simply and easily.

It also keeps the skin supple and naturally protects it from outside organisms and bacteria by sealing the area off with a thin layer of ointment.

A+D Ointment contains useful skin protectants lanolin and petrolatum to help with dry, chafed, and healing skin.

The products are fragrance free, phthalate free, and doesnt contain dyes or parabens. Essentially, if its recommended for a babys butt, it should be good for your healing skin.

A& D is also useful because it comes in a range of product sizes, so you can take it with you for every situation where you might need to apply it.

Help And Advice For Tattooed People

Here is some of my best advice, collected from my own experiences under the needle , from talking to other tattooed people and from being the Body Art editor at BellaOnline for 11 years. There are tips for all phases of tattooing , informational links, recommended products, and more.

The links listed just below are quick links to the various parts of this article, so you can either read the whole thing if you are just considering some ink, or you can jump to the section that you need if you’ve got some ink already. There’s also a spot at the end where you can ask questions. Please note, if the answer is in the article and you missed it, I’m just going to tell you to go back and read the appropriate section. It’s nothing personal and I’m not blowing you off, it just saves me typing the same stuff over and over.

Before You Get Tattooed

Vitamins A& D Ointment Skin Protectant 13oz Jar Tattoo ...

If you’re getting ready to go get your first tattoo, here are a few things you should know.

  • Since tattoos are a healing surface wound, you need to avoid hot tubs, swimming pools and soaking in bathtubs of water during the healing period. Before the surface heals, the skin is susceptible to infection and public pools and water are easy sources of bacteria.
  • Also, the soaking can cause the scab to come off too soon, which can also hurt your new tattoo. So don’t go get tattooed the day before that beach vacation or cruise! Make sure you get a good night’s sleep the night before your tattoo appointment and be sure to eat a good meal an hour or two ahead of time. The process of enduring being tattooed is more tiring than most people would imagine and it often stresses the body the same way vigorous activity does, even though you aren’t being highly active.
  • Do not drink alcohol or take aspirin before you get tattooed. Both of these thin the blood and can cause you to bleed heavily during the tattoo process.
  • Do not be drunk or high when you decide to get tattooed. More bad tattoos get born into the world from poor decisions than anything else.
  • If you are going to be tattooed for a long time, make sure you have a way of getting home that is safe, or have someone else drive you. Some people become disoriented or a bit fuzzy-headed after long tattoo sessions due to the endorphin rush.

Forget Nappy Rash Cream For Tattoo Aftercare Theres A New Breakthrough Product On The Market

If you google the phrase tattoo cream, the first product that comes up is a babys nappy rash cream.

Nobody seems to know why it works but tattoo artists up and down the country recommend this as the best aftercare product for freshly-inked tattoos.

I am writing today to suggest a more scientific alternative to you.

One of Science of Skins founders is Ardeshir Bayat, a clinician scientist, based at the University of Manchester, and for many years he has been studying how the body heals itself after an injury or wound.

During the course of his studies, he discovered an extract in green tea, which alters the bodys healing mechanisms and drastically improves the appearance of scars.

Besides scarring, the cream also helps with stretch marks, insect bites, sunburn, acne scars, chicken pox and accidental cuts and grazes.

It got the experts thinking, that the science behind the cream would also work as an aftercare product for new tattoos. After all a tattoo is technically a wound, of sorts.

The formulation of the cream speeds up the healing time and also reduces redness and itching.

According to most tattoo artists we have spoken to, itching is the biggest no, no when it comes to aftercare as it can remove the ink from the tattoo and lead to patches fading or disappearing altogether.

How does it work?

Solution for Scars is made with a particularly active green tea extract that is scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of scarring.

Also, don’t apply too much lotion, just enough to cleanse your skin. Most healing takes two weeks, although the tattoo can take up to four weeks to heal.

The Evolution Of Ointment For Tattoo Care

Petroleum jelly was once the most widely used tattoo aftercare product. It’s highly available, inexpensive, and just plain gets the job done. However, modern artists advise against using petroleum-based products because not only do they drain the color from a tattoo, but also their non-porous makeup may prevent air from reaching the wound and allowing it to heal.

