Showering With A New Tattoo

Other Notes When And After Showering With A New Tattoo

How to SHOWER with a NEW TATTOO

On the above, we shortly give you some tips when showering with a new tattoo, which are:

  • Thoroughly wash your hands
  • Carefully set up the water temperature and power
  • Prevent water from directly touching your tattooed skin
  • Always gently clean your tattooed area
  • Attentively dry your tattooed skin after showering
  • Use lotion or ointment to foster the moisture of the tattooed skin

And now, an attempt will be made to generalize all the other notes we should pay attention to get the right way of showering with a new tattoo.

Avoid shower for too long

The tattooed skin is still sensitive and vulnerable and thus, if you shower for too long, the water and the soap might damage your tattoos. To be more specific, the water and the soap, in a long time, they will absorb to the skin in your tattooed area, which not only makes your tattooed skin wet for too long but also add germs to your wounded skin.

In another wording, the healing time of new tattoo could not be longer if its skin is kept dried and fresh. Therefore, it is suggested that you should finish your showering with a new tattoo as soon as possible.

Do not re-wrap your new tattoo

If your tattoo artist does not give you any specific advice, you should never continue to use a bandage to cover your new tattoo after showering and taking away the first bandage. To have proper healing, your new tattoos need to breathe thus, hiding the tattooed skin by applying a gauze will prolong the recovery time of your original symbols.

Ink Rejection Or Allergy

At any stage in the healing process, the body may reject an ink color. If the body is allergic to an ink, a raised and painful rash may form on the skin.

To avoid ink rejection, some tattoo artists will do an allergy test with the color in question by applying a small amount to the skin. If it causes a reaction, it is not safe to use.

Ink allergies may occur because tattoo ink colors contain many different substances. For example, black ink contains carbon, and red ink contains mercury sulfide.

Anyone experiencing a rash on or around a tattoo should visit a doctor, who can identify and treat the rash. The person may also wish to contact their tattoo artist.

Each tattoo artist is likely to have a different recommendation for what moisturizer someone should use. Common recommendations include:

  • alcohol-free healing ointments, such as Eucerin or Curel

Tattoos are a lifelong commitment and require some special care to keep them looking good for many years to come.

Do Set The Right Temperature

Should you use hot or cold water? Well, for starters, hot water may not be good for a brand-new tattoo. This is because hot water opens skin pores which may cause some ink to leak out, especially if the water is directed full blast at the area. So, the right temperature for new tattoos in the shower is either lukewarm or cold.

Lukewarm water helps remove tattoo gunk, and cold water closes up the pores. Some tattooists recommend running coldwater during the last 30 seconds to help close the pores and prevent ink loss.

According to the Atomic Tattoo website:

Youre in the clear once the scab has formed, hardened, and fallen off. After that happens, you know that the open wound has healed, new skin has grown, and its safe to jump in the bathtub or jump in the ocean waves.

Tips For Showering With A New Tattoo

The first several weeks after getting a new tattoo are very important. Proper care is crucial as a new tattoo is an open wound it needs a certain amount of time to heal properly. When a fresh tattoo is not properly cared, loss of pigmentation, scarring along with other problems may occur. Tattoo aftercare is a process with multiple steps, among which knowing how to shower is important. Knowing how to shower will help your tattoo heal faster and maintain its appearance for a long period of time.

Why Pay Attention To Tattoo Care

This IS How to Shower With A NEW Tattoo! | Avoid These Things

Tattoos only look good when proper care is taken of them. People who dont pay attention to their tattoo during the two weeks after it is done are the ones who end up with a blotchy and unattractive tattoo.

This period of two weeks after the tattoo is referred to as the Healing Phase and does exactly what it says. Taking proper care of your tattoo is also essential because it shapes the way your tattoo is going to look in the future, and how long it will maintain itself before you have to get it retouched.

Things like properly moisturizing the area with a product like Hustle Butter and keeping it clean are some of the basic things that tattoo artists tend to tell the people that they are working on. However, simple things like taking a shower need to be done with caution, owing to the reaction that tattoos can have with water.

