Drink about 6 to 8 cups of water the day before and day of donating, and eat a protein- and iron-rich meal within 3 hours of donation.

High-protein foods include beans and legumes, beef, chicken, shrimp, cheese, eggs, milk, yogurt , and seeds and nuts. Broccoli, beef, beans, iron-enriched breakfast cereals, chicken, ham, dark leafy greens, raisins, and watermelon are all high in iron.

Lifeblood predicts the changes will see 17,000 extra donors now able to roll up their sleeves and donate plasma, boosting stocks by 50,000 donations a year.

âWeâve got around 100 Tamworth locals who have been prevented from donating blood or plasma due to having tattoos one in seven Australians have been tattooed,â Ms Dietrich said.

âYou can donate plasma more often, you can come in every two weeks if you have time and are healthy and well, so weâd love to see more people come in centre: new, return, inked.â

Ms Dietrich said the plasma donations helped people with autoimmune diseases, cancer, haemophilia, kidney diseases and burns.

âIt makes a lot of different products for a lot of sick people,â she said.

Organ And/or Tissue Transplant

Recent organ or tissue transplants would disqualify you from being a donor. You have to wait for 3 months after the operation before becoming eligible.

In the case of dura mater or brain covering transplant, this results in permanent disqualification from being a blood or plasma donor. This is because of the possibility of CJD or other TSE transmission.

Other Infectious Diseases Parasitic And Bacterial

It varies depending on the type of disease or recovery period of the individual:

• Chagas Disease Not eligible, past or current infection
• Leishmaniasis Not eligible, past or current infection
• Babesiosis Only eligible once the infection has passed, at least 2 years after the last positive test.
• Malaria Only eligible 3 years after the treatment is done. If youve traveled within the past 3 years to countries where malaria is prevalent, you are not allowed to proceed. You have to wait 3-6 years before you can give again.
• Tuberculosis Individuals with active tuberculosis or are undergoing treatment for it cannot donate. Once treatment is done and successful and you do not have active TB, you can apply again for donor eligibility.
