What Air Force Tattoos Are Not Allowed

While the Air Force has one of the more lenient tattoo policies of all the military branches, they still have standards and restrictions that must be followed.

As far as size and location of unauthorized tattoos, Airmen cannot be inked up in the following locations:

Otherwise, its fair game for size and location.

USAF Airmen can have tattoos that are much larger than their hand when covering it.

And if you think about it, that leaves A LOT of canvas to be tattooed.

See below for a visual of what the new Air Force tattoo policy entails, what they prohibit, and what they permit.

Now that youre clear on the size and locations of unauthorized tattoos, lets discuss the content of tattoos that are prohibited.

The following unauthorized body markings are not allowed anywhere on the body, even when covered up by PTs.

So keep this in mind when visiting a recruiter, because they will ask, and you must tell.

Here are the tattoos not allowed in the USAF:

• Any markings that are obscene
• Associated with gang activity
• Ethnic or religious discriminatory tattoos

These tattoos will NOT fly, in more ways than one.

However, if you are unsure of a particular tattoo or tattoos, it doesnt hurt to visit an Air Force recruiter and get their opinion.

Sometimes they give waivers in certain cases.

Youd hate to blow your chances simply because you think your tattoo will automatically disqualify you.

What Air Force Tattoos Are Allowed

Well, for starters, Airmen can sport tattoos that are nearly 100% the size of their body.

As previously mentioned, the Air Force has lifted the 25% rule , and for good reason.

Recruiters were aware of the fact that nearly half of all millenials had a tattoo.

But what they quickly realized was that 1 in every 5 of the recruits who did have tattoos had tattoos that required review and were potentially disqualifying.

And the #1 disqualifier turned out to be the 25% rule.

Go figure.

Today, with that rule out the window, Airmen can have virtually any size tattoo, or grouping of tattoos, anywhere on their chest, back, arms, legs, and feet.

Ah, yes, the feet! Here is where the Air Force differs from other branches as well.

They allow tattoos on the feet below the ankle line.

In other words, Airmen can get inked up to their hearts content .

Sleeves anyone?

Its true, this means the USAF now allows sleeve tattoos full-sleeves or half-sleeves, or anything in-between is now perfectly acceptable.

Hand tattoos are technically allowed, but as mentioned, theyre limited to one ring tattoo on one hand only.

According to one news report, Current Airmen with existing hand tattoos that were authorized under the previous policy will be grandfathered in under the old policy standards.

Advice For Your Civilian Career

Some federal agencies do not have strict or even explicit policies on tattoos. The CIA even notes that tattoos will NOT disqualify you from gaining employment, and all professionally qualified people are encouraged to apply still. While organizations like the FBI have stricter regulations on physical appearance in regards to remaining clean and professional, they dont specifically ban tattoos for employees.

But like the military, the general what, where, and how big questions apply. Could the content be deemed as offensive? Is it derogatory to a certain group of people? Would your mom wince at the sight of it? Ask yourselves these questions before branding yourself.

Is the tattoo covering your face? Are there distracting markings visible on your neck? These are questions that highlight what would stand out to a potential employer in an interview.

Coming from a millennial whos covered in them, whether you agree or disagree with throwing some paint up, Ive never had an issue obtaining employment in national security due to my ink. I love that my tattoos tell my story or what is important enough to keep on my body forever. But I can also cover mine with long sleeves during an interview. Best bet is to sit on the idea for six months to a year, and if youre still game for sitting under a needle, go for it.

One of the most common questions we get is Can I Join the Army if I have a Tattoo. This article answers that question and outlines what types of tattoos may keep you from joining the U.S. Army.

You will NEVER be allowed to enlist in the Regular Army, Army Reserves, or Army National Guard if you have any of the non-waivable disqualifying tattoos below. Depending on abundance of recruits, standards may be more strict than listed:

The updated regulation takes into account that previously authorized tattoos should not prevent a Soldier from becoming an officer, but that candidates are to be evaluated based on the whole Soldier concept, or all characteristics of a Soldier.

Piercing While Not In Uniform

Members are prohibited from attaching, affixing or displaying objects, articles, jewelry or ornamentation to or through the ear, nose, tongue, or any exposed body part .

There is an exception women are authorized to wear one small spherical, conservative, diamond, gold, white pearl, silver pierced, or clip earring per earlobe and the earring worn in each earlobe must match. Earrings should fit tightly without extending below the earlobe. If the earring is a clip, the band can show.

Military Tattoo Rules In One Graphic

To understand just how far the military has come on tattoo tolerance, check out below the comprehensive graphic GAO created. It shows side-by-side depictions of areas of the body that were off-limits to tattoos prior to 2020, and the much more limited restrictions now in effect. The graphic also contrasts the various services policies on tattoos.

Under old regulations, every service prohibited tattoos on the head and face most services substantially restricted ink on the hands and fingers. All services had limitations on how much ink could show on the arms, torso, and legs, though no service completely barred tattoos on these areas.

