It seems that you could tattoo over it but its best to avoid. If your doctor doesnt know maybe call around to differnt doctor offices or post on the tattoo reddit they might have a better answer. Nexplanon is always working without you having to do anything.
You could also compromise the implant while getting the tattoo. Give your loved one time space and freedom to choose a design on their own.

I went to get my birth control implant replaced. Ive had a subdermal Nexplanon implant in my arm for the past five years, which makes it my longest-lasting relationship. That tiny piece of noodley plastic and I have been through an awful lot together. I called her Xena.
But five years is the Food and Drug Administration-approved lifespan of the device. So I went to get it popped out and a new one popped in. The nurse practitioner was the same one who placed it in me back in August 2016, so it felt satisfyingly full circle to have her do it again. If you were wondering, yes, it does hurt a bit, but its about the same pain level as getting a cavity filled at the dentist, and I imagine that it definitely goes by a lot faster than childbirth. Also, the 2006 song Promiscuous by Nelly Furtado was playing through the speakers during the procedure, which seemed kind of inappropriate for a doctors office, but the comedic effect could not be beat.
I asked the medical assistant if I could keep the old implant. She said yes. Actually, what she said was: Let me check. Nobody has ever asked that question before. I wanted to frame it, and my lovely new boyfriend not only thought this was a fine idea but also found me an enormous, ostentatious, 22-by-22-inch frame with a kelly green matte backing and did such a good job framing it that my mother hung it on the wall as modern art that goes with the rooms color scheme.

For a period of time, donors are asked to discontinue activities such as running, moderate to high impact aerobic activity, horseback riding and strenuous lifting to further decrease this risk.

Information For After Your Nexplanon Placement
Incision Site Care
Keep the wrapped compression dressing on for 12 to 24 hours. Underneath is a Band-Aid and/or tape strips across the insertion site, which should be maintained for three days. The insertion site is only 4 mm long. Contact the office you develop a fever above 100.4, or there is expanding redness or pus from the incision site.
Pain
It is normal to have some discomfort and bruising following placement. Ibuprofen can be used as needed for next few days. Contact the office if pain becomes too severe. After the first week, you should be able to feel the Nexplanon implant without any discomfort. If you cannot feel the implant at all, please call the office.
Bleeding
It is very common to have bleeding after Nexplanon placement. Irregular bleeding can continue for 3-6 months in some cases. The majority of patients continue to report some occasional spotting at the follow-up visit. The most common change with Nexplanon is an irregularity to your normal menstrual bleeding pattern. In studies, one out of ten women stopped using the implant because of an unfavorable change in their bleeding pattern. You may experience longer or shorter bleeding during your periods or have no bleeding at all. The time between periods may vary, and in between periods you may also have spotting.
