What Does God Say About Tattoos

Choosing The Best Christian Tattoo

Are Tattoos Wrong? | What Does the Bible Say About Tattoos?

Always remember, the best tattoo that you can put on your body is the one that brings glory to God and His Kingdom. As stated earlier, there are countless Christian tattoo designs that you can find on the Internet today, what matters most is that you are pleased with the design and that God is honored and glorified. Think about it and dont forget to pray for it.

You might know a fellow Christian who has a tattoo, you can ask them for advice or recommendations. While youre asking them for tips or advice on what kind of tattoo you must choose, this is also the best time for you to ask where you can find the best tattoo artist in your area. Perhaps, they can recommend to you a Christian tattoo artist isnt that incredible!

Are Christian Tattoos Allowed

How come, that so many Christians get tattoos and participate in the trends of this world? The answer is very simple. They are carnal and still love the world. Therefore the ruler of this world the devil, is still active in their lives. They are subjected to and controlled by the spirits of this world. They walk after the flesh and are ruled by their senses, feelings, and emotions.

Most Christians want to do their own will and want to fulfill the lusts and desires of their flesh. Therefore these spirits of the world have free access to their lives. They still love the world and the things that are in the world.

Instead of separating themselves from the world unto God, they adopt the behavior and customs of the world. Therefore there is no difference between the lives of Christians and the lives of those, who belong to the world.

Although Christians dont have tattoos like skulls, drakes, snakes, tigers, mandala tattoos, tribal tattoos, Maori tattoos, etc. on their bodies, but Christian tattoos Biblical tattoos or godly tattoos, like cross tattoos, fish tattoos, dove tattoo, religious words tattoo , Bible scripture tattoos, a tattoo of Jesus, Chi-Rho tattoo, religious tattoo sleeve, etc., that doesnt change anything about the act of having an image engraved in their body. It doesnt make it sacred, holy, and acceptable to God.

Tattoos Are A Part Of Our Culture Today

Many Christians believe that it is wrong to get tattoos, while others do not see anything wrong. Tattoos have been around for many years and will continue to be a trend in society. There has been much debate about people who choose to get Bible verses tattooed on them and whether it is a sin.

It is not wrong for Bible verses about tattoos in the New Testament, but there are Bible verses that deal with how we should view ourselves as Christians, which can lead us down Gods path of righteousness or one full of temptation. We must remember that everything comes from Him, and without him, we are nothing.

Is It A Sin To Get A Tattoo What Does The Bible Say About Tattoos

The short answer isâ¦nothing. At least nothing definitive. The Bible makes no specific reference to tattoos as we understand them in modern times. Some Christians condemn all tattooing as immoral because God clearly forbids them in Leviticus 19:28. Since the word tattoo does appear in this verse in some popular English translations, this argument seems straightforward. For example, the NIV reads, Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.

Other Christians say this passage no longer applies to us because it is Old Testament law, and not for Christians. If you go online to try to answer the tattoo question, youll see both approaches and contradictory conclusions. Both of these approaches, however, are misleading because, as we will see, the answer to the tattoo question is that the Bible has nothing clearly to say about the practice of injecting ink under the skin to form permanent pictures, patterns or messagesa.k.a. tattooing.

The background to this law was that Israel, after being rescued from slavery, was between Egypt and Canaan. Recent archeology indicates that, while Egypt did tattoo, it was limited to women. Evidence suggests that tattooing the body parts of women associated with fertility was believed to be a good luck charm to protect the birthing process. Women also frequently had imprints of the fertility goddess, Bes, which seems to support this theory.

Does The Bible Say Anything At All About Tattoos

First of all, the Bible is all about interpretation so you can take things literally word for word or you can find your own meaning which makes sense for you. If you take the Bible word for word, in Leviticus 19:28, its exact translation is: And a cutting for the dead you will not make in your flesh and writing marks you will not make on you I am the Lord. Some modern-day versions of the Bible do have the word tattoo written in the translation and then it reads: Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord. That makes the argument against tattoos seem much stronger but since the word tattoo did not come into the English language until the 18th century, the literal translation of the Bible does not write tattoo at any point. That here is the only explicit mention of body modifications written in the Bible.

Your Body Is A Sanctuary Of The Holy Spirit

Part 1: Tattoos – What Does The Bible Say?

Have you not known that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit in you, which you have from God? and you are not your own

While I was reading this scripture, the image of tattoos entered my mind. You might think: What do tattoos have to do with this scripture? This scripture is about fornication and not about tattoos. You are absolutely right! That was exactly what I thought. While I was thinking about it, a picture entered my mind of beautiful buildings that were covered in graffiti.

Thats art, says the vandal alias the artist, who paints drawings and/or texts on the walls. They paint on someone elses property, but they dont have the legal right to do that.

The vandal may like graffiti, but the owner doesnt. The owner doesnt appreciate it and must pay a lot of money to remove the graffiti and restore the damage to his building.

Can Be A Form Of Adornment

The Bible talks about not having your beauty come from your adornment. Tattoos, clothing, jewelry, and other external items can also represent social status and wealth. And the concern is about drawing more attention to whats on our bodies instead of the value that comes from within.

