My Experience with Maybelline Color Tattoo On and On Bronze:

Maybelline launched 7 shades of Color Tattoo in UK few months ago and the shade that I got is the On & On Bronze which is a metallic finish brown shade with lots of shimmer in it and it shines through amazingly in the sun. The shimmer is not very heavy and it is a very wearable shade.

While honeymooning in London, our hotel was right opposite the local Boots store . . Now, more often than not, i was entering Boots in a sleepy state, in my sponge bob square pants pyjamas to get a bottle of water or toothpaste or something like that and i just kept attracting a million eyes staring at me the whole time. Maybe people in london dont wear pyjamas out on the road i thought . Finally when two people came up to me and asked me Ooh is that a tattooo??? i realised- oh THATS what they are all looking at ! The Mehendi!!! While i explained to them , that no it was not a tattoo and we had a discussion on the differences in tattoo and henna, my eyes wandered to something else that was called a tattoo- the much raved about Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadows. Add to the fact that there was a 3 for the price of 2 offer going on at Boots, i knew that my little toothpaste package would get a teeny bit heavier!

Maybelline Dare to Go Nude Color Tattoo Eyeshadow

For spring, Maybelline released six limited edition shades of Color Tattoos in its Dare to Go Nude Collection. Ive been trying to find these for a few weeks now, and by some miracle, I was able to find five of the shades. Unfortunately, I dont have Stroke of Midnight . Most of the stores Ive visited havent even had displayers , but a CVS about ten miles away did have a display that was only partially ravaged . Its a real shame that these arent permanent, because they would be welcomed additions to the permanent range. Though in some ways, they might seem boring to some, theyre very core, basic shades. They reminded me a lot of Benefits Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow range in color selection as well as feel and finishthese all felt a little thinner than the original formula, a smidgen more emollient, but they applied and wore as well as the original shades do. As always, Im not keen on actually wearing makeup for 24-hours, so I didnt test any of these for a full 24-hours, but I tested all five for sixteen hours.

These are LIMITED EDITION as confirmed by Maybelline on March 4th, 2014. Maybelline corporate confirmed that all shades released in the Dare to Go Nude Collection are limited edition with none slated to be added to the permanent range at this time.

Maybelline Groundbreaker 24hr Color Tattoo

I have to start this review by pointing out something strange. The shade is called Groundbreaker according to the sticker on the black lid, however on the bottom of the glass jar, theres a clear sticker with Groundbraker.

Youd think a massive, massive company like Maybelline would check for typos before launching a product across the world. Typos are easily made, but it just amuses me that a brand as big as Maybelline would make such an obvious mistake.

The Maybelline Groundbreaker 24hr Color Tattoo is £5.99, and Groundbreaker is just one of the five newer shades alongside Socialite, Front Runner, Dusk Doll, Knockout and Risk Maker. The photos on the Superdrug website are wrong, as it shows this shade as being a pretty pinky nude shade which is what I thought I was getting, but as you can see Groundbreaker is definitely not pink.

I have to say, Im a little disappointed with the new shades. Dusk Doll is very sheer, and Groundbreaker is also very sheer. The Color Tattoos used to be known for being super pigmented, metallic eyeshadows which were comparable to the MAC Paint Pots.

Aesthetic Appeal And Je Ne Sais Quoi

L’Oreal’s Practical Aesthetics:

L’Oreal’s Infallible eyeshadow is a more traditionally versatile, every-day wearable, and user-friendly product. It’s a cheap way to wear expensive eyeshadow. Infallible is a “dupe” for expensive eyeshadows with a luxurious formula and a variety of colors, many of which look very similar to popular Urban Decay shades.

L’Oreal’s shades are truly beautiful, particularly the metallic shades, which are quite stunning when they catch the light. However, in a head to head comparison, they are somewhat more subtle than Maybelline’s cream product.

Maybelline’s Je Ne Sais Quoi Factor:

Maybelline’s Color Tattoo eye makeup is a bit less versatile and user-friendly, but it does feel unique. You won’t find anything else in the drugstore that is remotely like it. The colors, particularly the metallics, are incredibly vibrant, and with a little bit of practice working with the product, you may come to truly love it. Consider yourself an artist working in a new medium. You may not be completely adept with it the first time you pick up the brush, but it’s worth giving it a try. After all, isn’t it fun to play with paint?

Both L’oreal’s Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow and Maybelline’s Eye Studio Color Tattoo eyeshadows are marketed as intensely vibrant, super-saturated eye colors that deliver 24-hour long-lasting hold.

