We evaluate every single tattoo before we start treatment, and ensure clients know exactly what the process will look like. During a consultation we measure your tattoo, review your desired outcome and discuss payment options.

Most clients take advantage of one of these options:

Tattoo Age And Ink Quality

A tattoos pigment tends to fade over time, meaning an older tattoo is easier to remove. A newer tattoo will usually be bolder and brighter, which means it takes more sessions to break up the pigment. This affects the cost of laser tattoo removal.

The ink quality also plays a role in determining tattoo removal costs. High-quality ink is made to last longer, so it takes longer to break up and flush out of the skin during removal than low-quality ink. This can also affect tattoo removal prices.

Additionally, the strength of your individual immune system influences how quickly your tattoo fades once you begin laser tattoo removal, and thus, your tattoo removal price. A stronger immune system typically eliminates the ink from the skin faster after treatments, which could influence the total charge for your treatments.

How Much Does Laser Tattoo Removal Generally Cost

  • Post date |

Do you have a tattoo you regret but are worried about the cost of laser tattoo removal? Fortunately, there are several effective tattoo removal processes available. Laser treatment is so effective that it makes it seem like your old ink never existed! This post provides an in-depth analysis of the factors that affect your laser tattoo removal treatment.

Where You Got Your Tattoo

How much does it cost to remove a tattoo.Post tattoo ...

Certain tattoo parlors use more effective equipment, which can embed ink more deeply and permanently. Therefore, depending on the equipment used, your tattoo could be harder to remove and take more sessions under the laser.

Since tattoo ink isnt very well regulated by the FDA, theres no way to know exactly how the ink will respond to the laser treatments. As a result, where you get your tattoo can have a huge and unpredictable effect on the speed of the laser removal process.

Your own skin tone and biology in general can affect the removal process, too. Some peoples skin tends to hold onto ink more readily than others, requiring more sessions.

The Number Of Sessions You Need

The average cost for a single laser tattoo removal treatment session in the U.S. is $200-$500.

While that probably won’t break the bank, most tattoos cant be completely removed in one session. It typically takes three sessions to fade a tattoo for a cover-up and 10 to 12 removal sessions to fade it completely.

How many sessions youll need largely depends on the depth of the tattoo, the types and colors of ink used, the color of skin to be treated, and the type of laser used to eradicate it, says Dr. Russell Kridel, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon based on Houston.

Your provider should be able to estimate the number of sessions youll need at your initial consultation.

While some laser sessions are quick and easy, not all are. Mine have been taking about 45 minutes because we take before photos, clean the areas, inject them with lidocaine for freezing, laser them, ice them, and then bandage them. Oh, and sometimes a weird side effect happens where I taste metal when the laser hits my skin. Adams says it’s a sensation that some people experience when the lidocaine is hit by the laser and that it’s totally normal.

And Tattoo Removal Takes Time

Dr. Erum Ilyas of Montgomery Dermatology bases his pricing on both size of tattoo and the color of the ink. He told us that a tattoo the with an area around the size of the bottom of a can of soda that is mostly blues, blacks, and reds will cost about $300 per session and take somewhere between three and six sessions to remove. Each of these sessions runs between 15 and 30 minutes, but they need to be spaced apart by at least six weeks. So, the entire process could take a year to remove a tattoo entirely. While Sorrentino notes sessions most sessions can be performed in less than 10 minutes at his studio and he sees clearance in as little as four sessions and up to eight sessions, it could take up to 14 treatments to fully remove the tattoo.

For example, tattoos with a lot of red ink may take longer than those with a lot of black ink. Patients have the option of buying a package of laser tattoo removal treatments that will reduce the per treatment cost otherwise, we can charge by tattoo removal session.

Some patients believe that more traditional tattoo removal is cheaper. On average, laser removal treatments with old Q-switch tattoo removal lasers will cost less, but since more treatments are needed, the overall cost ends up being more expensive, while results are not as complete.

