Since freshly done tattoos are wounds on the skin which need time to heal, using scented lotions with harmful ingredients may not only damage your tattoo.
Therefore, if your tattoo is still fresh and in the healing process.
You should consider avoiding the scented lotions as you may not be sure which one has what type of chemical and whether it could be harmful to your tattoo or skin.
You may only interfere with your daily life routine
Including the types of skincare products you use and the kind of activities you are involved in when your tattoo is still fresh and is in the healing process.
However, once your tattoo has completely healed, nothing is barring you from resuming your routine.
You can go back to using your favorite lotions and skin care products without compromising the tattoo.

How To Take Care Of Your New Tattoo:

We are licensed professionals and the proper healing of your new tattoo is very important to us.
Your bandage should be worn for 1 to 2 hours. Thoroughly wash your hands and dry them with a paper towel before removing the bandage. If you find that the bandage is stuck to your tattoo, try running the bandage under water. You DO NOT however, want to soak your fresh tattoo in ANY water to include but not limited to bathtubs, swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and ponds. These all have chemicals, dirt, and all kinds of nasties that can cause infection. Showers are fine-just NO SOAKING!
Using a mild, fragrance-free soap gently wash all excess blood, ointment, ink, and plasma from your tattoo. Only use your hand DO NOT use a washcloth or loofah as they can harbor bacteria.
If you are not sure which soap to use, read the ingredients. If alcohol is listed as one of the first few ingredients, DO NOT USE IT. Soap with fragrance and alcohol will burn and can over-dry the skin.
After washing the tattoo, pat it dry with a paper towel. DO NOT use a hand or bath towel. Towels can harbor bacteria. DO NOT re-bandage your tattoo. It needs to breathe and get air to heal properly.
Before going to bed, wash your hands and wash your tattoo. Sleep in something old to cover the area that was tattooed. Most tattoos will ooze clear plasma the first night and this can stain and stick to clothing and sheets.

Does Soap Fade Tattoos
Using harsh chemicals on a healing tattoo could cause it to fade faster than usual. This includes scented soap. Also, overwashing your tattoo or soaking it in soapy bath water while the tattoo is healing could cause the ink to fade. The best way to avoid fading and maintain the quality of your tattoo is to gently wash it twice a day with your hands, using warm water and a mild, unscented soap like Dial Gold.
Keep It Clean But Not Soaked
A fresh tattoo is effectively a wound, so it’s important to keep it clean in order to avoid infection. “It will need to be cleaned regularly, particularly in the first 24-48 hours”, says Hayley. When you take the wrap off, clean the tattoo with an antibacterial, fragrance free soap, or warm water, pat your skin dry, then apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, antibacterial moisturiser over the top. This causes scabbing and other unsightly after-effects. You can use baby wipes to decimate this type of buildup and keep your tattoo looking fresh longer.

Keep The Tattoo Clean
- USE GOOD HYGIENE!Always wash your hands before touching the tattoo, wear clean clothes next to the tattoo, and keep other peoples hands OFF your new tattoo. Good hygiene will prevent most infections.
- Wash the tattoo at least once a day, but dont rub it with washcloths or towels for the first couple of weeks. If something touches your tattoo that is NOT freshly cleaned hands dirty hands, pets, clothes, upholstery, etc wash it as soon as possible
- Other than cleaning the tattoo, keep it out of the water until its done flaking and is at least 2 weeks old.
Can You Exercise With A New Tattoo
Intense workouts cause your muscles and joints to move around excessively. Large tattoos, especially those around joints , take longer to heal. Repeated workouts cause repetitive movements that irritate new tattoos, causing the skin to become red and cracked, and possibly prolonging the healing process.

Soap Ingredients To Avoid
Soaps that have alcohol as one of the primary ingredients tend to be harsh and dry out the skin. Therefore, they should be avoided when washing a new tattoo. That means you definitely dont want to use hand sanitizer on any tattoos as hand sanitizer is usually made of 60% or more alcohol.
You may want to avoid soaps with sulfates as well. Sulfates can also dry out your skin and cause irritation especially if you have sensitive skin. You want to keep your skin clear and happy during the healing phase of your new tattoo.
Never thought to read the ingredients on your soap before? Well, getting a new tattoo is the time to do it! Check the ingredients list thoroughly for alcohol, sulfates, and perfumes. If your soap doesnt have these ingredients, its most likely safe to use on your new tattoo. However, we recommend using one of the soaps on the list above to get the best results.
Care During The Second Half Of The Month
- Your tattoo may have a waxy or hazy look, or look like its losing color. Dont worry most of the time, this is just the skin going through its normal process, and the tattoo will come back and look great.
- Remember that while its okay to get in the water once the tattoo is done flaking and is at least 2 weeks old, keep the tattoo out of the sun for a whole month.
While your tattoo is healing, please give us a call or stop by if you have any concerns or questions. And when your tattoo is fully healed in 4 or 5 weeks, ideally it will be beautiful and just as we planned please come show off! But if something didnt take during the healing process, dont hesitate to come back and talk to your artist about a touch-up.
