“Yes, I was a bad guy, and yes I did some bad things,” said 34-year-old patient David Loya who grew up in a loving family in the suburbs of Fontana.
Loya says at an early age, he chose the wrong friends and spent his adolescent years in and out of a juvenile detention center. At age 18, he got his first prison tattoo.
“I decided to tat my face up because I knew when I did that, there was no turning back,” Loya said.
At age 27, he was buried deep in the gang life, fighting attempted murder charges.
Loya says it was that moment while he was facing life in prison that he became determined to get out of the that lifestyle.
“My life kind of flashed before my eyes. My past, and especially my future. Because now I’m like, ‘wow, my parents that love me, I’m never going to see them again.'”
Two years later, Loya got out of prison. The gang life tried to suck him back in, but he checked himself into a Christian men’s home. He eventually got a job at a non-profit, but he says his clients wouldn’t give him a chance.
“It was difficult for them to receive me because of my tattoos,” Loya said.
The program is funded by several grants, so it’s free to the community. 40 patients have started the process so far.

Removed Free Of Charge
Heâs having them removed free of charge at Good & Bad Ink, a tattoo and removal shop owned by Della Steinke.
Steinke started removing tattoos for former gang members and guys who are trying to get out just over a year ago. The idea came to her while she was working at a halfway house after one of the men was attacked.
Steinke said she lasered off gang tattoos from the 22-year-oldâs hands and face . She still keeps in touch with him and said he is doing well.
âOne of the biggest problems they run into with having all these tattoos really hard to gain employment,â said Steinke. âAnd a lot of times they go to get an apartment, people take one look and they turn them down.â
All of the removals are done free of charge. Steinke covers the cost with the money she makes at the shop on tattoos, removals and some esthetic services.
Steinke is working with GAIN, Gang Action Interagency Network, to get the word out.
Robyn Dryden, who is the network co-ordinator, said GAIN is connected to a lot of support services to help people get out of gangs, but there is nothing like this.
âI think it paves the way forward for people to make really positive changes in their lives,â said Dryden.
She said thereâs no consitent statistics of how many people are involved in gangs in Manitoba, but right now there are 1,400-1,500 youths involved in 30 different gangs in Winnipeg.

When he was released from jail, he heard about a tattoo removal program at Loma Linda University Medical Center, started by trauma surgeon Dr. Sigrid Burruss.
“As you can imagine, having some of these visible tattoos can provide a significant challenge when it comes to applying for a job and getting employment,” Burruss said.
Dr. Burruss says laser tattoo removal can cost thousands of dollars but Loma Lindas program is free, thanks to grants and community partnerships. She also says it is helping patients change the course of their lives.
“It’s a very involved process. The patient really needs to be engaged, wanting this change in their life, because they do need to come back to see us five, six, seven, or eight times,” Dr. Burruss said.
It can take months to remove the tattoos.
But Loya says the results are life changing.
“I look into the mirror and I see the man who I want to become,” he said.
He now works for Cityway Community Economic Development Corporation, which helps lower income people get housing and jobs.
“I love it because I now help people transition from prison into successful reentry,” Loya said.
Starting over is something he is very familiar with as he erases the ink of his past.
“Full transformation starting from the inside. I don’t want this life. Now my outside is getting transformed as well. I’m super thankful,” he said.

It brings up bad memories for me, so Im trying to put the old me behind me and move forward, said inmate Adeline Garcia.
I grew up in gangs. Went to prison, transferred as an adult when I was 14. Stayed in prison until I was 36 and I was involved in gangs in prison, said inmate Roy Clark. I did 22 years out of a 25-year sentence. I went home, I was addicted to drugs and my drug habits is why I came back to jail.
Clark used to see that, his past, when he looked in the mirror. Small numbers by his eye and symbols on his hands represented his gang-affiliation.
Until a team of volunteers with Soul Survivor, Ink. started stopping by twice a month.
They are made from various things. Chess pieces that were burnt down, theres various things that they use to put ink in and sometimes its difficult to get that so-called ink out, said Soul Survivor, Ink founder Gina Jernukian.
