Treatment After Laser Tattoo Removal

How Long Does It Take For A Tattoo Removal To Heal

How to Care for Skin After Laser Tattoo Removal | Body Details

The total healing time after laser treatment is about 4 to 8 weeks. But, what you do during those weeks can increase or decrease the healing process.

Healing times vary depending on the type of treatment, the strength of your immune system, and how closely you follow your aftercare plan.

Your post treatment efforts are as important a part of the process as the laser itself.

Just by staying hydrated and keeping your immune system healthy, for example, you can speed up the process by several weeks.

And by protecting your wound, youll avoid opening the scab, which helps it heal without interruption.

What Are Some Side Effects Of Tattoo Removal

The three main types of adverse reactions are redness, swelling, and blisters. Lets explain what causes each of them, what it looks like, and whether there is cause for concern.

Redness

After a treatment, youll see redness, formally called purpura, in the area treated by laser removal. It lasts for a week to two weeks at most. The redness is caused by capillaries leaking into the skin, which helps with the bodys immune response triggered by the removal session. This should not cause alarm, as the increased blood flow helps to flush out the affected ink.

Swelling

Most clients experience swelling directly after the removal session and throughout part or all of the first week after treatment. This should not cause concern. However, if you have any questions about your bodys response to the treatment, you can always call your technician. In nearly all cases, the specialist simply puts the clients mind at ease, assuring them that the swelling is totally normal.

Blisters

Every so often, Removery clients experience blistering during tattoo removal healing. Removery can help them drain anything larger than the size of a dime.

Infection is rare, but you should know the signs to look for just in case. Tattoo removal infection signs include a rash, chills, and discharge from the treated area. Tell your removal technician if you experience any of these symptoms.

How The Laser Affects The Surrounding Tissue

Laser technicians are highly skilled at using the appropriate wavelengths to target only the tattoo ink. When treated by a skilled technician at a reputable facility, you wont have to worry about damage to the surrounding tissue. In the process used, called selective photothermolysis, the lasers energy is attracted only to the ink particles rather than the surrounding tissue.

Tips For Laser Tattoo Removal Aftercare

The best thing you can do is to do nothing.

Really.

Rest and relaxation are on top of the list of laser tattoo removal aftercare best practices. Just as your body needs to time to re-build muscle fibre after hitting a hard workout at the gym, it needs plenty of time to recuperate and rebuild healthy skin.

You dont have to stay in bed all week, but do your best to avoid any strenuous physical activities like working out or playing sports for 24 hours immediately following your laser tattoo removal treatments. Depending on the size of the tattoo, you may want to consider taking a break from physical activity for longer. The more energy you leave your body to recover after a tattoo removal session, the more youll have available to help it heal.

Smaller tattoos need less downtime because the affected area is smaller. This means your body doesnt need to work as hard as when trying to heal a larger tattoo. This doesnt mean you get a free pass though. You should still rest in between treatments.

How Long Does Laser Tattoo Removal Recovery Take

What To Expect After Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal doesnt come cheap. But its a dependable solution if you want to make certain that you erase a bad decision inked on your skin. If youre already considering this treatment, concerns are usually focused on what will come out of the treatment.

To help you make an informed decision and finally get on board, heres what you can expect after a laser treatment.

Newer Treatments And Future

Today, there are already promising studies and ongoing usage of the next generation of QS lasers, using pulses in the range of picoseconds, which are reported to create even better results in clearing a tattoo. This is attributed to the shortening of the pulse, matching the thermal relaxation time of the tattoo ink better and generating more effective photo-acoustic waves . However, these new machines are currently very costly, and it is too early to tell if they are worthwhile for their improved capacity for clearing tattoo ink. Hence, more studies are needed.

Newer techniques are combinations of already-known modalities, such as pretreating the skin with a fractional CO2 laser or an Erbium:YAG laser and then directly treating the tattoo with a QS laser . Another combination is the fractional QS laser with a QS laser with a full beam . Furthermore, in order to lessen the degree of scattering and to increase the penetration of light, it is possible to use diascopy during the QS laser session. In our experience, this seems to lead to a better effect of clearing deeper pigment. There are also reports on transdermal application of glycerol for the same effect .

What Else Can I Expect Within The First Few Days

Your treated skin will evidently be the most tender the first few days after receiving your procedure of laser tattoo removal in NYC. Your practitioner will have placed a bandage over the treated area, and it is important to not fuss with this as it can irritate the treated skin.

You will want to wait until day 2 or at least 24 hours after you have undergone the procedure before showering or soaking your skin. When you do shower, try to keep the treated skin out of the direct stream of water.

Following the first day of keeping the bandage secured on your skin, you will want to keep the skin uncovered as much as possible during the second day. This will allow the healing area to breathe. Do try to keep the treated area clean to the best of your ability.

Blisters may develop on the treated area between one and three days following your procedure. This is normal. However, do not pick or otherwise irritate these blisters, as they will drain and dry into scabs on their own. Avoiding unnecessary contact with the scabs is recommended as well in order to avoid irritating the skin. These scabs commonly fall off between 10 14 days after your treatment.

Aftercare For Your Tattoo Is Just As Important As The Laser Treatment

After being zapped with the laser repeatedly patients are ready to leave the office without a second thought. Who can remember the aftercare instructions when you feel like the area treated is on fire.

It’s normal for the area to feel and look like a superficial wound. There may be “frosting,” immediate whitening of the area, swelling, redness, bruising, blistering, and or scabbing. These are all common side effects.

For best results after your laser treatment here are some guidelines:

  • Your skin will feel warm or uncomfortable in the treated area. You may apply cool compresses as necessary for up to 24 hours after treatment to reduce discomfort and inflammation. You can take regular Tylenol, but do not take Advil or aspirin.
  • Keep the treated area clean and protected with sterile gauze and or bandage with a thin layer of antibiotic or healing ointment for the first 2-3 days. We recommend Aquaphor. You may shower after treatment, but avoid high water pressure hitting the area or soaking the area for long periods of time.
  • After the 3 days, keep the area clean and dry during the healing process. Continue to apply a thin layer of Aquaphor.
  • Pinpoint or large blisters are common after treatment. Redness around the area is also normal and part of the healing process. If blisters are present, protect the area with non-stick dressing and change daily until healed and dry. Apply ointment for up to 24 hours after blisters have popped.

How Do You Care For A Tattoo Before & After A Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment

MY LASER TATTOO REMOVAL EXPERIENCE (After 8 treatments)

Laser tattoo removal is a commitment. Unlike getting a tattoo it typically isnt done and over with in only one treatment session. At Original You, most tattoos take about seven treatments, we do offer PFD Patches for anyone looking to remove their ink in the fewest number of treatments possible.

How you take care of your tattoo before and after a laser tattoo removal treatment will also have an impact on how it fades.

    The Before care:

    • Avoid tanning in the area being treated at least 2 weeks prior to treatment. Four weeks is ideal, but in Vegas we all know how hard it can be to avoid the sun sometimes. This includes self-tanners or sunless tanning products as well. The increase of pigment in the area of the tattoo can greatly decrease the laser treatments effectiveness and increase your risk of complications.
    • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluid the day of your appointment.
    • Ensure the area to be treated is clean at the time of your appointment, do not use any lotion, makeup or sunscreen. If you have any of these on, you will need to thoroughly wash the tattoo being treated prior to treatment.
    • Accutane of any other photosensitizing medication should be discontinued for at least 6 months prior to any treatment and should not be started while you are having your tattoo removed. We can always take a break from your tattoo removal treatments if need be.
    • You may not receive laser tattoo removal if you are pregnant or nursing.