Fortunately black ink treats the best with a 1064 nano and picosecond laser. We have great success with the Cutera Enlighten. It can take 4-6 treatments and varies from person to person as it is your body which pulls out the ink, the laser just activates it. Good care between treatment is important and waiting 8 weeks between will maintain nice healthy skin. Cost will vary from area to area and different clinic. It could be $75 and up. Get a couple of consultations with experienced medical office based clinics is a good starting point. Whether it is worth it is up to you to decide how much time and money you want to invest vs. self esteem.

The Cost Of Removing A Small Tattoo

The cost of laser tattoo removal can vary depending on the company some charge by the hour, while others charge based on the size of the tattoo. However, when considering the surface area of your tattoo, the average cost of a laser tattoo removal treatment is approximately $80 to $100 per square inch.

This is great news when it comes to getting rid of smaller tattoos, as naturally, you wont have to spend as much money.

However, its important to emphasize that this price tag is per session. When you first got your small tattoo, it likely took only a session, excluding any touch-ups. Tattoo removals, on the other hand, can require several sessions. For smaller tattoos, you may be looking at around five sessions, but this could vary depending on whether coloured inks were used.

Several sessions are required because when the laser light is directed onto the skin, it heats up and shatters the ink that it first comes into contact with. Naturally, the top layers of skin will be impacted first and need time to react before another treatment can be used to approach the varying layers of skin.

As your sessions progress, you will notice that your tattoo will begin to fade. This is because the colour is beginning to only exist in the deeper layers of skin, and thus, the pigmentation is unable to appear as boldly.

What To Expect With Laser Tattoo Removal

Generally, removing a tattoo will be more expensive than getting inked. We have found that most tattoos disappear in three to seven sessions, with sessions ranging from 15 to 30 minutes. We typically schedule sessions six to eight weeks apart to allow enough time for your skin to heal properly.

Our team will help set an expectation around the total you will spend to have your tattoo removed. Oftentimes, clinics that use outdated technology will require more sessions and have less favorable results, which may also increase the price of your removal process and leave with you results that you dont love.

In addition to outdated tech, inexperienced laser technicians can also impact your removal experience. The MEDermis team has years of experience and can guarantee results to our clients.

When you come in for your free consultation, our team will examine your tattoo, lay out the expectations for the number of sessions, and can explain our in-house financing options. We also offer various discounts for packages purchased, referrals, or to military personnel, senior citizens, nurses, teachers, and more! Just take a look at our discount page or call the MEDermis laser clinic in your area for more information.

Tattoo Size And Color

As you may have guessed, the size and color of your tattoo will make a big difference to the final price. Larger tattoos will cost more to remove because they require more time under the laser. Small tattoos tend to be more affordable because there is less time that needs to be dedicated to them.

Light colors, like green, blue and orange, are some of the toughest to remove. Colors like black, brown, dark blue, and darker green are easier.

Be careful if youre thinking of getting a turquoise tattoo. They can be the toughest to get rid of.

Some people believe that light colors should be easier to remove, but since they require lasers with different wavelengths, it can make things complicated. Black tattoos absorb all wavelengths of the laser used, making darker colors disappear faster than lighter hues.

What Are Some Other Options For Dealing With My Unwanted Tattoo

If laser removal is a path youd rather not take, there are other options for dealing with unwanted tattoos that you may find are better-suited to you, based on your personal circumstances.

Depending on the size and style of the tattoo, you may be able to cover it with a new tattoo. According to tattoo removal specialists, Think Again, this works best for smaller, coloured tattoos, as cover-ups generally need to be both larger and darker than the original tattoo in order to effectively hide them. This means that if your unwanted tattoo is large and comprised of dark tones, it may not be a suitable candidate for a cover-up. This is where laser removal techniques could help, as they can be used to lighten the original tattoo to a point where covering it up becomes feasible.

However, if youre not interested in replacing the original tattoo with a better one and just want it covered, you could consider having it blacked out, which simply involves going over the entire tattoo with black ink to completely cover it.

Another perhaps more extreme option suggested by plastic surgery practice, Artiste, is getting a skin graft. This involves taking a patch of skin from somewhere else on your body and attaching it to cover the tattoo. If all goes to plan, after the wound has healed, which can take around seven days, the new skin will have covered the layers of skin holding the ink. However, Artiste says that there will still be discoloration on the skin for up to a year.
