Maggie Phillips is a business insurance consultant with ISU Insurance Services of Westlake in Westlake Village, Calif., who helps tattoo artists and shop owners buy specialty insurance. She says consumers never should assume a tattoo artist carries insurance. If a shop or artist lacks insurance, youre left with the medical bills for removing a botched tattoo or treating an infection. Filing a lawsuit may be your only route for getting money to cover those expenses.
I carry coverage just in case. Despite being careful and taking all safety precautions, you never know. Something can go wrong, says Max Fine, a tattoo artist in the Chicago area.
On the flip side, South Carolina tattoo artist Teri Yaki says she doesnt have liability coverage. And neither does anyone she knows who does tattooing.
Phillips says that if a tattoo artist is insured, infections are covered under the policys professional liability section. Inkers remorse, on the other hand, might not be covered. Some insurance policies wont cover a claim if you decide you dont like the color of your tattoo or you regret getting it, Phillips says. It may only cover claims where the artist injures the client.
Is There A Self
Yes, there is. Tattoo artists who run their own small studios, do tattoo sessions in their house, or at the house of the client can opt to get self employed tattooist insurance. This has general liability coverage and professional liability coverage. For tattoo artists who go to their clients address for tattoo sessions, self-employed tattooist insurance also offers commercial auto insurance as an additional option.
Note that self-employed tattooist insurance is easier to get than commercial tattoo insurance. This is because there are lesser requirements to qualify.
However, those who do tattoo sessions in their home or at the clients home must not expect cheap rates. Even though most states do not prohibit it, tattoo sessions at home lead to higher possibilities of infections to the clients tattoo and other exposures.