Then along came the over-the-counter triple antibiotic ointment, Neosporin . It contains healing ingredients that fight infection and it doesn’t alter the tattoo’s color like the petroleum jelly alternative. But after a few years of recommended use, people complained of allergic reactions that resulted in tiny red bumps on the infected area. Once the red bumps disappeared, along with them, they took the tattoo’s ink, leaving the customer with a spotted design.

Next came Bacitracin for its promising advantages over Neosporin. Fewer people reacted to this product and the coloring results remained beautiful. Even to this day, Bacitracin is one of the most highly recommended productsyet it has its failings. Customers still report allergic reactions to this ointment , and Bacitracin may also result in what artists call a “weeping tattoo”a tattoo that leaks a small amount of ink from the wound, even after several days of healing.

So it appears that some people don’t jive with antibacterial ointments.

Raye from Seattle, WA on August 24, 2016:

Frank, a person who can’t actually see your tattoo can only make random guesses. Is it extra ink on the skin? Did the artist screw up? I have no idea, I can’t see what you are talking about. You need to consult someone who can look at your arm, like another tattoo artist, in person.

Frank Robinson Jr. on June 12, 2016:

I got a tattoo yesterday and got the bandage on for 24 hours. It said if there was excessive leakage, I could remove, which I did today. Some of the fine lines look to be a little blurry. Is that normal? My NEW normal? Weeep.

Tattoos And Coconut Oil: A Love Story

Looking for an affordable, natural way to keep your tattoo protected? Look no further than your kitchen. Coconut oil is a super popular tattoo aftercare product.

The oil is a natural analgesic and has anti-inflammatory and fever-reducing properties, so it makes sense to use it on your newly inked skin. Make sure you choose virgin coconut oil, which is solid at room temp, over refined versions that are liquid.

So you did everything right, but your new tattoo just isnt healing. When should you talk to your tattoo artist or doctor? Heres a rundown of three common but unpleasant side effects.

Is Aquaphor Good Or Safe For Tattoos

Some people think Aquaphor is exactly the same as Vaseline petroleum jelly. But thats not the case. Vaseline does have its uses, but its made with 100% petrolatum which doesnt allow the skin to breathe at all.

Aquaphor, on the other hand, is only 41% petrolatum. Apparently, this is just the right amount to let oxygen in the skin and still block harmful pathogens from infecting your tattoo. Additionally, Aquaphor contains lanolin alcohol, panthenol and glycerine. These ingredients work to moisturise and nourish the skin.

This ointment is like a two-pronged swordthat protects the outside of the skin and heals the inside. So, to answer thequestion, yes, Aquaphor is safe for use on new tattoos.

Heres a neat graphic from Aquaphorswebsite to illustrate how this multi-purpose ointment works to heal your newtattoo:

How Does A& d Ointment Help Tattoos

4 Pack Dynarex Vitamin A& D Ointment 15 oz. Jar

The main goal in every tattoo aftercare plan should be to keep the tattooed area moisturized. Dryness is the last thing you want after getting a new tattoo, as it delays the healing process, causes excessive scabbing, itchiness and irritation, not to mention dull-looking skin.

Lanolin and Petrolatum are two of the main active ingredients found in A& D ointment. These ingredients primary responsibility is to moisturize by producing oil on the skins outer layer, allowing the skin to capture and retain water.

A& D ointment also contains Vitamin A and D, each offering healing benefits. Vitamin A encourages the formulation of new blood vessels and prevents infection, while Vitamin D is a natural anti-inflammatory with antimicrobial properties.

Overall, the moisturizing ingredients in A& D ointment can help reduce the amount of scabbing that occurs. Fewer scabs lead to less itching or scratching of the area, saving the tattoo wound from reopening and reducing your healing time. There are mixed opinions about using A& D ointment for tattoos. Listed below are a few benefits and drawbacks to incorporating this product into your aftercare routine.

Pros

  • Can clog pores when applied too thick or if used too frequently
  • Not designed specifically for tattooed skin
  • Lanolin is known to cause allergic reactions in some people
  • Lacks antibacterial properties
  • Can potentially fade some tattoos
  • The oil within the product can extract some of the tattoos ink
