How long does the tattoo take to heal.

A good skincare regime is crucial for healing your tattoo.

It is essentially an open wound and must be treated accordingly.

Here are the main things to consider:

  • Dont re-bandage it remove the initial bandage applied by your artist after two or three hours. This is because the wound needs to breathe in order to repair.
  • Keep it clean but dont submerge it in water gently wash your tattoo once a day in mild warm water but do not submerge it in water for long periods, at least for the first two weeks.
  • Use unscented ointment it is essential that you keep the skin around your tattoo moisturised so that it does not crack and peel. You should apply enough to keep it moisturised, not smothered in cream, once or twice a day. It is also important to use an unscented product, as the contents of some scented moisturisers can irritate the skin.
  • Protect it from the sun exposure to the sun can fade a new tattoo, particularly a coloured tattoo. So use an SPF cream, ideally unscented, and apply it sparingly if you are venturing out into the sun.
  • Dont scratch or pick at scabs like any wound, a tattoo will itch when it is healing but it is essential that you resist the temptation to scratch! You should also avoid peeling away any dead skin, as this can cause scabs to form if you do it too soon.

I got a tattoo 2 days ago in the crease of my elbow and is a bit red only in the patch by my vein bit worried cus I gt 16 and this never happened before

David Tupponce from Virginia on July 27, 2015:

If you use A& D – as I have on all 7 of my tattoos, and they all healed perfectly and rather quickly – be sure to use the clear stuff, not the white ! As far as sunblock once it has healed, if you want to keep the colors bright / unfaded – it is an absolute necessity. I like that you state that everybody is different and that people should use what works best on their skin.

It’s been a while since I had a new tattoo to heal. The mild soap is important so as not to irritate the area. I think long-term care is important to keep them looking as fresh as possible.

Once you’ve removed your tattoo’s covering, which you should do within 24 hours of receiving your tattoo, make sure to wash it with water and antimicrobial soap. Don’t cover the tattoo again, but make sure to wash it several times a day and apply a light layer of antibacterial ointment after you wash it. Make sure you let the tattoo dry between washing and applying ointment or lotion. You’ll need to repeat this process diligently for several weeks to promote optimal healing.

After a tattoo, you are going to be advised to use an ointment like A& D ointment to promote healing. You are supposed to wash the tattoo and then apply the ointment.

Do not use petroleum jelly like Vaseline as the ointment because petroleum jelly can cause the ink in the tattoo to fade.

How Long Should You Wait After A Tattoo To Play Sports

Physical exercise is not recommended in the immediate period after getting a tattoo due to the risk of injury, as the scabs could tear open due to stretching or touching and sweat could penetrate the tattoo. However, after a couple of weeks light sporting activities can be carried out as long as the tattoo is not being stressed too much . Sports that are at risk of damaging the thin skin should therefore be avoided. Direct sunlight should also be avoided, since the thin layer of skin cannot protect the tattoo colours.

Once the upper layers of your skin have healed , you can start exercising again, however, you should make sure that you apply aftercare to the tattoo before working out as well as cleaning and applying aftercare to your tattoo post-workout.

After about a month your tattoo will have healed and it feels as if the tattoo colours have already become part of your skin. The skin feels smooth, and the epidermis is completely healed. However, the underlying skin layers will still take a while to heal completely and to absorb the colour completely. In this phase, you no longer need to take special care of the tattoo. It doesnt hurt, however, to apply tattoo cream from time to time and to be careful not to hurt the skin on top of the tattoo.

Whether Your Tattoo Needs A Touchup

Sometimes the healing process will go slightly worse than hoped. Maybe youve applied too much ointment and that has drawn ink out, or maybe your skin hasnt reacted so well to the ink and some of the color has been lost.

Any of the above scenarios could likely prompt a trip back to the chair of pain for a touchup, in order to go over all the little bits that may not have turned out exactly how you would have liked. Obviously, this is going to add to your healing times, as essentially some parts of your tattoo will need to heal twice .

Is There A Daily Skincare Routine One Should Follow To Look After A Healing Tattoo

How long do tattoos take?

VM: Maintaining hygiene is key! Around three to four hours after leaving the tattoo studio, you should remove the plastic wrap, lather a mild soap like Dettol on the tattoo, and thoroughly but gently rinse it with water. Let it air-dry, and avoid towels or tissues. After the tattoo has dried, apply a thin layer of any mild, non-fragrant, colourless moisturiser, and gently re-wrap the tattoo with cling film, ensuring that it is not too tight. Follow this procedure three to four times daily for three days, after which you can simply moisturise the tattoo every couple of hours for at least one month. Note that the layer of moisturiser should be very light, and any excess should be dabbed off with a tissue.