For drugstore brands, these are certainly lofty claims. After all, pigmentation is generally hit or miss when it comes to drugstore eyeshadows, and obtaining long-wearing coverage doubly so. However, these two eyeshadow lines bear more than a passing resemblance to high end cosmetics.

Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows are a cream/gel eyeshadow thats supposed to yield 24-hour wear without creasing or fading and have intense color payoff. There are currently ten shades in total, with five being reviewed in this post.

I tested several shades from the range for twelve to sixteen hours. I wore each of them alone, not with other products, primers, or eyeshadows. I didnt experience any budging, creasing, fading, or smudging. The shades I specifically tested were: Audacious Asphalt, Bad to the Bronze, Edgy Emerald, Fierce & Tangy, Painted Purple, and Tough as Taupe. These can also be used as an eyeshadow base or as an eyeliner, depending on what youre looking for. I tried these as bases and liners, and they worked and performed well. Its always nice when a cream eyeshadow can double as a cream eyeliner!

I didnt test these for a full 24-hours, because I am really, really loathe to wear makeup for that long. Adverse reactions can be a job hazard from product tester, and the last time I did that kind of test, my eyes paid for it for another few days , so Im not keen on doing it again I apologize in advance. I think that a product that wears as long as sixteen hours without any issues is likely to continue in the same vein.

How Do You Keep Cream Eyeshadow From Drying Out

Use A Skincare Oil

Use the conditioning power of argan oil as a force for good the oils skin-softening benefits work just as well on stiffened cream products. According to Shten, if youve got an oil you use as part of your skin care routine, a few drops will help revive the product but be sure to mix it well.

Other Issues To Consider

Another issue to consider with cream eyeshadows is that, over time, they do dry out.

I have owned Color Tattoo eyeshadows for a number of years and have not had any problems with the product drying up, so I suspect that keeping the container tightly capped may be key.

When cream eyeshadow does dry out, it’s not forever ruined you can still revitalize it. Invest in a spray to revitalize cream eyeshadows, such as MAC’s Fix+, or e.l.f.’s Makeup Mist & Set, which does the same thing at a fraction of the cost.

More Than Cream: Maybelline Goes Metallic With Barely Branded

Maybelline Barely Branded Color Tattoo Metal Eyeshadow is a warm, creamy beige with a frosted, metallic finish. MAC Dazzlelight is whiter, less yellow/warm. MAC Brule reminded me of it, just matte and powder. Tarina Tarantino Fantastical was the closest in colorfairly closebut is a powder product. I think MAC Bare Study is whiter, less warm-toned.

I see this shade being very versatile and easily becoming a go-to eyeshadow base for a good portion of people. The shimmer when it sheers out is nice, and what I liked more about it was that it sheered out evenly so it could be easily used as a wash of color for when youre pressed for time. The best news of all, of course, is that it did in fact wear for a full twelve hours without creasing or fading when I tested it. It had a nice creamy consistency that made for quick and easy application, and it built up color wellId say use less for sheer color, because it is was nicely pigmented. I was able to get opaque color in one layer using a flat, firm brush . I picked it up at my local Walgreens, but it IS available online NOW! at ULTA. Ive had this for quite a little while now and its definitely time for a review! I actually wish I would have posted about this sooner because its definitely one of my top five eyeshadows. After hearing everyone rave about how awesome the Maybelline Color Tattoos were I ran out and grabbed a few. Im big on neutrals so of course I had to get Bad to the Bronze!

I really like the packaging of these. They come in small glass jars with the brand and product name on the bottom and a black screw top. Its not super small but I dont find them to be excessively bulky either. The packaging is very simple but it works for me. Very chic, Maybelline!

The color is a bit weird to me but I definitely still like it! In the jar it comes off more on the taupe side but when applied it appears more bronze. It does have a bit of shimmer but not too much. If you want a subtle wash of color with a hint of shimmer this it! And its great for those wanting a super haute metallic look too! All you have to do is build it up a bit. I love how versatile it is!

The quality of this cream shadow is simply amazing to me! Its very long lasting, pigmented and pretty versatile. I also find it pretty affordable at just $7. Plus you can always find a nice sale at Walgreens and CVS. Heres my final thoughts:

However, there are a few exceptions. For instance, although I have never personally experienced a problem with Painted Purple, many Maybelline customers report that this shade does not perform as well for them as others do in the basic line. Additionally, it seems that Maybelline’s formula seems to vary somewhat across its sub-lines. A few of the shades in its Leather sub-line, for instance, apply more patchily than the standard formula. While customers seem to have few complaints about L’Oreal’s permanent Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow line, the quality becomes somewhat questionable when it comes to their limited edition colors, which tend to be a bit hit and miss when it comes to pigmentation and can apply somewhat streakily.