That being said, adornment in and of itself isnt necessarily wrong. But when decorating or adorning ourselves uses more of our money, time, and effort than we put into who we are as a person, therein lies the issue.

Do not let your adornment be merely outwardarranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparelrather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God .

Does This Answer Apply To People Today

That, then, is a brief summary of what Leviticus 19:28 is talking about. But to whom is the Lord speaking when he addresses this subject? Who is prohibited from engaging in these actions? To everyone in every circumstance in every era of history? No. God is speaking only to the Israelites under the old covenant.

This takes us back to the point we made earlier: even when the Bible does answer a question, we need to be certain that the answer is addressed specifically to us and not to an individual, people group, or historic situation. The prohibitions in Leviticus 19:27-28 are never repeated in the New Testament, never applied to everyone, and certainly never included in prohibitions for Christians.

Secular Influence And The Popularity Of Tattoos

40 Philippians 4:13 Tattoo Designs For Men

Tattoos may be more accepted today, but it was not until the late 20th century that tattoos gained great popularity in the United States. Prior to that, tattoos were seen mostly on military men, criminals, bikers or other tough people.

Peer pressure has played a major role in tattoos through history. Whether due to identification with a tribe, pagan god, military group, prison group or gang, sports figures, entertainment icons or circle of friends, people often get tattooed for identity and acceptance.

But God tells His called-out people, Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the worldthe lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of lifeis not of the Father, but is of the world .

Some argue that a tattoo is merely an adornment like jewelry. But jewelry can be quickly removed or changed a tattoo cannot. Many have been tattooed later to regret it. Not surprisingly, tattoo removal is now a big business. But attempted removal is expensive, uncomfortable and not always successful and scarring or skin variations often remain.

Why Does The Bible Forbid Tattoos

And have we been misinterpreting Leviticus?

Tattoos have been around for millennia. People got them at least five thousand years ago. Today theyre common everywhere from Maori communities in New Zealand to office parks in Ohio. But in the ancient Middle East, the writers of the Hebrew Bible forbade tattooing. Per Leviticus 19:28, You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yourselves.

Historically, scholars have often understood this as a warning against pagan practices of mourning. But language scholar John Huehnergard and ancient-Israel expert Harold Liebowitz argue that tattooing was understood differently in ancient times.

Huehnergard and Liebowitz note that the appearance of the ban on incisionsor tattooscomes right after words clearly related to mourning, perhaps confirming the original theory. And yet, looking at whats known about death rituals in ancient Mesopotamia, Syria, Israel, and Egypt, they find no references to marking the skin as a sign of mourning. They also note that there are other examples in Leviticus and Exodus where two halves of a verse address different issues. So that could be the case here, too.

What tattoos were apparently often used for in ancient Mesopotamia was marking enslaved people . Egyptian captives were branded with the name of a god, marking them as belongings of the priests or pharaoh. But devotees might also be branded with the name of the god they worshiped.

    The Holy Word On Tattoos

Long story short, the Bible does not specifically mention tattoos, still, that doesnt mean certain verses are not associated with the practice of tattooing.

Among the most popular verses are Leviticus 19:28 and 1 Corinthians 3:17. Thessalonians 5:22 also makes an appearance in some arguments. Holy officials, such as Pope Francis, do not shame the art of tattoos, but rather see them as a window into someone elses life values.

Tattoos can become a problem in religion if they expressly represent satanic and unholy symbols, or are only gotten out of a perverted sense of pride. If someone is only getting tattoos because they seek an unnatural amount of attention, then this is viewed negatively by any church.

If youre worried about violating your faith by getting a tattoo, the best place to start is at your church. Consulting high-ranking church officials such as the pastor or priest will help push you in a direction to start your own research. If you believe in praying, then this can help as well.

    Leviticus On Having A Tattoo

First of all, Leviticus 19.26-28 is said by some to forbid tattoos. Others quickly dismiss this because its in Leviticus. But none of Gods words in the Bible should be dismissed. In the same chapter we also read that you should love your neighbour as yourself a verse that Jesus quoted. Would we also dismiss that because its in Leviticus? Read all three verses closely. The prohibition against tattoos is in reference to necromancy. Apparently back in Canaan that was a thing. Baal a local divinity who supposedly died and rose again liked it when his followers got inked for his glory. So if youre getting a tattoo to connect you with a false god or with the dead dont.

It Can Be A Stumbling Block To Others

But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. 1 Corinthians 8:9 NKJV We have the liberty to do as we wish depending on our personal conviction on whether it Is right or wrong.

But you should consider that it might be a stumbling block to those with weak faith. Some Christians believe that tattoos make them more approachable to an unbeliever and that they might relate with them better and win their souls for God.

However, tattoos can be a stumbling block for some Christians. For example, it might be difficult for some people to listen to a message from a pastor with a tattoo sleeve. The pastor might be preaching a holy spirit inspired, and moving message, but they wont look past that tattoo.