CC: Before you leave the tattoo studio, your artist will wrap your tattoo to protect the ink from germs until you can clean the area yourself. Wait for a few hours to let the area settle down and to allow some of the blood around the tattoo to dispersewhich helps reduce swelling and tendernessand then remove the wrapping as long as you’re able to give the tattoo a thorough clean in lukewarm soapy water right away. Apply a layer of alcohol-free, antibacterial ointmentlike Aquaphor, Bacitracin, or A+D Ointmentbut don’t put on another bandage. Then, for three to six weeks depending on the size and location of the tattoo, gently wash it about four times daily with soap and water, and softly pat it dry. Follow up with a very thin layer of moisturiser or ointment.

Months 3 To 6 Completely Healed

After several months, your tattoo should be fully healed, including all the affected skin layers. There should be no itching whatsoever, and the tattoo will appear vivid, bright, and vibrant. Tattoos Behind The Ear

The area behind the ears is a very sensitive part of the body, so a tattoo in this area can be quite painful. Anecdotal evidence suggests that on a scale of 1-10, the pain level rates at about 5+. Most people struggle more with the vibrations from the tattoo machine than the pain from the tattoo.

The mastoid bone is positioned directly behind the ear, and with little flesh to soften the sound, it can be hard to bear. There are also various sensory nerves in that area, and the buzzing sound can be overwhelming.

A lesser-known fact about tattooing behind the ear is that your emotional state can affect the pain levels. Medical research has shown that negativity, stress, anxiety, and depression can increase peoples perception of pain. This, of course, applies to all tattoos and other pain-causing situations.

Tips For Mitigating The Pain From Ear Tattoos

Here are some tips to prevent extreme pain when you have your ears done:

  • Select an experienced and skilled tattoo artist.
  • Stay away from alcohol because it increases pain sensitivity, causes bleeding and dehydration.
  • Practice relaxation techniques like meditation and deep breathing to repel anxiety and negative emotions, which can heighten your pain levels.
  • Have something to eat, as this also helps lower pain sensitivity and dizziness.
  • Take short breaks during the procedure if it becomes a bit intense.
  • Follow all the aftercare instructions. It will accelerate the healing process.

After Your Uncover The Tattoo

The body has been around for a long time, and the healing process of a tattoo is really no different than many daily injuries people have.

After removing the wrap the scabbing process has started to set, meaning that those little holes that the tattoo needles punched into your skin have been effectively sealed.

This is where the instructions from one tattoo artist to the next will differ on aftercare. Some will tell you to start immediately moisturizing the area with non-scented lotion or vaseline.

I, however, used to be an EMT and CNA before I really just dove headfirst into the tattoo world. So my advice is that it is not going to hurt the tattoo to give it another full 24 hour period to let the scabbing process set it and solidify.

Once the scabbing process has set in thoroughly though, you are safe from infection.

The biggest reason you want to moisturize your tattoo at this point is to prevent the drying and cracking of skin and scabs because that is what will mar the image of whatever tattoo you have gotten.

If your skin dries it is also going to itch and you may subconsciously find yourself scratching your tattoo. This is also something you want to avoid.

Scratching away or pulling off the scabs that form will permanently scar your skin, and remove ink from the tattoo itself.

You want to give your tattoo as long as possible to heal because this will ensure that as much ink will stay in your skin, so those vibrant pinks and yellows will be just popping.

Do You Still Wash Your Tattoo When Its Peeling

It can be alarming to see your new tattoo peeling, but dont worry, its perfectly normal, and you should care for it as usual! Peeling tends to start on day 3 or 4. It is still important to wash the tattoo, even while its peeling, and even if you notice some ink coming away as you do it.

Skin around larger tattoos takes longer to recover and certain factors, like picking at the scabs, not moisturizing, forgoing SPF, or using a lotion with alcohol may slow the process.

At this point, the surface layer of the skin should be healed completely. However, the deeper layers of the skin are yet to heal. But, if at this stage your skin is still red or reddish, itchy, and hurts to touch, then make sure to talk to a doctor or your tattoo artist since you may experience an infection.

If this isnt the case, continue the regular aftercare routine , and refrain from touching, scratching, picking, or peeling. The tattoo will appear a bit cloudy and dull in appearance, but this is perfectly fine since it will become more vivid as the dry skin starts coming off.

Weeks 2 To 3 The Healing Progresses

In between the second and third week, you may notice the scabs coming off on their own, and the itching completely reducing. This is a sign that the healing progresses and the new skin is forming over the tattoo.

Make sure to still keep the tattoo moisturized, and do not wash it however, you can take showers regularly, and tap the tattoo to dry it. Do not dry the tattoo using a towel or an aggravating cloth tap dry it with a paper towel instead.