How To Shower With A New Tattoo Correctly

Follow the steps below to make sure that you dont damage your tattoo in the shower:

1. Set Water Temperature and Power

Turn on your shower and run the water until its either cool or lukewarm. Always check the water with your hand before getting in.

Do not get in a hot shower with a new tattoo. Your skin will be extremely sensitive and the hot water will cause pain and stinging to the area, as well as possibly causing the area to swell more than it already has done.

Warm/hot water also has the ability to open up the pores in your skin, which could, in turn, lead to ink being lost, leading to a faded or patchy tattoo.

For this same reason, you will want to make sure that the shower isnt set to blast water out too powerfully, in case your tattoo comes into contact with the jetstream. The powerful water jets could cause your tattoo to sting, and they may possibly force ink out from the area.

2. Wet the Tattoo

Very carefully dampen the tattooed area with the shower water. Never apply water directly onto the tattoo with the showerhead.

Instead, make sure that you cup the water with your hand and wet the area this way. This is less harsh on the sensitive skin and limits the possibility of the jets coming into contact with the area.

3. Gently Clean the Tattoo

Ensure you have a skin-sensitive and fragrance-free soap available to clean your tattoo with.

4. Quickly Get out of the Shower

Once youve cleaned yourself and the tattoo, leave the shower as quickly as possible.

Should I Cover My Tattoo When I Shower

Wrapping your tattoo is one of the essential preconditions to ensure proper aftercare. Depending on the healing speed, the actual of keeping that bandage or wrapping can vary.

Generally, you can uncover your tattoo after 2-4 hours. In case, your tattoo is wrapped with plastic foil, and you should keep it for at least 3-4 days.

However, taking off the bandage means youre initially ready to take a shower. But many people make a common mistake by taking showers while the tattoo is still covered with a bandage.

Covering your brand new tattoo while taking a shower can create a moist environment under the bandage, leading to bacterial growth or any other pathogenic infections. So, dont cover your tattoo while taking a shower.

Moisturize The Area / Apply Lotion

After your tattoo has completely dried, you will want to add a good quality tattoo-safe lotion to the area to ensure the skin doesnt dry out too much. Specially-sold tattoo lotions are usually full of added vitamins and ingredients to help speed up the healing process.

Ensure your hands are clean before applying any lotion, and make sure you only apply a very thin layer to the tattoo. A thick layer can suffocate the area and prolong healing times.

There are many various tattoo-specific lotions available which help to keep the area well hydrated and promote faster healing by containing quality organic ingredients.

The best tattoo lotion Ive ever personally used is a vegan aftercare product called After Inked Tattoo Aftercare Lotion. This stuff works amazingly well during the healing process not only by keeping your tattoo really well hydrated but also by soothing any annoying itching and irritation. When using it from the very start of the healing process, this lotion will help to decrease tattoo healing times and work towards eliminating any lingering dryness and scabbing.

    Leave That Bandage Alone

Open wounds are breeding grounds for bacteria and infectionand, as pretty as your new tattoo is, it’s a wound. Your artist took care to cover it up to keep airborne bacteria from invading it. Leave the bandage on for a minimum of two hours. The excitement of having a new tattoo will make you want to remove the bandage so you can show your friends, but you must resist the temptation.

The only exception to this rule is if your artist covered your tattoo with some kind of plastic. This will prevent air from reaching your skin and may be extremely detrimental to a tattoo, so you should remove it immediately. You’re better off not having any covering than to be suffocating your new tattoo with plastic wrap. Better yet, ask your artist to use bandaging rather than plastic in the first place.

The type of bandage your tattoo artist uses on you will determine how soon you can shower normally.

If they have used a waterproof protective tattoo film, you can shower pretty much normal almost immediately. Once the bandage has been removed after 3-5 days, you can shower at any time you want, following some precautions.

Some old-school bandages or cling wrap as is traditionally used will require a waiting period of up to 12 hours until you can get in the shower. Be sure to make note of this with your tattoo artist.

Protect Your Tattoo from the Sun

After your tattoo is totally healed, normally you will want to show it off. However, you should protect your tattoo from the sun as UV lights can quickly damage it. Make sure to protect your tattoo by applying sunblock of a minimum 30 SPF.
