Have no fear: This tattoo ink is made to disappear.

Tattoo parlors are a dime a dozen in alternative-friendly Williamsburg, but a new spot stands out for its promise of semi-permanent designs.

Welcome to the aptly named Ephemeral Tattoo: an 1,800-square-foot space with five artist stations, opening March 25. Stick-on, wash-off styles these are not the artists use real tattoo guns to plunge ink into their customers bodies.

The only difference is the studios patented, made-to-fade product, which lasts in the skin for somewhere between nine to 15 months. The founders say that theyre hoping to attract a slew of first-time clients to the world of tattooing, from the body-modification-curious to people, like themselves, who come from conservative backgrounds.

While there is a time and place for permanence there are millions of people who, like , wouldnt engage [with tattooing} because of that, Ephemerals co-founder Josh Sakhai told The Post.

The 24-year-old grew up Persian-Jewish in Great Neck, LI, and his religion explicitly prohibits getting tattooed. As a college freshman at NYU, he decided to rebel and get one anyway but he quickly changed his mind, afraid to commit to a design forever.

What To Expect With A Permanent Makeup Treatment

A cosmetic tattoo procedure is much like getting a regular tattoo. Though the experience will vary somewhat between different facilities, Swains studio has a fairly standard experience. You can expect a 30-minute consultation, where we review before and after photos, we discuss goals, design, facial morphology, measurements, medical history, and allergies, she explains. Fees are also discussed and collected. She says your actual procedure occurs in two stages. The first appointment is about two hours and consists of the first hour choosing colors, grafting, and numbing, and the second hour is working on the client and performing the micropigmentation application, she shares. At the end of treatment, we ice the area and go over post-procedure instructions. Its normal to have some discomfort during the procedure, but the numbing products should prevent any significant pain. She says the second stage is the follow-up appointment, where any concerns are addressed to meet the clients goals.

You should expect a change in the intensity and shade of the pigmentation over the first couple of weeks. Upon the initial application, the area treated is twice as dark , and it lightens over two weeks because a veil of skin heals over the treated area and then peels off, explains Swain. The peeling results in a more muted effect and natural color tone.

How To Make A Temporary Tattoo

  • Using temporary tattoo paper, print out your desired design using an inkjet printer.
  • Then, place the adhesive sheet that comes with your decal paper onto the printed image. This will give your design the stickiness that makes it stay on the skin.

    Permanent Makeup Vs Semi

“Permanent makeup, semi-permanent makeup, cosmetic tattooing, and micropigmentation are all names for the same thing, which is implementing pigment into the papillary layer of the dermis,” explains Bray. When it comes to differentiating permanent makeup versus semi-permanent makeup, Bray believes it’s important to know that many artists use different names for the same procedures due to cultural differences, artistic expression, and marketing. This can get confusing. ” regulations in the U.S. vary from state to state, and, of course, regulations vary from country to country,” explains Bray. “Technically, in the United States, all treatments are considered permanent from a health department standpoint.”

This is my first tattoo. Ive wanted a tattoo for a while, but Im Jewish and we dont usually get permanent things on our bodies. My buddy and I would always say, Man, I wish they made temporary tattoos that look real, and about a year ago we started calling places in South Jersey to see if they had anything like this. We just got laughed at. Then we found this place on the internet. I traveled about an hour and a half to get up here. My tattoo is a Hebrew word meaning inner strength. The past few years were a very difficult time in my life, and I wanted something to symbolize that.

You Can Get A Tattoo That Lasts One Year

Now that no-regret semi-permanent tattoos are possible, will the way we adorn our bodies change forever?

When I first heard about Ephemeral Tattoo, a shop that uses ink that fades in 9 to 15 months, I scoffed. Getting tattooed is a meaningful, deeply personal process, and made-to-fade artwork seemed to trivialize the art form. But then I realized my reaction was hypocritical. I have about 20 tattoos, and not all are the result of deep reflection. I didnt even choose the artwork for my favorite, a large floral tattoo that I got when I worked at a magazine and let readers vote on the design. I conceded that there may be a place for semi-permanent adornment.

People get tattoos for reasons as varied as the designs themselves. We get marked to assert our personal identity, to honor our cultural heritage, to commemorate a loved one. Many also get inked on a whimand a not-insignificant number say they regret doing so.

Tattoo regret was, in fact, one impetus for Ephemeral, which currently has outposts in Brooklyn and Los Angeles . With traditional ink, the pigment particles are too large for your body to break down, says Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, a Manhattan dermatologist who helped develop Ephemerals proprietary temporary ink. The macrophages just cant get in there. But the pigment particles in Ephemeral Tattoo ink are smaller and wrapped in a polymer complex that degrades over time, releasing the color and enabling it to be passed out of the body as waste.

Is There A Temporary Tattoo That Lasts For Months

According to professionals, semi-permanent tattoos are impossible to achieve. Chinese ink is a method where a tattoo artist cuts the surface of the skin and applies their own blend of ink to create a semi-permanent tattoo that lasts up to 6 months. This technique is controversial because the ink ingredients could be toxic and, in many cases, last much longer than expected.

