Tattoo parlors are a dime a dozen in alternative-friendly Williamsburg, but a new spot stands out for its promise of semi-permanent designs.
Welcome to the aptly named Ephemeral Tattoo: an 1,800-square-foot space with five artist stations, opening March 25. Stick-on, wash-off styles these are not the artists use real tattoo guns to plunge ink into their customers bodies.
The only difference is the studios patented, made-to-fade product, which lasts in the skin for somewhere between nine to 15 months. The founders say that theyre hoping to attract a slew of first-time clients to the world of tattooing, from the body-modification-curious to people, like themselves, who come from conservative backgrounds.

When I first heard about Ephemeral Tattoo, a shop that uses ink that fades in 9 to 15 months, I scoffed. Getting tattooed is a meaningful, deeply personal process, and made-to-fade artwork seemed to trivialize the art form. But then I realized my reaction was hypocritical. I have about 20 tattoos, and not all are the result of deep reflection. I didnt even choose the artwork for my favorite, a large floral tattoo that I got when I worked at a magazine and let readers vote on the design. I conceded that there may be a place for semi-permanent adornment.
People get tattoos for reasons as varied as the designs themselves. We get marked to assert our personal identity, to honor our cultural heritage, to commemorate a loved one. Many also get inked on a whimand a not-insignificant number say they regret doing so.
Tattoo regret was, in fact, one impetus for Ephemeral, which currently has outposts in Brooklyn and Los Angeles . With traditional ink, the pigment particles are too large for your body to break down, says Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, a Manhattan dermatologist who helped develop Ephemerals proprietary temporary ink. The macrophages just cant get in there. But the pigment particles in Ephemeral Tattoo ink are smaller and wrapped in a polymer complex that degrades over time, releasing the color and enabling it to be passed out of the body as waste.

According to professionals, semi-permanent tattoos are impossible to achieve. Chinese ink is a method where a tattoo artist cuts the surface of the skin and applies their own blend of ink to create a semi-permanent tattoo that lasts up to 6 months. This technique is controversial because the ink ingredients could be toxic and, in many cases, last much longer than expected.
Henna tattoos are another semi-permanent method that can last up to 1 month, depending on exposure to water. After some time, they fade from black to brown and then orange before disappearing. Since henna can cause allergic reactions, experts recommend patch testing.

This Venture Backed Company Is Inking Tattoos That Only Last For A Year
Why not get a tattoo? Well, because it lasts forever. That is, until 2015 when Forbes Under 30 Joshua Sakhai founded Ephemeral, a tattoo startup inking art that lasts for just one year.
After dropping out of New York University, Sakhai and his chemical engineer cofounders worked for six years to formulate non-permanent tattoo ink with the goal of making a harmless product that lasts only 365 days. And now, with $20 million in funding, the company owns and operates tattoo studios in New York and Los Angeles that do just that.
Though the company only opened its first parlor in March, it has inked over 5,000 semi-permanent tattoos. Rather than sell Ephemeral ink through traditional tattoo shops, Ephemeral owns and operates its own parlors. Sakhai also says that all Ephemeral artists have equity in the company and get benefits like healthcare and paid-time off, subverting the contract-based employment model of many tattoo shops. But like traditional tattoo commerce, customers submit inspiration to an Ephemeral artist, and the artist and customer work together to execute the Ephemerals tattoos, which cost between $195 and $550, priced by complexity.
In the next five years, we want to bring self-expression to as many people as possible, and in as many ways as possible, says Sakhai, who hopes to expand the brand globally. Sakhai is preparing to open Ephermerals first brick and mortar shop in Williamsburg, New York this spring. The setting, he says, will be inspired by spas and acupuncture clinics an intentional departure from the traditional tattoo experience.
