Tattoos In The Bible New Testament

So Should Christians Get Tattoos

What Does The Bible Say About Tattoos?

Are tattoos sinful? Is getting a tattoo a sin? No, getting a tattoos is not a sin. But that doesnt make it a black and white issue. It means its up to each person to decide how they can best live out their faith in the grey.

There are some that dont like tattoos, and thats okay. Others feel that a tattoo would hinder their relationship with God or hurt their witness, thats fine for them to feel that and avoid them. Its a grey area. If you think tattoos arent wise, then dont get one.

However dont force your preference on those around you. Creating rules that arent in the Bible is a dangerous practice. And if you think its okay to get tattoos, dont force your personal freedom on those who think its not okay. Choose grace in the grey.

If you are struggling through how to navigate the grey of getting a tattoo or not, let me end by offering you two questions.

Heres two questions to help you discern not just getting a tattoo, but all grey areas of life:

  • Whats the wisest and most loving thing for me to do?
  • How will this affect those around me?
  • A hard lesson for us to learn is that while I may have the freedom to do something, it still has a consequence. I may lose influence because of the choices I make. On some level you cannot help it. If you choose to get a tattoo some will discredit you. But on the other hand if you choose to get a tattoo you could actually gain credibility with some.

What The Bible Says About Tattoos

Unfortunately, there isnt much in the Bible about tattoos specifically. Tattooing is not mentioned in the New Testament. However, branding and cutting the skin is named in the Old Testament.

Leviticus 19:28 says, Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord. This seems pretty direct.

It is important, however, to keep in mind that it is in the same chapter with several Levitical laws, including, Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.

Many of these laws were put in place to either protect the Israelites or to keep Gods people different.

In the case of tattoos and cutting their bodies, this was a way to distinguish them from other nations surrounding them.

Got Questions explains, The reason for the prohibition of tattoos in this passage is not stated, but it is likely that tattooing was a pagan practice connected with idolatry and superstition. It was probably common for the pagans to mark their skin with the name of a false god or with a symbol honoring some idol. God demanded that His children be different, and He reminded them in the same verse, I am the LORD.

With that being said, getting a tattoo is a heart matter.

According to the Bible, getting a tattoo may not be a sin for this generation, but there are other ways to determine if the reasons you are getting a tattoo may be sinful.

Here are some questions to ask yourself if you are a Christian considering a tattoo.

Why Should You Never Get A Tattoo

Many people get tattoos who dont really think about the ramifications of their actions before deciding.

Other reasons not to get a tattoo besides the warnings in the Bible verses concerning tattoos will be briefly discussed with Bible passages to support each one.

    i. Do you really know your Tattoo artist?

You have no idea how the tattoo artists health is affected by sharp body piercing tools. A few artists may infect you with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B and C. It is best to play it safe by not getting tattooed.

ii. Tattoos can be expensive, time-consuming, and painful:

Tattoo removal is expensive, and the more tattoos you have on your body, the longer they will take to remove through laser surgery or other methods because there are so many of them that must be removed. Tattoos can be costly, and they take a long time to apply onto the skin and heal over into your tattoo that you want on your body forever. Lastly, tattoos are most likely not going to make you happy in any way because it is something permanent on your body for life!

Should A Christian Get A Tattoo Or Body Art

The following Bible verses can help you to reason on the matter:

    • Women should adorn themselves with . . . modesty. That principle applies to both women and men. We should respect the feelings of others and not draw undue attention to ourselves.

    • Some want to establish their identity or independence, while others get a tattoo in order to assert ownership of their body. However, the Bible encourages Christians: Present your bodies a sacrifice living, holy, acceptable to God, a sacred service with your power of reason. Use your power of reason to analyze why you want a tattoo. If it is because you want to follow a fad or to show membership in a certain group, remember that your feelings may prove to be less permanent than the tattoo. Examining your motives can help you to make a wise decision.Proverbs 4:7.

    • The plans of the diligent one surely make for advantage, but everyone that is hasty surely heads for want. The decision to get a tattoo is often made in haste, yet it can have a long-term impact on relationships and employment. And tattoos can be costly and painful to remove. Researchas well as the booming business of tattoo removalshows that a large number of those who get tattoos eventually wish that they hadnt.

    The Principle Of Influence

Sleeve Tattoo By Tibor Limited Availability at New testament tattoo ...

Lets begin by examining a passage in 1 Corinthians 11. A rather unusual discussion takes place in this chapter concerning the wearing of veils. The apostle Paul writes, But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved . Verse 6 goes on to say, For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.

The department issued a new policy: officers could get tattoos only if they were hidden by their uniforms. The reason? Because of the message tattoos send. Numerous news stories on the internet discuss the problem of tattoos and body piercings in the workplace. One article from Fox News points out that some employers are having to write very specific dress codes to address the problem. Many employers are requiring that their staff dress in such a way as to hide their tattoos. The new tattoo Barbie doll was mentioned earlier. Here is an excerpt from an article discussing this new doll. Parents have already rallied up against Mattel, asking for the dolls to be pulled off the market. One parent asked, Whatever will they bring out next? Drug addict Barbie? Alcoholic Barbie? Why are parents rallying against Mattel? Because in our society tattoos have negative connotations.

Tattoos Arent Sin But Some Symbols Could Be

Another thing worth mentioning is that the symbols people tattoo should also be relevant to the religion. For example, people who tattoo potentially insulting or Satanic symbols could be considered sinful, as they are marking their body with symbols that directly go against Christianity.

Thats why its important to wonder about what the symbol youre trying to ink will represent in your life. For example, if youre going to make a tattoo of a pagan symbol, youre likely making a tattoo against Christianity, same if you are going to tattoo a sign that potentially hints at witchcraft or glorifying some other religion.

In the end, getting a tattoo with a Christian or some other symbol comes down to whether its your personal preference or not. If you think that getting a tattoo goes against your moral beliefs of something else, perhaps you shouldnt get it.