Henna tattoos are another semi-permanent method that can last up to 1 month, depending on exposure to water. After some time, they fade from black to brown and then orange before disappearing. Since henna can cause allergic reactions, experts recommend patch testing.

    • Wash your hair since after the procedure you will be asked to keep the treated area dry.
    • If you are looking for a particular shape or color prepare pictures to show to your technician, remember to have realistic expectations.
    • Notice before Lip Blush -Lips are very delicate and prone to infection, that is why they should be prepared before the procedure.
    • Moisturizing and nourishing the lips before the treatment is very important. A well-moisturized skin helps to absorb pigment faster.
    • During the procedure stimulation with a needle affects the skin, which may activate the herpes virus. To prevent this, you should discuss with your doctor taking antiviral medicine 3 days before and 3 days after the treatment, or even longer if you suffer cold sores often. The drug should be taken only after consultation with a doctor and requires a prescription.

Ive been thinking about getting a tattoo for years, but I work in the health-care field and didnt want something too loud and obvious. This is my first tattoo, so I put a lot of thought into it. Its verse 55:13 from the Quran: So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? Its a saying that helps me get through bad times, and keeps me humble and optimistic. I actually might go for a more daring one next time.

Now, he has seven Ephemeral tattoos. Its unleashed the ability that I have to tell my story, my values, on my own body through this artform, Sakhai said.

Sakhais co-founders Brennal Pierre, 42, Vandan Shah, 33, and even CEO Jeff Liu, 33 all come from similar backgrounds, having grown up in traditional immigrant households.

The team none of whom are tattoo artists spent more than six years developing their proprietary ink, testing out more than 50 formulations to find one that faded in an aesthetically pleasing way. As opposed to permanent tattooing, where large pools of clumped-together ink particles resist being broken down by the bodys immune system, Ephemerals ink dissolves over time.

Your body is able to remove the smaller components that break off, said Sakhai.

For now, the ink is only available in black. Small, accessory-style subtle designs range in price from $175 to $225 moderately sized statement pieces, such as a bicep tattoo, cost $350 to $450.

Experienced tattoo artist Marissa Boulay said she notices a difference in how the ink performs, but its very minor.

This Venture Backed Company Is Inking Tattoos That Only Last For A Year

Why not get a tattoo? Well, because it lasts forever. That is, until 2015 when Forbes Under 30 Joshua Sakhai founded Ephemeral, a tattoo startup inking art that lasts for just one year.

After dropping out of New York University, Sakhai and his chemical engineer cofounders worked for six years to formulate non-permanent tattoo ink with the goal of making a harmless product that lasts only 365 days. And now, with $20 million in funding, the company owns and operates tattoo studios in New York and Los Angeles that do just that.

Though the company only opened its first parlor in March, it has inked over 5,000 semi-permanent tattoos. Rather than sell Ephemeral ink through traditional tattoo shops, Ephemeral owns and operates its own parlors. Sakhai also says that all Ephemeral artists have equity in the company and get benefits like healthcare and paid-time off, subverting the contract-based employment model of many tattoo shops. But like traditional tattoo commerce, customers submit inspiration to an Ephemeral artist, and the artist and customer work together to execute the Ephemerals tattoos, which cost between $195 and $550, priced by complexity.

In the next five years, we want to bring self-expression to as many people as possible, and in as many ways as possible, says Sakhai, who hopes to expand the brand globally. Were launching things like color and more tattoo complexity so people can really express themselves wherever they are in the world.

With The Look And Feel Of A Traditional Tattoo The Revolutionary Ink Disappears After A Year Taking Away The Permanence And Allowing More Space For Experimentation

Growing up in a Persian Jewish household on Long Island, tattoos were out of the question for Josh Sakhai. As a freshman at New York University, he saw friends adorn themselves with ink some with success, some with regret. And so Sakhai began to mull: What if tattoos didnt have to last forever?

Six years later, he has an answer. They dont. Along with CEO Jeff Liu and chemical engineers, Brennal Pierre and Vandan Shah, the team are set to launch Ephemeral the first-ever made-to-fade tattoo brand. It looks like a permanent tattoo. Its applied like a permanent tattoo but then it disappears in about a year.

Sakhai says the secret is in the ink, which his team developed alongside dermatologists to ensure safety and efficacy. Its particles are small enough to be broken down and absorbed by the body, resulting in an even fade over time. Sakhai is preparing to open Ephermerals first brick and mortar shop in Williamsburg, New York this spring. The setting, he says, will be inspired by spas and acupuncture clinics an intentional departure from the traditional tattoo experience.

Here, we talk with Sakhai about Ephemeral, bad tattoos, and the zen of impermanence.

    What is Ephemeral?

Josh Sakhai: Ephemeral is a tattoo company that has created the worlds first made-to-fade tattoo ink. What that means is an actual tattoo ink applied by a real tattoo artist, just like any other tattoo, that fades away in one year.
