You Can Be Free Of A Design You No Longer Like
Our tastes change over time. If a tattoo you once enjoyed no longer pleases you, thats totally normal. Many people get tattoos to reflect certain relationships, religious beliefs, or group affiliations. If these aspects of your life change, you might not want to keep the tattoo. Laser treatments can help you get your appearance to align with your current sense of self. As a result, they can make you feel happier and more confident.
What Happens After First Session Of Tattoo Removal
While you can mostly go back to normal life after laser treatments, there are a few side effects to keep an eye on, and it may be best to lay low after your session if possible. After your first laser treatment, the area will get red and have some swelling. There might be a tingly sunburn sensation for 30-45 minutes post-treatment, and blistering is the most severe of side effects, which typically pops up within 24 hours of your first session.
Blisters are more common after the first 1-3 rounds of treatment which is why our Certified Licensed Laser Technicians will walk you through the steps of proper aftercare. With blistering, aftercare is extremely important and can impact your recovery and the success of erasing your ink.
We also want our clients to understand that getting blisters or not does not mean the treatment was any better or worse its just the way the individual responds. So it is totally possible to have a safe and successful tattoo removal with little to no blistering.

Laser Tattoo Removal Aftercare Instructions
After treatment, your treated area may seem like a superficial burn wound. Many patients experience immediate whitening of the area, plus bruising, swelling, blistering, and scabbing. Here are some basic guidelines to handling these side effects and achieving excellent laser tattoo removal results:
Basic Reminders For Tattoo Removal Aftercare
- Use sunscreen to protect the treated skin which is particularly sensitive to sunlight following treatment.
- Dont apply makeup or any potentially irritating product on treated skin while it heals.
- Avoid shaving treated areas unless the skin is healed.
- Dont soak in baths, hot tubs or pools unless the skin has healed completely.
While some effects of the treatment are expected reactions from the laser, some rely on external factors. The laser used, your health in general, the type of tattoo you have, and the quality of aftercare measures can affect the results you get. Therefore, you need a service provider who can individualise your treatment process.

What Is The Experience Like
A topical anesthetic is applied to ensure patient comfort. Patients describe the treatment as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. The length of the treatment varies by the size of the tattoos and the amount of work desired. Some sessions can take just a few minutes others up to an hour.
What Will Happen After Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment
For the first half-hour after laser tattoo removal treatment the tattoo looks pale or white, and may swell slightly. The tattoo may feel hot for a while after laser treatment, and it will probably be red and swollen for the rest of the day. There may be pinpoint bleeding for a few hours in areas where there was a lot of pigment. Dr. White will write a prescription for an effective nonsensitizing antibiotic ointment to aid in healing and prevent scarring, and pain medication so you won’t have to worry about post-op pain. At Carolina Laser, your comfort is important to us.
Your tattoo usually fades over 4-6 weeks. The degree of fading will be easier to see when you compare your tattoo with pre-treatment photographs.

It Hurts But It’s Bearable
When discussing pain with patients, it’s important to share that while they may experience some level of discomfort, the pain is relatively manageable and tolerable. It may take some tough love to encourage patients concerned about sensitivity.
The vast majority of tattoo removal providers offer some form of soothing to the skin during the treatment. Offering skin numbing during the procedure allows your practice to stay competitive, provide better patient care, and have higher patient satisfaction.
How Long After Laser Tattoo Removal Will My Tattoo Fade
Laser tattoo removal is a specialized procedure that utilizes quick pulsing energy to target tattoo pigments and triggers the skin to release these pigments. Upon release, the skin naturally reabsorbs these pigments and disposes of them. Because the treatment targets the pigments and not surrounding skin, it can produce astounding results without scarring. In fact, most patients only experience a few hours of pink, sensitive skin after treatment.

Volume And Position Of The Ink
Professional tattoo artists are able to penetrate the epidermis and place the ink in the dermis while an amateur may not be able to do it. Thus professional tattoos take more time as there is more ink in the deeper layers of the skin.
You must be patient and do not think that the laser will be able to disappear the ink overnight. It will take time, and you will have to wait for it to happen.
Prepare For Your Tattoo After Care In Advance
You’ll need things like Aquaphor, bandages, and even clothes that don’t rest on your tattoo. Yes, I actually bought shirts that didn’t have material where my neck/back tattoo is. At first, I was cutting tags out, but when tagless cotton tees still made the spot hurt and itch, I figured keyhole backs were a good investment. If you have tattoos on your ribs or feet it might be best to plan your sessions accordingly.
It also helps to apply a thin coating of antibiotic ointment or healing moisturizer three times a day, like from Aquaphor or Kiehl’s, for the first three days of the healing process.