Under new policies, four out of six services permit tattoos on the neck, with some limitations. Previous limitations on the arms, legs and torso have been lifted for all the services. . All services now permit tattoos on the fingers, with some limitations, and three of the six now allow hand tattoos as well. With only head and face tattoos still banned across the board, its clear that advocates for ink are winning their fight over the more conservative military establishment.

That said, some services have come farther than others. The Marine Corps, which takes special pride in its professional image, has historically been among the most conservative on the subject, limiting size and placement of tattoos and restricting certain special duties, such as embassy security guard, to those without large visible ink designs.

What Happens If A Soldier Is Caught With An Unauthorized Tattoo/refuses To Remove

According to the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia Manual 670-1, there are procedures for handling unauthorized tattoos.

If a soldier has any tattoo or brand that is prohibited under the Army tattoo policy , he or she will receive a written notice from a commander regarding the violation.

Once the soldier receives the notice he or she has 15 days to make a decision.

The Army traditionally provides three options: A) appeal the decision of the commander, B) have the tattoo professionally removed, or C) keep the tattoo.

Tattoo policy appeals are handled by a commander at the O-6 level for a final determination.

Military personnel that violates the Army tattoo policy are responsible for any costs related to the removal of the tattoo.

Soldiers that elect to keep tattoo in violation of the policy will begin administrative separation proceedings in order to terminate his or her service.

The U.S. Army like every branch of the military has fairly strict grooming standards.

Men and women service members are both required to follow stern haircut requirements.

Additionally, men are not permitted to have beards in the Army though tightly regulated mustaches are authorized.

Body piercings are not allowed for male service members, while females can sport piercing with several restrictions.

More Ink On Heads Fingers Allowed In Updated Coast Guard Tattoo Policy

Coast Guard men, women and recruits now have more options to show off tattoos on their fingers or behind their ears under a new policy the service announced Monday.

The new finger regulation allows service members to get a tattoo anywhere between their first knuckle and fingertip, or on the top or side of the finger, in an area that may be visible at the position of attention.

The Coast Guard previously had stipulated that a single finger tattoo could be placed per hand but needed to be between the first and second knuckle. Any ring tattoo counts as the single finger tattoo allowed on that hand.

The new rules also allow for a single tattoo no larger than an inch wide to be placed behind one ear.

The Coast Guard last updated its tattoo policy in 2019 to broaden the pool of potential recruits and allow members flexibility in decorating their bodies.

Commandant Adm. Karl Schultz said in his first State of the Coast Guard Address in 2019 that the services leadership needed to look at its policies to draw service members and retain them.

All the military services have issued updates in recent years to address similar concerns, as well as trends in the general population where they hope to attract recruits.

Whats Wrong With Tattoos

For many people who are over 25, tattoos were seen as something that may make finding employment difficult if they were visible and especially if they were big. For careers such as teachers, law enforcement, and the military, tattoos were seen as something that would stop you from pursuing your dream job.

This is especially true when considering the way tattoos have been and still are used by members of gangs, racist groups, and other organized criminal institutes.

A recent study showed that people with tattoos are perceived as having more deviant lifestyle qualities by others, whether they are true or not more promiscuous, heavy drinkers, smokers, drug users, as well as character judgments like insecurity, less intelligent, and even less honest.

So, there is a stigma against those who have tattoos today and the same study suggested that those who have them are more likely to face employment discrimination.

Theres nothing wrong with having tattoos, usually. Some people will not probably still not feel comfortable when around those with face tattoos or what they consider to be extremist messages. But we cant change the way people think about others who like tattoos, especially not overnight.

The Army Tattoo Policy Whats Allowed And Whats Not Cleverism

Space Force Tattoo Policy 2022

The U.S. Space Force, the countrys newest military service branch, allows tattoos on the chest and back , arms, legs, and feet, according to its official policy.

Chest and back tattoos cannot be visible through any uniform or visible while wearing an open collar uniform. One tattoo on the neck or behind the ear is allowed, but it cant exceed 1 inch in any direction. Neck tattoos also cant be located on the front of the neck.

Ring tattoos are limited “to a single band, no more than 3/8 of an inch in width, below the knuckle and above the finger joint on one or both hands.” Only one ring tattoo is allowed per hand, the policy states. Tattoos elsewhere on the hand are not allowed.

There are no other size or placement limitations on tattoos as long as they are in accordance with the official policy.

Making Sense Of Waiver Rules

According to GAO, every service except the Navy allows recruits and current service members to request waivers for certain tattoo restrictions. However, the watchdog organization said, the services dont consistently lay out the possibility of such waivers or the process for getting them.

respective policies generally do not document this possibility clearly,it states. Clear guidance on waivers for unauthorized tattoos would provide consistent information about requirements for waiver requests and conditions for approval. This could clarify whether tattoo prevalence affects future or continued military service.

Currently, all services offer recruit waivers for tattoo rules, although the Air Force and Space Force limit such waivers to exceptionally qualified recruits in critical, understaffed career fields. None of the six services, however, outlines how to request waiver approval and what conditions must be met, GAO found. The Navy is the only service that does not offer waivers for current troops. Again, however, the other services fail to specify how to apply for these waivers, and none are clear about which tattoos might qualify for them.