How Long Is The Tattoo Removal Healing Process Before You Can Book Your Next Treatment Session
Most patients require six to eight weeks between laser tattoo removal sessions.
This is because the bodys immune system needs sufficient time to do its job.
During your treatment session, the laser technology pulses light energy into your skin to cause the ink particles to explode. Your bodys immune system sends white blood cells to collect the excess ink particles and remove them for excretion.
Tattoo ink particles are too large for the white blood cells to pick up, and thats why we use laser therapy to break them down into smaller and smaller particles. Every session breaks them down even more until the immune system has got rid of every last one.
This process occurs every time you undergo treatment, so the body needs adequate time to recover each time.
Having treatments too close together can encourage the body to adapt and make treatment less effective.
There are many factors that come into play as to how long your laser tattoo removal process will take before complete removal.
You can speed up the tattoo removal healing process by eating a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, keeping hydrated with lots of water, avoid sun exposure directly on the treatment site, and avoid smoking.
Avoid Excessive Alcohol Consumption
Heavy consumption of alcohol will hinder and slow down the results.
Too much alcohol will dehydrate your body and compromise your immune system.
What? But I enjoy a beer or two a day!
1-2 drinks a day shouldnt have any negative effects on your results. This factor applies to clients who drink moderately high, to heavy amounts of alcohol on a regular basis.

Laser Treatments Need Time To Work With Your Body
Getting laser treatments is the safest and most complete way to get rid of your tattoo. With each session, the wavelengths blast some of the ink particles into fragments that are small enough for the macrophages to eliminate. Your body needs some time after every session to go through its clearing processes. By continuing your sessions, you will ultimately see your tattoo fade away.
Avoid Catching A Cold During Cold Season
Getting sick with the cold or flu can halt your bodys ability to remove the ink pretty dramatically.
If you catch a cold, or worse the flu in the middle of your treatment plan, we cant even treat you until you get well. It would be for your own good, because your immune system will be too busy fighting off the virus.
Eat vitamin c rich foods like oranges on a daily basis, during cold season.

How Long To Keep Tattoo Covered After Laser Removal
Tattoo ink is put underneath the leading layer of the skin. That makes tattoo removal a lot more complicated– and costly– than the original tattoo application.
If you have an interest in tattoo removal, speak with a skin medical professional about the alternatives. Do not try tattoo removal by yourself. Do-it-yourself tattoo removal lotions and other residence treatments aren’t likely to be effective and can trigger skin irritability or other responses. Dry Skin And Scabbing
Dry skin and scabbing arrive in the aftermath of the blisters subsiding. One thing to note here is that dry skin scabbing and flaky skin can darken the area around the removal site. Patients shouldnt be alarmed by this, the darkness does not mean the removal isnt working properly, it is just another part of the healing process.
The best thing for you to do during this process is to be patient and take care of the area. Any attempt on your part to speed this process will probably do more harm than good.

Understanding Laser Tattoo Removal
Before we discuss the aftereffects of laser tattoo removal, it is important to first understand how laser tattoo removal works. Every individuals laser tattoo removal process is unique and the length of treatment and number of sessions will depend on the depth of pigment, tattoo color and size of the tattoo. To produce the best results, it is important to allow the skin time to heal between treatments and to allow the bodys immune system to reabsorb and dispose of the tattoo inks. Most practitioners recommend about six to eight weeks between laser sessions, depending on skin tone.

Dont Pick At Scabs Or Pop Blisters
Scabs and blisters are just what to expect after laser tattoo removal. It means that your skin is healing.
Avoid popping the blisters or picking at the scabs. It can cause a bad infection and put a halt on healing. On top of avoiding scratching, you also shouldnt shave the area if there are blisters.
The sharp razor may open the wound without you realizing it. Let the blisters drain on their own time.
Number Of Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment Sessions Needed
The number of treatments necessary to remove a tattoo via laser can be predicted by the Kirby-Desai Scale. The number of sessions depends on various parameters, including the area of the body treated, skin color, ink color present, scarring, and amount of ink present. Effectiveness of the immune system may play a role as well.
Complete laser tattoo removal requires numerous treatment sessions, typically spaced at eight weeks or more apart. Treating more frequently than eight weeks increases the risk of adverse effects and does not necessarily increase the rate of ink absorption. Anecdotal reports of treatments sessions at four weeks leads to more scarring and dischromia and can be a source of liability for clinicians. At each session, some but not all of the tattoo pigment particles are effectively fragmented, and the body removes the smallest fragments over the course of several weeks or months. The result is that the tattoo is lightened over time. Remaining large particles of tattoo pigment are then targeted at subsequent treatment sessions, causing further lightening. Tattoos located on the extremities, such as the ankle, generally take longest. As tattoos fade clinicians may recommend that patients wait many months between treatments to facilitate ink resolution and minimize unwanted side effects.
